In keeping with a trend in the industry towards paring down the number of new compact cameras introduced at any one time, Nikon today unveiled four new models that include a world’s first for digital cameras, and a first for Nikon. The world’s first innovation is a built-in projector, found in the new Coolpix S1000pj (above), which projects images and videos as a slide show up to 40 inches via a lens built into the front of the camera. The projector throws a modest 10 lumens of light, so viewing should be in a dark room, and the camera will run for 1 hour in projector mode. The first for Nikon is the S70’s 3.5-inch, 288K dot touch screen control that gives that camera button-free operation. Nikon claims it will be viewable in direct sunlight.

All four cameras are built around a 12MP sensor, which seems to be the resolution limit for compact digital cameras (at least for now). They also share the new Nikon Smart Portrait System, which does some fancy image processing in-camera to produce smoother skin and even skin tones. In addition to a touch screen, the S70 ($399.95) offers 720p HD video, has a 5x wide-angle zoom, imge stabilization, subject tracking, and auto scene selector. It will be available in September for $399.95 in several stylish color combos. The S1000pj ($429.95), in addition to the proejctor, has a 2.7-inch monitor but otherwise shares the same features as the S70. .Rounding out the series is the Coolpix S640 ($249.95), which Nikon claims has fast autofocus and start-up time and “short shutter release lag,” although their announcement did not say how short. The S640 will Finally there’s the budget-priced S570 ($199.95), which offers mostly the same features as the other three cameras, but presumably not the same level of performance. All four cameras will be available in September.
Adorama is currently accepting pre-orders for the Coolpix S100pj, S70 and S640 will not charge credit cards until the camera ships. Orders will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
