Questions & Answers

Cal J : What is the outer diameter of the Baader Planetarium 13mm Hyperion Modular Eyepiece, 20mm Eye Relief, Rubber Eye Guard, 1.25" eyepiece? Is the wall thickness of the lens tube thick enough to machine the outer diameter down some?STUART M : 43mm I believe. There are actually two sets of threads for the T adapters, 43 would be the smaller.EDWARD N : I would be very reluctant to machine any part of this eyepiece down to a smaller diameter. Not only would you likely be voiding the manufacturer's warranty, but you would also be running the risk of ruining the eyepiece.MICHAEL C : You can find a cutaway view of the Hyperion eyepiece at their site, but the wall thickness doesn't look very generous. They also show some examples of eyepiece projection setup, with T2 spacers and the eyepiece barrel extenders.KEN T : Hey, I was wondering the same things when I bought it, because I had thoughts about machining the diameter to 30mm. Is that what you were planning to do? What is your application? I have one that I can measure for you, but I don't think it would work for my purposes anyway. I can let you know the thickness. E-mail me at kjt at umich edu.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?steven j : I did a lot of research on eyepieces for my telescope, and the Baader Planetarium seemed to be the all around best choice for my usage...high quality image, combined with modular assembly at a reasonable price (i.e. -not more expensive than my telescope), made it a hands down winner for me...!! The modular threading choices made it possible for me to attach my GoPro Session just in time for next weeks solar eclipse...Thanks Again Adorama

Excellent add-on for the Hyperion Zoom eyepiece!

Excellent add-on for the Hyperion Zoom eyepiece. Under the right seeing conditions it makes Saturn?s rings much more visible, and we even saw color from the surface of Jupiter on first light. Very happy with the purchase and definitely recommend it!

Sharp, works well with the Hyperion Zoom eyepiece

Sharp, complements the Baader Hyperion Zoom eyepiece well. Comes with plenty of adapters to suit it to other eyepiece-scope configurations.

Awesome lens

It's bigger and heavier than I anticipated, but makes for excellent viewing.

Not as clear as expected.

Lens clarity was less than expected for price. Wide field of view was as described. It’s a rather heavy lens. I did not need a counter balance, but just a word of caution. Using with a 700mm/60mm telescope. Can see Jupiter and moons but not level of detail I’d like. I haven’t used it to see the moon yet. New moon or overcast.

Baader Hyperion eyepieces are provide great bang for the buck

I am an experienced amateur astronomer and I am currently converting my primary eyepiece set over to Baader Hyperions. These eyepieces provide a clear, wide field of view that rivals more expensive brands such as Televue. The only feature I don't like it the eyepiece guard which is separate rubber ring and is not incorporated into eyepiece casing.

Baader Hyperion eyepieces are provide great bang for the buck

By James F.

I am an experienced amateur astronomer and I am currently converting my primary eyepiece set over to Baader Hyperions. Nice eyepiece!

Great contrast and clarity, good color. Nice wide view with good sharpness almost to the edge.

Bring your stargazing experience to a new level with the Baader Planetarium 13mm Hyperion 68-degree Modular Eyepiece. This high-performance eyepiece offers unparalleled photo-visual features, making it a top choice for amateur astronomers who demand high-end performance without the high-end price tag.

Unlike other eyepieces that are simply rebranded versions of similar models, the Hyperion has been meticulously redesigned from the ground up. It boasts superior transmission, enhanced contrast, and innovative new features, all thanks to the tireless efforts of the Baader Planetarium team.

The Hyperion eyepiece is equipped with the world's finest optical coatings and exceptional mechanics, ensuring a viewing experience that is nothing short of spectacular. As a visual eyepiece, it delivers remarkable sharpness and color fidelity across its 68-degree wide, flat-field view, even when used with fast telescopes.

When compared to the Pentax XL eyepieces, the Hyperion stands its ground, matching the Pentax in every aspect. From its superb on-axis and off-axis sharpness to its pitch-black high contrast field, the Hyperion truly delivers.

One of the standout features of the Hyperion eyepiece is its comfortable and relaxing viewing experience. With a forgiving eye-position, 20mm of eye-relief, an extra-large eye lens, and an optical design that eliminates the annoyance of 'kidney-beaning' and blackouts, the Hyperion ensures that your stargazing sessions are as enjoyable as they are enlightening.

