Is a great Recorder, if you need 4k 60p, or 240fps at 1080p, if you need that this is the recorder. for the price is great. plus mic pre-amp included. BUT .... if you are a DP on the set or a director on the set, don't expect something like Small HD or Tv Logic, or ONE click Tools like the Video Device PIX line with advance false color or custom mask guide, or crazy fast zoom just taping the screen, super easy to work, or multiples SDI inputs from 2 cameras. so you can compare different angles and exposure. please easy on off LUT, and pre LUT or post LUT option reading for the waveform. I think if they redesign the UI and the Tools, this could be one of the best recorder/field monitors in the market ( please ATOMOS full IRE scale in the waveform we need accurate information, and values in the false color scale, one click Peaking filter on off, Zoom just taping the screen like so many monitors or even the iPhone, please make it easy, simple please. I really think if they take the UI to the next level, this could be one of the best recorder / Monitor Cristian T.

Overall it's excellent. It really is. However it's VERY heavy, and as a result I wouldn't recommend trying to support it with a friction arm while powering it using the batteries on the back. The battery life is pretty poor too, but can be helped by turning the brightness down, because wow is this thing bright! The screen gets quite hot, it won't burn you, but it can be somewhat unpleasant. That said if it's cold out, you can use it has a handy finger warmer. The inputs are all rock solid and don't wiggle around at all. Of course that contributes to the weight, but it's worth it. I wouldn't recommend mounting it to a hot shoe (a cold shoe should be fine.) I own both the 5" and 7" BMD video assist but got tired of purchasing expensive SD cards for 4k or long recording time. This Shogun Inferno has a monitor that is 300% better that BMD, PLUS the tools you need for exposure, color and focus PLUS affordable large capacity recording. I use this mostly with my Panasonic AG-DVX200 or my master record from my switcher and has run flawlessly. I with I would have purchased it sooner.

While toying with the idea of owning a external monitor which I personally like to use to shoot with there were a few factors I took into mind. Having previously owned a SmallHD DP6 which was fantastic monitor, I hated that it wasn't bright enough. Now granted the new 702 Bright is pretty awesome but for the money I chose the Shogun Inferno not only because I can use it as a backup recorder (there are many different options) but as just a stand alone monitor it displays beautifully at 1500nits! That is a bit brighter than the SmallHD and I have record functionality. To me this seemed like the right call. I also purchased a 1TB SSD for extra space. I can't day that I have 1 bad thing about this, especially the value at the current price. Totally worth it.

I waited to make the purchase until reading reviews and waiting for the rest of the features to be implemented that weren't ready at time of release. My main objective was to breath new life into my FS700R by the addition of 4K. I also wanted the Inferno for a better field monitor for other cameras and Jib use. When the price changed while still in my cart Adorama took care of me and has always been a great place to buy. My first tests revealed a nice bright screen but the unit would shut down when recording 4K when running on battery power and fail to start back until I removed the batteries and replaced them. I was using genuine Sony NP-F970 batteries. It did not have this problem when on AC power. I updated the firmware from 8.0 to 8.31 and now it works great! Yes. It's heavy with big batteries but they all are so I just deal with it. Not only does it do nice 240fps in beautiful HD it can also do 120fps (4 sec burst) in 4K! And another surprise is continuous 240fps in 2K. Though my main objective was unleashing 4K 60P from my FS700R, I plan on using it with other cameras via HDMI since it is a better monitor than the built-in ones. The controls are familiar Atomos which I was already used to, already owning 2 Ninja Blades. The screen is bright enough for outdoor use as I read. The battery life isn't great but it's better than I expected. The fan is audible but hasn't been a problem. Whatever kinks it had seem to be worked out now and hopefully will be a reliable tool for years to come. The 3 year warranty helped me feel better about it. It also can record CDNG which are MASSIVE in size and I'll never use. It would be great if they made an option to record to a lighter duty compressed CODEC such as mp4 or h.264 for times when I don't need the heavy data rates and big file size of ProRes and DNxHR. Also if they would implement the 4K to HD ProRes downcovert feature that makes stunning supersampled HD from 4K that the Odyssey 7Q+ has then it would really rival the great Convergent Design's product. I'm still learning how to adapt my workflow with this. I learned that Premiere CS6 will not import the DNxHR files ,but it will the DNxHD and HD ProRes and 4K ProRes. It's worth noting that with Sony cameras that have software lens correction built-in to correct for lens distortions etc when recording the RAW output to the Inferno in 4K, the in-camera software correction is bypassed. That means your Inferno footage won't be corrected. So in the case with the FS700R and some lenses I use, the HD clip recorded in camera doesn't look the same as the uncorrected clip recorded in the Inferno. Objects may have slightly different proportions, straight lines may curve etc. So this seems to make 2 cameras with 2 different lenses match exactly. Not only that, but the color profiles don't transfer to the Inferno either, so the color is different between in-camera recordings and those in the Inferno. There looks to be ways to bake in color with the Inferno but I havent' had time to learn that yet. In summary it has lived up to be all that I had anticipated when it was first announced plus a little more.

