I've had my unit for years and the battery finally gave out. By chance I used an outlet tester on it and was surprised to find that one of the backed up outlets showed "open neutral". I opened it up and saw the problem. The metal bar inside that has clamps that grip the plug didn't have the clamps for this outlet. The defect is circled in blue in the photo, it should look like the one circled in red. The unit has worked for me for years, just never used this particular outlet on it I guess. So it gets some points for that. But take away some points for how this ever got out of their factory with this defect.

We've been using APC Power Back-UPS since we got our first computers in 1997. We use them to back-up our computers, DVRs and TVs. We currently have 4 APC Backup Units. They are very very well made, reliable and are outstanding products. One of the benefits of having them, in addition to having continuous power when there is a short power failure, is that they have replaceable batteries. The unit I finally had to replace was approximately 20 years old.

Keeps the electronics safe from power fluctuations. Been using APC products for 30 years and they never dissapoint. Used trade UPS program to replace the 8 year old unit with a new one for a bit more than the battery would have cost and the old one ships back for proper disposal!

I have a number of these small UPS systems to protect my computers from brief power outages. They will supply power for a few minutes until the computer has time to shut itself down. The battery usually goes about 3 years before needing replacement. Battery is about $25 to replace.

Hard to review: I bought the UPS battery backup and, other than an initial test after charging the battery, I haven't needed to use it. But it worked OK, and came highly recommended.

Ordered on the company website after a search and it came quickly. Was an upgrade perk from an old unit when I planned to order a new battery. For twice the price of a battery, I purchased this. It's got more backup outlets and filtered outlets (4 instead of 3). Nice and compact. I've already got every outlet used. Has already saved me once. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

The APC UPS 550VA did what it was supposed to do during our recent power outage. It seamlessly switched over to battery power when AC power went out. I had plenty of time to wrap up my work and shut down the computer safely. However, the audible reminder tone was frequent and absolutely annoying after a few minutes. I had to turn it off to save my sanity. Later when our cell phones needed a charging, I had to move the UPS to the garage to charge the phones. This was extremely inconvenient and made me wish I had purchased the 600VA which has an audible mute.

This is a fine unit that does what it is supposed to. I am giving it 2 stars to get someone's attention in the industrial design department of the company that makes it. I had an older unit essentially the same as this 550 UPS. It had large white markings on the (black) unit indicating the different outlets, the meaning of the warning LEDs, and (in the back) the in/out jacks to protect phone/ethernet lines. The new unit has these markings in a fairly small size in gray(!) on black. These are only legible in bright light or with a flashlight, which makes very little sense for a unit that is typically stored under or behind a desk. I have attached photos of the old and new unit to illustrate my point. Someone should probably read Donald Norman's "The Design of Everyday Things."
