Questions & Answers

Steve B : Will it fit any tripod? I have an old Tiltall Star D.THEODORE W S : OK, I'm not a tripod expert, but I am of the belief that no quick release plate fits ALL tripods. I'm not familiar with the old Tiltall tripod, but I would think that the older the tripod the less chance that they would match up. I know this is not a definitive answer but I bought the tripod head and the quick release plates at the same time knowing they were made to fit each other.ED J : Hi Steve don't know anything about a tiltall star d. i use this plate with an an arca swiss head on gitzo studex legs. only use the big adapter plate (this one) for heavy, long, lenses when they are oriented with their optical axis along the groove on the top edge of the plate. for mounting a camera to the tripod head, typically the optical axis is normal to the groove, and i have a smaller adapter (from arca swiss ?? don't remember) made for the particular camera body, which grabs the bottom of the camera body. this universal adapter plate is not designed for (and does not do super well at) stabilizing camera wiggle about the plate axis normal to the groove. it will work for holding a camera, but you have to torque down the 1/4" bolt enough so that the friction between the plate and the camera bottom stabilizes the camera pitch angle (the plate already does a great job at stabilizing the roll angle and your tripod legs take care of the yaw angle.) =edCARL W : The plate works great. I had no problem. I have a Arca Swiss monoball Z1 and a Wimberley WH-200 version ll-- no problem--carlROBERT F : yes it willMATT P : Only if you have a arca swiss type ball head attached.
LYLE P : I own the canon 70-200 ii, 100 and 180 macro, 24-105, and am thinking of the Canon 200-400. What quick release mount do I need. I own the Arca Swiss mono ball. Can you recommend a sturdy tripod? I read that there is an extra long mount for the 200-400. ThanksCARL W : Most of my cameras are Nikon. I do have a film camera that's Cannon so I'm not sure which quick release you need, sorry. I use a Gitzo Gt3541 6x 4-section tripod., far and away my favorite. I also use a Slik 700DX pro. I have no problem with either one. If I have a heavy lens on I prefer the carbon legs. I have bought some mounts from Wimberley. Their WH-200 is really great. They carry long plates too. Their plates work with the mono ball, so far anyway. Hope this helps.--Carl PS. I'm saving for a 500mm $$$$$ED J : i also own the 70-200 f/4L (the f/2.8 is a good deal heavier. so the balance is different.) but with the 70-200, and with the 24-105, i mount the camera to the plate instead of mounting the lens to the plate. don't own the 400mm, but i have used it, and that's really a different weight and balance problem (the lens weighs 4-5x more than the camera. i own the big, universal, release plate but nearly never use it. it's meant to hold heavy lenses ... when i put it on the camera body, it was always uncomfortable to carry (the corners of the quick-release plate stuck out far enough to gouge you at every step) and i never could get it quite tight enough to keep the camera from slipping in portrait-orientation. So, most of the time, i want the tripod to hold the camera (this is, of course, different if the lens vastly outweighs the camera, because then you want to hold the lens.) almost always, the wimberley adapter plate stays on the bottom of my camera ... even when i'm not carrying the tripod. it doesn't scrape or bump when i walk with it and, when i am carrying the tripod, it just wants to fit into the arca swiss mono ball. and the thoughtfully machined capture dogs (which really do just fit the camera body) mean that i haven't missed a shot from a slipping camera for years (missed lots of shots for other reasons ...) i use an older gitzo studex tripod. kinda love-hate relationship, really. a nuisance to lug around. but man alive, she is steady.MARK M : I would opt for the excellent Kirk LP-55 for thew 200-400 Canon lens and the best carbon fiber Gitzo tripod you can afford!LEONARD C : That QR plate should work just fine. I use it for the Canon 70-200, the 300 and the 100 macro. I use a Gitzo series 3 carbon fibre tripod. Hope this is helpful.ALICE A N : I have a Canon 60D with the longest lens a zoom at 70-300. Look at the combined weight of your camera and the 200-400 lens to see what the head and the tripod are rated for. I use this plate with an Arca Swiss Monoball Z1 SP W/QS flip lock on Gitzo Ser 2 6X leveling 3 section tripod with G lock legs. Everything is very steady with full extension of the legs. The quick release plate makes it very easy to mount the camera or take it off the