Atomos and Z cam have just joined forces to bring the latest technology to two of their user-favorite products. The free firmware update, which will be available in early summer 2020. It will allow for Apple ProRes RAW recording over HDMI. The process will start from the Z Cam E2 cinema camera to the Atomos Ninja V monitor-recorder.

The new updates gives the Ninja V the option to record ProRes RAW up to 4Kp60. That gives powerful image capture to E2 shooters. As an added bonus, the companies are coming together to bring a touchscreen camera control option to the monitor. That means filmmakers will have the ability to work and adjust necessary settings with a simple touch.

Statements from Atomos

“We are proud to welcome Z CAM into the rapidly growing ProRes RAW ecosystem.” That’s what Atomos CEO Jeromy Young said in a company announcement. “The E2 is a highly affordable fully featured cinema camera. It will have a small form factor that lends itself to many different applications. The Ninja V is already a popular choice with E2 owners. Now, with these new features, the E2 and Ninja V together become a tightly integrated camera package. It will offer unrivalled recording and monitoring options at an affordable price.”

ProRes RAW over HDMI

The addition of ProRes RAW over HDMI into the Atomos and Z Cam system allows for more accessible RAW shooting. There will be on-screen adjustments and controls that will bring greater flexibility while shooting. And the either RAW HQ or RAW formats retain all image information and data. Final Cut Pro X, among other apps, easily edits ProRes RAW files, and all files stay manageable. Of course, that means transfer and loading times are significantly decreased.

“I’m delighted to be working with Atomos on this,” adds Kinson Loo, CEO of Z CAM. “Together we share a common goal of democratizing filmmaking and giving the best most affordable solutions to customers. There will be an addition of ProRes RAW over HDMI recording. From the Z CAM E2 to the Ninja V, this makes shooting RAW much more practical. Plus, ProRes RAW is enabled. Surely, more professional filmmakers will adopt our cameras in a variety of productions. Seeing is believing!”

Stay tuned for more information about the free update coming in early summer 2020.
