“Where did I put my keys?!” shall never be heard again. Neither will “which bag is my 17-40mm zoom in?” or “what did I do with my 64GB SD card?”, thanks to GearEye, a smart gear (and “personal stuff”) management system that keeps track of your valuables using digital stickers that you put on your most prized items, and a smartphone app that works with an external dongle to help you locate them.
In other words, the Internet of Everything just upped its game.
While GearEye is designed for on-the-go professionals, it also seems to help you find commonly-losable household items such as wallets and keys.
Here’s how it works: Put the peel-and-paste RFID tags and stickers (15 stickers of various sizes are supplied in a starter kit) on items you want to keep track of, scan and register them on the GearEye app on your mobile device (hint: don’t lose the mobile device!).
Just place the GearEye Dongle in your bag. The best place for it is close to the edge of the bag, like a side-pocket, or, our personal favorite, hooked onto the bag’s zipper. Hit ‘Quick GearCheck’ on the app — GearEye says it’s all there! You’re good to go.
If the GearEye app tells you something’s missing, take the dongle out and put it on the back of your phone. Hold them together and scan again while hovering with your phone above the bag. This lets GearEye use your phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope to understand where it is relative to your bag and scan with even higher precision. A readout on your phone tells you if you’re getting closer to or farther away from the item you’re looking for.
For those who live cluttered, disorganized lives, this could save hours a week.
The GearEye Starter Kit is available from Adorama in white, red, black, blue, and yellow for ; a Pro Kit with 30 stickers costs , and is also available in multiple colors.