tripod. The tripod is as light as they come for this extension and steadiness. My only reservation regarding the tripod is maybe I should have bought a 4 section one as it is a bit smaller collapsed. However the more sections you have on the tripod legs and you loose some stability or rigidity at full extension. I am not that tall so rarely would I be working at full extension but... I carry the tripod in checked luggage until I get to my destination. It fits without the head diagonally on my mid sized suitcase. I just want as few things as possible to remember to pick up from overhead or under my seat before I deplane. Hope this helps!DOUG B : Great plate with the grip, never a problem.VARSHA J : I have the Arca Swiss Monoball Z1 with "Quick Set Device" … works great with my 24-105 when attached to either this Quick Release Plate 1/4 or a RRS L-bracket. I have the Gitzo 3541-L, and it really doesn't get much better than this combo. If you're seriously going to buy the 200-400 F4, you may want to consider a Gitzo 45** or 55**, since they have thicker legs.
Shopper : What models of Nikon cameras will this plate fit?MARTIN R : I don't know all models it will fit, but it works great with my D200.ED J : Hi all the universal quick release plate is really designed to hold long lenses in a situation where the weight of the lens is more-or-less over the 1/4" bolt. it has a 1-1/8" (28 mm ??) wide chamfer (about a mm deep) on the top. so the mounting surface is basically flat -- you can mount anything on it. i shoot canon, and the chamfer does not line up perfectly with my 30D camera body ... so the camera will occasionally rotate on the plate. you have to torque down the 1/4" bolt to get the camera to really hold still. if it's important to hold the camera body snugly (especially for portrait-mode shots) your shopper would probably be happier with a specialized adapter plate designed to fit the particular camera body ... cut with a chamfer that exactly grabs one of the edges of the camera. there are also corresponding 90-degree brackets, that let you mount either portrait or landscape, designed to fit very many camera bodies. not sure, but i think that both arca-swiss and weberley make these specialized adapter plates. hope this helped ... edCARL W : I don't know every Nikon camera this plate will fit, but I have a Nikon 7000. I have no problems with this plate on the Arca Swiss ballhead or A Wimberley 200 version ll Gimbalhead. Hope this information is of some help. -- CarlRUTH G : It fits my Nikon D3 perfectly!!SITANSHU G : I don't know the exact answer. But it fits my Nikon D80.DONNA D : I sent that one back because it didn't work for me. I have a Nikon d300s and bought a small plate 24x36 Item # 802225.KEVIN D : Any camera with a standard tripod mount. It simply screws into the mount socket.MATT P : I can only speak to my Nikon D7000 - it fits great. I think any camera that has the right size screw hole will work with it since it is flat. Make sure you get the right size screw... I ordered the wrong one (can't remember if this is the one I got or not).ALICE A N : Using this on a CanonDON Y : The plate has a standard size thread. I bought it for my large format camera and I think the plate is a little too big for a Nikon, but will work. Very well made plate.

Expensive, No Grip

Way to expensive for what it is. Also, no grips on it, so camera always loosens and rotates. Breakthrough Photography makes a cheaper product and has grips.

Solid as a rock

Well engineered and just does the job. I use it with a 35-100 Olympus SHG lens (1.65kg), on an Arca Swiss B1, so it quite a weight to manage, but does the job. When using the lens hand held, the plate also gives you a good surface to grip onto.

Well built plate.

I use this plate directly under my tripod heads. That way I can change the head to what ever head I want to mount on the tripod dovetail clamp. The only thing I wish they included in their design was the cap screws that prevent the head or camera from sliding out by accident. The clamp works well with Wimberly and Arca style dovetail clamps.

Looks good till now

It is kind of heavy, but stable and strong. The only bad thing is that you need a hexagonal internal screw to tighten and loosen it from the camera/lens.

Solid Release Plate

Acra Swiss makes quality products. A solidly built, basic quick release plate. I use it for 400mm amd 500mm telephoto lenses. The large surface area provides a solid mounting platform. The single 1/4" built in mounting screw has a 7/16" hex head with a slot for a large standard screwdriver or a coin. I use a 7/16" socket for tightening but a standard screw driver or a quarter coin work ok.
