Whether you’re shooting landscapes, portraits, weddings, events, or even street photography, a mid-range zoom lens is a must-have piece of equipment, and Nikon has just added this highly-anticipated lens to their full-frame mirrorless Z-mount system. The new NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens is packed with optical functions, including Nikon’s new Multi-Focus System, natural bokeh, and all of the benefits the S-Line carries.

“The NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S is the lens that Z Series users have been waiting for, a lens that many photographers and videographers would never leave home without,” Jay Vannatter, Executive Vice President, Nikon Inc., said in a company release. “Lightweight and tack sharp, the 24-70mm f/2.8 S is a great example of the outstanding performance and portability that is possible with our next-generation Z Mount System.”

Key features:

  • 24-70mm focal length
  • f/2.8-22 aperture
  • 82mm filter size
  • 17 elements in 15 groups
  • 9 diaphragm blades
  • 4.8 oz. (805 g)
  • Nikon Z lens mount
  • New ARNEO coating
  • Multi-Focus System and Stepping Motor
  • Built-in Function button (L-Fn)
  • 5 stops of image stabilization
  • Dust- and drip-resistant

The 24-70mm f/2.8 S, which works directly with the Nikon Z mount, is lighter and shorter than the user-favorite AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR lens (by nearly 24.7 percent, and 18.4 percent, respectively).

The lens is the first in the NIKKOR lineup to feature the brand new ARNEO coat from Nikon, which is paired with the brand’s Nano Crystal Coat to cut down on flare and ghosting. The built-in Multi-Focus System takes high-resolution photos to the next level by keeping your auto-focus sharp, especially when you’re shooting close-up subjects. The two focus groups, which move in unison, are all part of the stepping motor (STM), and help the lens powerfully focus, no matter the subject. Aberrations across the full zoom range see a serious reduction, and autofocusing gets even more accurate.

An added built-in Function button (L-Fn), as well as a manual focus ring and Organic EL Lens Information Panel, have been added to give you more control and customizable options when it comes to real-time shooting.

A total of 17 elements in 15 groups, including two ED elements and four aspherical elements, deliver sharp and edge-to-edge performance, and users can expect to see smooth control of ghosting, flare, and aberration.

When it comes to video, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens pairs with the new Z 6 and Z 7 cameras (and is compatible with the cameras’ built-in 5-axis VR) to record smooth video. All of the above functions transfer onto video, which has minimal focus breathing, fast and accurate focusing (thanks to the Multi-Focus System), and customizable commands using the control ring and panels.
