Questions & Answers

DALE L : What filter thread size? For those who are curious... the lens cap is a screw in which uses a 37mm thread. I like using a polarizer on this to simulate what my camera will use. Too bad the specs do not list this.
Shopper : Question about the range on the body of this viewfinder. In those picture. there is only 2/3, 1/2, 1/3. Does it have 16, s35 or An on it body? Thank you!ANDREW M : Happy to help. This viewfinder has the following markings for Film Gates/Sensor Sizes: 2/3", 1/2", 1/3", S16 (Super 16), 35, AN (Anamorphic). The ring around the lens element also twists to add a letterbox for the following aspect ratios: TV (4:3), 35, 16, 1.66 (European Widescreen), 16:9 (HD a.k.a. Widescreen Television), 1.85 (American Widescreen), 2.35 (Anamorphic Projection), 2.55 (Cinemascope). It's a sweet little mini viewfinder for the price. It does not, however, give you a good idea of Depth of Field since there is no way to adjust f-stop/t-stop as I'm sure you're already aware of. If you have $700 lying around, I recommend getting the Alan Gordon Enterprises Mark Vb Director's Viewfinder. It's big, bulky and has some weight to it, but it gives you a much better view of framing. If you want to be a little more modern, there's a cool iPhone/Android App called "Artemis." It has settings for pretty much any frame size and aspect ratio, and you can compensate for crop factor with the selection of different cameras and lenses. To top it off it's only $30.DOMINICK D : Yes it does: S16 with range 10-114 35 with range 18-200 AN with range 35-400ARTHUR B : It does not. Now that i have this - thinking i could start with one this inexpensive - I was mistaken. It has not become part of my kit the way i was hoping.
Shopper : Is this director viewfinder works with Super 16mm and 35mm camera?ANDREW R : Yes, this unit works with S16 and 35mm formats.

Not bad

The size is nice. The product feels strong but the instructions are not intuitive. I?m still not sure how to properly lock or unlock the viewfinder.

Filter size: 37mm !

I own and use a Pentax 645z medium format DSLR. This camera is large and heavy. Not ideal as a walk around camera but the results it produces are outstanding, especially in terms of the latitude range for editing. Instead of carrying this camera around all the time, I leave this Alan Gordon Mini Viewfinder in my vehicle. I go for walks with this on my neck and scope out shots I want to come back for and even take a 'preliminary' shot with my cell phone. I wanted to use the same filter on this that I usually use on camera (Singh-ray Gold N Blue Polarizer) but didn't know what the thread size was as the manufacturer has disclosed this. Answer 37mm, which luckily is the same size often used for the clip on cell phone filter attachments. And knowing the filter size allowed me to replace the inconvenient screw on lens cap with a nice pinch style on/off one.

Alan Gordon Pocket Mini Directors Viewfinder

Gets the work done. For the price its a fairly useful instrument. You'll need to buy a case to better protect the viewfinder if you plan on traveling with it.

Great Tool

There is no replacement for the Mark Vb but this little viewfinder does an excellent job giving you an idea of what's in frame. It's small so you don't get a good look at any detail, but it does help you frame a shot and get a general idea how wide the angle of view will be. I'd recommend this for amateurs, students, and people who have little or no experience with lenses or professional cameras.