So far so good. Nice bright display and easy to use interface. Using this with the Sony FS-7 and now that it handles the 12bit raw it's a true contender to the odyssey q7+

AtomHDR image processing lets you shoot with the high brightness range of your camera’s Log profile while maintaining vibrant true-to-life colors. Conventional monitors lack this capability, displaying the brightness detail of Log but with a washed out image that makes judging exposure difficult. Be at the forefront of the HDR revolution by having a field monitor capable of resolving HDR in the field as you see it in Post Production and record the original Log image direct from the sensor for HDR grading in post production.

The 10-bit panel resolves more colors (1.07 billion colors compared to 16.7 million for standard 8-bit panels) to ensure smooth color transitions in both HDR and SDR (standard dynamic range) shooting. The 1500nit panel brings HDR to life, accentuating high contrast scenes. While for regular SDR scenes, use the brightness slider to take advantage of the 1500nit screen for hood-free outdoor monitoring.

The AtomHDR engine not only lets you set perfect exposure in the field, you can take a HDR output in either PQ or HLG* standard to compatible HDR screens or accept HDR input from your NLE for mobile grading or for HDR connection from cameras with a PQ or HLG* output

Shogun Inferno combines high resolution recording, high frame rate recording and playback. Record Video from both HDMI and SDI cameras direct from the sensor to 4:2:2 10-bit ProRes or DNxHR up to an amazing 4K 60p or HD 240p*. Record Raw over SDI up to 4K 30p either directly to CDNG or record to ProRes or DNxHR.

The QuadLink SDI connections offer the widest camera compatibility with 1.5G/3G/6G/12G SDI inputs and a single 12G SDI output. Recording RAW* from Arri, Sony, Canon and Panasonic cameras provides 4K functionality not available in some cameras whilst also offers a far more affordable solution in terms of media costs.

Our flexible OS is packed with an extensive suite of scopes, all 1-touch away and simple to use. The Video OS includes tools for focus, framing & exposure (Focus peaking, 2:1/1:1 zoom, Zebra, False Color, Frame guides, SMPTE Safe Area, Waveform, RGB parade, vectorscope) along with a flexible 3D LUT implementation (use built-in LOG to Rec.709 Video or upload .cube files) and options for anamorphic de-squeeze monitoring.

Inferno features our patented continuous power system - a hot swappable dual battery system that automatically swaps to the second battery when power is low. To support the dual battery system we include a blazingly fast battery charger, two 4-cell batteries and a D-Tap to DC coiled cable to ensure continuous power in the field is all but assured.
The Shogun Inferno has multiple audio options replacing the need for a separate audio recorder. Monitor up to 8ch of embedded HDMI audio, up to 12ch of SDI audio or use the included XLR breakout cable to connect with external microphones for balanced analogue audio with 48V phantom power.

Outside of RAW and high frame rate 4:2:2 Apple ProRes / AVID DNxHR recording, the Shogun Inferno adds recording functionality not found in other recorders. Trigger start/stop recording over HDMI or SDI popular cameras, convert interlace to progressive signals on the fly with built-in 3:2 and 2:2 pulldown or use features like Pre-roll (continuous cache recording) and Time lapse to maximise your creativity.
Our built-in armor enhances protection & airflow whilst the raft of accessories (2 x NP series 4-cell batteries, fast battery charger, USB3 docking station, 2 x input XLR breakout cable, control cable, DC to D-Tap cable, 5 x Master Caddy cases, DC adapter & HDR sun hood) and the premium HPRC flight case ensures you're ready to hit the field immediately.