In conclusion, the Baader Planetarium 13mm Hyperion 68-degree Modular Eyepiece is more than just an accessory for your telescope. It's a gateway to the cosmos, offering a viewing experience that is as vast and awe-inspiring as the universe itself.

Baader Planetarium Hyperion Features

  • Consisting of 8 elements in 5 groups (3.5 mm - 21 mm), the Hyperion optical design delivers outstanding sharpness and color correction over a 68-degree wide apparent field (65 degrees for the 21 mm)
  • The Hyperion optical design has been chosen to deliver a exceptionally comfortable view, thanks to its 20 mm of eye-relief, large eye lens, and a pupil-free of the kidney-beaning and blackouts common in many wide field eyepieces
  • The new 24 mm uses a different optical design and delivers outstanding performance over its 68deg. wide apparent field. It is totally free of blackouts & other annoying exit pupil behaviors, delivers long eye relief (17 mm), virtually zero distortion, and is sharp to the edge even in fast telescopes
  • Its flat focal plane is particularly suited to very fast newtonians that use coma correctors. The 29 mm field stop makes the 24 mm Hyperion the widest 24 mm eyepiece. The 24 mm Hyperion is also the smallest and lightest of the Hyperion
  • High grade water-white glasses are used throughout to deliver a crystal clear view with low scatter and excellent color fidelity, free of the yellow or bluish coloration imparted by many other eyepieces. Use of high-index glasses delivers low distortion & astigmatism, even on scopes as fast as f/4
  • Baader Planetarium has gone to great lengths to give the Hyperion the most advanced multi-coatings ever used on amateur telescope eyepieces
  • The Hyperion Phantom Group multi-coatings and coating equipment are proprietary to Baader and have been designed by German coating engineers specifically for the Baader Hyperion and optimized for each of the glasses used
  • These coatings are applied with the latest thin-film German coating equipment, training, and process controls. Users report that the Hyperion clearly shows fainter stars and darker sky than the competitive clones
  • The proprietary Hyperion housings have been engineered by Baader to incorporate careful opto-mechanical design and execution of internal baffling to eliminate stray light and ghost reflections
  • Uncapping the eye lens reveals a pitch black interior, with no distracting and contrast-robbing glints of light from unbaffled lens or metal surfaces
  • Superb fit and finish - eyepiece barrels are accurate to size, nicely machined, and hard anodized
  • Works in both 1.25" and 2" focusers. The 1.25" barrel is threaded for filters and kept short (0.94") to work well in binoviewers and spotting scopes. Baader's new housing incorporates a full-length 2" barrel (0.94" long) and provides a specially designed tapered locking recess
  • In addition, the Hyperion field stop locations have been re-designed and optimized to give the shortest focus position possible
  • Soft folding rubber eyecups work for both normal and eyeglass users. Each Hyperion comes with protective lens caps and leatherette storage pouch
  • All Hyperion accept popular Astigmatism Correcting Lenses. The Hyperion eyelens housing is compatible with the full range of correcting lenses from 0.25 to 3.5 diopters
  • Observers with any astigmatism will really appreciate this feature, no longer needing to wear eyeglasses to see stars as true pinpoints
  • The long 20 mm eye relief of the Hyperion works particularly well with these corrector lenses, without forcing the observer to press their eye close to the lens in order to see the entire wide field
  • Removable Negative Lens Element permits variable focal lengths using Baader's new 14 mm and 28 mm Finetuning Rings (sold separately)
  • The optical design of the Hyperion enables them to work as an extremely sharp wide-field projection eyepiece for even large chip CCD and DSLRs
  • The eyelens barrel has been provided with two different external threads, M43 and M54 (these are covered by the removable rubber eyecups)
  • A wide variety of adapter rings enables cameras to be directly and rigidly close-coupled for afocal projection photography, or variably extended for classical eyepiece projection imaging with T-Adapters and Extension Tubes
  • The front negative lens element is designed to be removed (and exposes an M48 2" filter thread). This converts each Hyperion into a longer focal length high-quality projection eyepiece, giving the imager two choices of focal length with each eyepiece
