Questions & Answers

GREG R : How waterproof is this? Are the mechanisms fully sealed? Should I worry if the head gets a soaking in the rain?
MATT R : I don't see any recommended tripod stands for this head.  I'm assuming that the Benro brand would accommodate w/o any need for adaptors/extenders etc?
Ron M : Will the  Kirk QRLB-T Universal Quick Release Tall L-Bracket fit on this?MEL H : If the Kirk QRLB-T Universal Quick Release Tall L-Bracket is Arca-swiss compatible, it should. I have no direct knowledge of this.

Excellent product

This is an excellent product - good design, low cost, sturdy implementation. Actually, I'm bit surprised, given the cost - better in many respects than my $500+ ballhead. Not sure how it stands up to wear and tear of frequent use, but it's starting out great! I should have bought it earlier.

Please include "3/8-16 tripod thread" in the description. (Does NOT come with bushing adapter to 1/4-20)

The Arca-type camera plate has a 1/4-20 bolt that one can see in the picture. What is not in the description - nor discernible in a picture is that the bottom has a 3/8-16 threaded hole for mounting to the tripod - and no 1/4-20 adapter bushing is included. All of my tripods are 1/4-20. Otherwise I am not disappointed with the head itself.

Solid Mount even with a heavy DSLR

It works better than I expected. I'm using it to attach my DSLR to a copystand and the mount has no problems keeping the camera level with the base of the copystand.

5 Plus Stars for Function and Customer Service

I original gave this a poor review; hopefully I can delete it! I did have a problem with the base plate being loose which made my images not line up. I contacted Adorama and they gave me Benro's number. I sent it back and Benro promptly either replaced it or fixed it. Just like that, I love companies that stand behind their products! The head itself is great for real estate photography!

Can't believe I waited 4 years!

I had hated on geared heads for so long, saying they were not as fast, too pricey, and just not as intuitive. BUT switching to the much heavier D750 and a Tokina 16-28mm lens meant the Ball head wasn't going to work. I bought this and at first yup not as easy, after 2 weeks I can't imaging what it was like before. My pictures are level, I can switch its orientation and level super quickly. I love it. Will never go back!

Great geared head

This head is fantastic. It has made my real estate photography so much quicker than using my old ball head. The build quality also feels excellent. The arca swiss clasp is strong and you know that your camera will not come off in it's own.

Do not hesitate to get one

Really well made and easy to use. Expected to be slower when trying to move the camera around, but really intuitive and easy to manouver. Really helps you dial in the composition, especially when using longer and heavier lenses which always creep when using a ball head. Wished I had switch to a geared head way sooner.

Not a year old and developing some issues.

After using this geared head for almost 1 year, it seems that it is developing some play. Also the caps on the end of the adjustment knobs have started to fall off occasionally.

Overall I’m happy with it, especially for the price. I like how it looks on my manfrotto tripod... lol

Great for the price. Left to right turning on the bottom dial is a little ruff.

Precise

Precise, easy to set up, easy to adjust. It is strong but lightweight. I haven’t had it long enough to speak to long-term durability, but so far, so good. I would strongly recommend this based on my experience so far. It would s a great improvement over a ball head in terms of precision adjustment.

Great gear head, at a great price.

Exceptional. Works as advertised, only better. Micro adjustments are very precise and camera holds its position without having to tighten head. Very well made, should last for years. Highly recommend this product.

Good for the Fine tune adjustments

So good, I have two. I was using it on one of my tripods for some time and really loved using it. It was for my Commercial Real Estate that I do. When I bought another Tripod for my other interests I got another one of these. doing Landscape it works great, love the find tune adjustments you can do without losing up a normal Ball Head. One thing you have to know. It is very low on your Tripod, the adjustment screw can hit the side of your Tripod legs. So if you have a Tripod with a center column no problems. But as I found out on one of my Tripods without the center column you need to purchase a riser, spaces adapter... To get the clearance

Great tripod

Great head, the only down side is the attachment, if you have a very large plate(my case) you will have to have an extension to move the head further up from the tripod base, if you don’t do that you won’t be able to move side to side, other then that was a great addition, made my life easier, good price point too.

I Mostly Love This Tripod Head

The 3-geared options are great - they really make for exacting positioning of the camera. The one issue I have is that as a senior citizen in my 70s I find the knurled knobs somewhat difficult to turn - which I'm sure is intentional (in a good way) to prevent slippage. That said I hurt my hands - nothing serious! - when turning the knurled knobs.

Robust and precise. Excellent finish.

This is a classy device, very capable, and compact for what it does. Each axis has a coarse adjustment, to position your camera, and a geared fine adjustment to fine-tune your framing. The build of the device is robust, and perfectly suited to larger, full -frame DSLRs. The only reservation I would express is the coarse adjustment knobs are small, with very stiff springs, and could be difficult or painful to use for anyone without strong hands and thumbs, and could lead to some hand fatigue after a day of use. Otherwise a fine and great looking precision product.

Great head for fine movements

I use this for my telescope for the sun. It has a very narrow viewing angle, so I need fine adjustments. This head works perfectly for that. It is a solid base and secures the the weight of the telescope easily. It is great for fine adjustments and can also make bigger movements, but usually in one direction at a time.

Little bit of wiggle

I'm comparing this to the Manfrotto 410 - which I also own. Both this and the Manfrotto knobs are stiff. My Manfrotto eventually became easier to turn the knobs so I expect this Benro will eventually become smoother too. Also, both heads have a little bit of play in the horizontal movement. They both wiggle a bit. I was hoping the Benro wouldn't wiggle. But it turns out, the Benro wiggles more than my Manfrotto. My idea of a geared head is that it should provide precision. The play in this head (as well as my Manfrotto) is annoying. My expectations for a geared head is that it should only move when the gears are turned. Might not seem like a big deal until you realize the camera shifted a bit even though you didn't turn the gears. When stacking frames in post, they no longer line up accurately so you end up cropping the edges. I wouldn't recommend this if you have similar expectations for geared heads. To be fair, I have never used an expensive one so I don't know if the wiggle problem goes away with spending more money. I will keep using this because I like the Arca-Swiss Style plate.

Seems well made

Although I don't have many miles on it yet I like the way it works. The controls work smooth and it seems plenty stout for the gear I will be using on it. D800, 17-35mm, 24-70mm, and occasionally the 70-200mm. I got it for real estate work and it's performing very well.

Finally Picked One Up!

I'm glad I found this one. I was looking at the Manfrotto version and they were more expensive. I use this for real estate photography. I love the precision. I use it with the builtin level on my D750. The only issue that I have is I am using Spider Holsters on my 2 D750s and one is setup for left hand and the other for right hand so I can't switch cameras back and forth due to the layout of the dials. But that's not the head's fault. Love it!

Highly Recommend Benro GD3WH

I have always used various ball heads. Went on a photography workshop in Scotland and the local photographers raved about gear heads. When I saw the new Benro GD3WH purchased it as soon as it was available. Great piece of kit. works as advertised particularly if you are into landscape photography. Highly recommend.

Would be great if....

The head is solid and inexpensive. Has been a wonderful relief from the ballhead. I shoot interiors. The problem - It "weeps" black grease from all three of the seams around the blue plates covering the three axis... you wipe if off, but it comes back - it gets on your hands and clothes - you can hear and see it "weeping" out as the axis are articulated. It's not much, but it doesn't have to be when it's black grease and you're operating several thousand dollars in camera gear... What a bummer.
