This is the easiest way to upgrade an old HDD mac which has Thunderbolt. The Akitio is tbolt 1 (10G/sec) so a SATA 3 SSD will not saturate the bus, at least in theory. It has 2 eSATA ports so another SSD or big HDD is easily added. A Thunderbolt 2 or 3 version would be fantastic.

The AKiTiO Thunder SATA Go features an all-aluminum, unibody design. It allows users to connect their SATA storage and RAID devices, but does so in an extremely portable, bus powered solution. The Thunder SATA Go can also be used to connect an SSD directly to a laptop computer so that content editing can be done in the field with transfer speeds of up to 530MB/s.
Thunderbolt for lighting fast transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps
SATA cable with USB power to connect SSD by bus power
Tethered Thunderbolt cable and cable holder
Two eSATA host ports (up to 6 Gb/s)
Durable, compact and portable
Bus powered
High-Speed I/O Performance
With the extremely fast throughput performance of the Thunderbolt connection and the 6Gb/s eSATA interface, solid state drives (SSD's) can run at full SATA-III speeds. A single SSD can reach speeds of up to 530MB/s and if two SSD's are combined in a RAID array, transfer rates can go even higher.
Portable and Bus Powered
This sleek and compact Thunderbolt to SATA mini dock runs on bus power alone without the need for external power. Hassle-free with its tethered Thunderbolt cable and noiseless, this Thunderbolt to eSATA adapter is the ideal companion for your notebook.
SSD Reader
The included SATA cable with USB power provides filmmakers with the ability to connect any SSD, straight from their camera, regardless of brand or capacity, directly to their laptop without it needing to be plugged into a power outlet. When you're on a deadline, every second counts. Raw data on an SSD can be passed along to a DIT for editing and the filmmaker can insert a new SSD into the camera and continue filming at the same time that editing is taking place.
