Up until this month, audiences enjoyed the premieres of a handful of new series. Shows like the Paul Rust dramedy “Love,” the Will Arnett starring “Flaked” and the return of the 80s sitcom family featured in “Fuller House” were met with good-to-mixed reviews. We also eagerly anticipated the new seasons of “Daredevil” and the Kevin Spacey political thriller “House of Cards.” And for some, the return of either show was well worth the wait. So now that you’ve binged watched all 13 episodes of the masked vigilante’s latest adventures, what else is there to look forward to in April?
The Ranch (series)
“The Ranch” is a new, multi camera sitcom produced by and starring Ashton Kutcher. Fellow “That 70s Show” star Danny Masterson also appears in a series about brothers working on a ranch in Colorado. Intriguingly, it co-stars long lost and seemingly found again Deborah Winger. Although the buzz on this has been so-so thus far, it did debut during the first weekend of this month. So give it a shot as the entire first season is already available.
Team Foxcatcher (feature length documentary)
“Team Foxcatcher” is a documentary take on the same subject tackled in Bennett Miller’s Oscar nominated “Foxcatcher.” The true crime story focusing on Olympic wrestling brothers David and Mark Schultz and the duplicitous millionaire John du Pont will have its world premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. You’ll be able to catch this on Netflix later this month. Thanks to “Making of a Murderer,” the true crime documentary format is really hot right now so “Team Foxcatcher” should satiate those viewers who wanted more from the popular reality series.
Special Correspondents (feature length film)
UK comedian Ricky Gervais already has a lot of great content currently available on Netflix (have you seen “An Idiot Abroad?” Do so ASAP. It’s hilarious). Gervais and Eric Bana play two fraudulent news radio correspondents and are confronted with a situation forcing them to make good on their trumped up reputation. The talented cast includes “Boardwalk Empire’s” Kelly Macdonald and “The Conjuring’s” Vera Farmiga.
Lost & Found Music Studios (series)
Netflix attempts to capture the tween market in this scripted series about teenagers developing their talent in a music studio. Presented in a “mockumentary” format, “Lost & Found Music Studios” hopes to build a young audience around its cinéma vérité-like approach.
Returning: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (season 2)
“Kimmy Schmidt” was the surprise breakout comedy of last year. Created by Tina Fey of “30 Rock” fame, the series furthers the misadventures of the irrepressible character brilliantly portrayed by Ellie Kemper. Titus Burgess, Jane Krakowski and Carol Kane are all set to return. Alas no word yet on whether Jon Hamm will reappear. He was freakin’ brilliant as the cult leader who held Kimmy hostage in an underground bunker. This set off a major plot point launching our heroine’s trajectory throughout “Unbreakable’s” first season.
