Questions & Answers

Shopper : Hi, I have low volume from the built in speaker, is that normal?JULIUS W : I think this is normal, I never used the speakers, except to see if I got what I was recording, always run it into my computer to save the file. winkHANS V : Yes, the volume is quite low.TOM K : It is a small speaker with very little power driving it, to conserve batterie I use it infrequently to conferm recording. The majority of play back is usally after download to the lap top where I can edit.SIDNEY M : Turn up the speaker to themax of 35 with the + key. Make sure your recording level is adequate. The recording level bars should be reaching at least 50% when recording. Set the recording sensitivity with the slider on the right side (low - high - manual). For manual recording sensitivity, use the forward and reverse buttons on either side of the + button. The speaker is quite small so don't expect too much volume. Try headphones plugged into the left side or plug the DR-08 into your PC via USB (right side) and download the sound files to listen to on your PC.
Shopper : how to use this?STEVEN R : to make a recording and get it on your computer. 1. Ensure the micro-sd card is put in the recorder (it'll be on the right side of recorder under micro sd). 2. Put batteriers in recorder. They are located on the back side of the bottom half of the recorder. The recorder takes 2 AAA batteries. 3. There is a slider on the left side of the recorder slide the button toward the bottom of the recorder (O/I ) this will turn on the recorder. 4. Press the red recordering button (Rec) and speak into the microphone. 5. When you are done recording press the stop button. 6. Press play to hear the playback. If you need to transfer it to your computer you have 2 ways of doing it. a. plug-in the provided USB cable the larger end into your computer the smaller end into the usb slot located on the right side of your recorder (marked usb). Assuming your operating system supports removable storage, this will mount the recorder as storage. You can copy the files off of the recorder onto your computer. b. remove the micro sd card and use a micro sd reader connected to your computer to transfer the recordings to your computer. * Note that the Usb connection does not allow you to record directly from the recorder onto your computer. You will need to record it on the device and then transfer it to your computer.STEVEN R : The DR-08 is more like a digitail recorder than a field recorder. DR-08 does't have a USB audio device. when using the usb interface it opens the recorder like a remote drive so you move any recorded files off of the micro-sd cards..DUANE B : I'd start by asking what do you intend to use it for? Then I'd suggest that you read the manual that came with it. It is pretty self explanatory. If you don't know what you are planning to do with it, why buy it?ERIC B : Use it just like a tape recorder. Same basic functions.LEO G : Your answer is too general. Install the batteries provided in the unit and attempt to turn it on. If it turns on at least you have tackled your first step. Read the instruction book that came with it and try to figure out what you want to do with your unit. It is difficult to answer a question that is unspecific at this time such as your question. Other than that, the unit was delivered by Adorama on time, as promised. Generally, the unit is too plasticy, weak and not too durable for any heavy duty use, specially the microphones that swivels and sticks out which could be prone for premature damage. I would not recommend this unit for professional use or otherwise at any price range. Adorama's price on this unit is higher than the competing store (B&H) at the time of purchase, even at the discounted price, but not much. This purchase was mostly because of Rockwell's endorsement of the product and price, but found it to be inaccurate. I should have researched more thoroughly. Moral of the story: Caveat Emptor.JULIUS W : If you mean is it easy to use, yes, if you mean where do i use it, I use i in Church to record the choir, works great from any where I happen to be sitting. I use it at home to record as I practice my music.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?JON J : Good price and very compact.STEVEN R : I listened to the wrong person when making my buying decision.DUANE B : I have an older DR 05 and it is an awesome recorder. I set it on the dais next to me and record my sermons with it. Sometimes it even picks up comments from the front row people that are understandable.TOM K : For recording live gigs that can quickly be made to cd or upload mp3 without alot of process time good sound but not studio qualityLEO G : Rockwell website endorsement and price, but do your own research. Someone's endorsement may not be the best.

Too noisy

Is only usable with an external mic and preamp. It is possible to get good quality files out of it then, but it defeats the purpose of a small device. Otherwise there is an incredible amount of hiss.

Decent only if used with external preamp

DR-08 is extremely noisy if using the on-board mics or with a external mics having average output. However, if using with a good preamp and external mics and setting the DR-08 input to manual and adjusting to zero gain, then using the external preamp adjustments to get the correct recording level, the DR-08 files are actually very quiet and clean. But so much for the portability when doing all of that...

Tascam's compact DR-08 portable digital recorder packs serious audio quality into a handheld dynamo that fits in your pocket. It captures audiophile-quality 96kHz/24-bit WAV files - or web-friendly MP3 files - to robust MicroSD media. The built-in microphones have a unique mechanism to change the width and angle of the elements, allowing you to tailor the pattern for the perfect recording.

There's even a built-in kickstand for placing the recorder right where you want it. A pair of AAA batteries allows you to record for hours to the included 2GB card, then transfer the recording to your computer using high-speed USB 2.0.

Like TASCAM's other best-selling portable recorders, the DR-08 has features like auto level control and a low cut filter for clear recordings. Add your own microphone or line-level source using the 1/8" stereo input. The DR-08 has loop and variable speed on playback, allowing you to slow down speed without changing the pitch to learn new music. There's also noise canceling and EQ functions for improved playback timbre.

TASCAM's DR-08 is the most portable recorder yet. Whether you're a songwriter, live performer, business leader or sound designer, you won't want to step through your front door without the great-sounding Tascam DR-08.
