With the CES 2023 Show in the midst, it’s no surprise that many large camera brands are coming out with some impressive releases this week. This has only been heightened for Nikon camera users as the company recently announced the development of two new lenses for full-frame (FX-format) Nikon Z series mirrorless cameras. The new NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S Lens and the NIKKOR Z 26mm f/2.8 Lens provide Nikon users more options to enhance their creative toolkit. Let’s take a look at what we know so far about each lens.

Key Features of the Nikon 85mm f/1.2 Lens
- S-Line NIKKOR Z lens series
- F-stop of 1.2
- Filter size is the same as the NIKKOR 50mm 1.2 Lens
While information about this announcement is currently scarce, there are some important factors that we do know. The 85mm option will be an ultrafast mid-telephoto prime lens. Aside from the confirmed focal length and maximum aperture, it’s also suspected to have an 82mm front filter (based on the product image). This would be the same as the NIKKOR 50mm 1.2 lens released in 2020.
Nikon also claims you can expect “large, beautiful bokeh” from the lens. This would make it especially desirable to portrait photographers — specifically in wedding or fashion photography — given its 1.2 f-stop. As with many Nikon Lenses, you can expect it to work exceptionally in low-lit situations. The lens also appears to have an Auto and Manual option for autofocus, a custom control ring and focus ring (again, based on the product image).

Key Features of the Nikon 26mm f/2.8 Lens
- S-Line NIKKOR Z lens series
- F-stop of 2.8
- Slightly smaller than the NIKKOR 28mm f2.8 lens
Amateur to advanced photographers will be especially surprised by this lens’ size. With it being a slightly smaller version of the NIKKOR 28mm f2.8 lens, you can expect the lens to be extremely lightweight and compact. While we don’t have exact measurements or weight just yet, the 28mm’s 52mm filter size and weight of 5.5 oz. provides some clues that this new 26mm will be just as portable. This ultra wide-angle lens is likely to prove itself as a worthy option for Nikon wedding and event photographers who work in low-light conditions often. Its compact size will also work nicely for travel and street photographers.
This is fresh news from Nikon and, therefore, we don’t have many details about this release just yet. The lenses are in development, but Nikon has not yet released a preorder date. If you’re a Nikon user, be sure to check Adorama’s new releases page for all the latest news.
