I chose this particular Berlebach Tripod because of it's stability, resilience and known quality. I use it primarily for a 480mm Tele-vue Telescope and general photography, especially in low, low light. Amongst the astronomy people, wood tripods are known for settling down rapidly after adjusting or aiming one's telescope, because ash wood dampens vibration more quickly than just about any material generally available to us (and yes, that means carbon fiber as well!). Having only two sections per leg also assists in making this a really stable platform. I really like the rubber tip / spike feet option and the built in leveling ball and leveling bubble to help me even things up quickly while on uneven terrain. I think this combination will spoil me when I use other tripod set-ups! I knew this tripod was not going to be the smallest, lightest rig I could buy (I can read the specs), but I did know it was going to be stable and easy to use and be built with that good old German Craftsmanship. This tripod will outlast me, I'm sure of it, and be passed on to my relatives one day. I bought it knowingly and have no regrets. I also enjoy using (and showing off) a fine looking wooden tripod.

This is an excellent, well-made tripod. Very stable, and very good at absorbing vibration, which makes it ideal for long exposures. The leveling ball is a very useful add-on. Is this the lightest tripod on the market? No, but it offers the stability of tripods costing twice as much. Berlebach is definitely worth consideration.

I liked the look but it was too cumbersome for me so I returned it within a week. [...]

Berlebach ash wood tripods are low-vibration products. Ash wood is capable of compensating for the shudders and vibrations that constantly occur in the working environment. It will ensure that you get exceptional results with your camera or your sensitive optical or measuring equipment.
Wood is electrically non-conductive, thus preventing the damaging effects of electromagnetic fields and electrostatic charging. Thanks to their favorable weight. Berlebach ash wood tripods deliver optimum stability under load. Berlebach ash wood tripods are robust and ideal for tough day to day use.
Berlebach ash wood tripods can be used in climatic extremes. They have served, for instance, on expeditions to the north and south pole, in the desert and the rain forest. Unlike metal tripods, wooden tripods warm up very slowly in direct sunlight. In extremely cold conditions, you can touch a wooden tripod without having to wear gloves.
Berlebach has been using ash wood- a renewable raw material- for almost 100 years. The processed wood, know as sport ash, comes from the best controlled forests in Europe. It is especially hard-wearing and elastic, as well as resistant to the forces of nature.
Having been dried, the wood is stored, prior to processing, for two years to eliminate any tension within the wood as a result of growth. Several layers of protecting varnish guarantee long-term care of the wood's surface. Berlebach ash wood tripods have earned several awards for outstanding design achievement. Berlebach ash wood tripods guarantee best value for money.
The 2-section 3042 model, features a center column that is incorporated into a levelling base with a spitrit level, which provides 30° of quick correction in every direction. Being as the closer your camera is to the top of the tripod legs the better off you are, you'll be pleased to know that for many applications you won't even need a tripod head at all!
