Pass On This One

After over a year of use with nothing but frustration i recommend if you are considering this printer, pass on by! Even if you use over priced Epson paper there is no assurance your printer will print on it without multiple sheets being destroyed in the process. Evreytime I press the print key I feel I have better odds of hitting a jackpot in Vegas than getting 4x6 photo to print. it is frustrating to have to disassemble the printer only to find jammed bent paper and a notification to reload paper. I really feel I have wasted my $600 on this printer. Even when you contact HP support it is resolved to be your problem. Waste of time and money.

Not reliable

I purchased the ET8550 and the photo quality was amazing and it's compatible with my Cricut maker. But I started having problems with this printer 7 month after purchase. The printer stop pulling the paper from the cassette 2 tray. I receiving an out of paper error code although there's paper inside cassette 2 tray. I contacted epson and sent the printer back, epson then sent me a refurbished printer.. GREAT! Then 5 months after receiving the refurbished printer the same thing happened again. Thank goodness I purchased insurance on this printer because now I need to find another printer. I have a small business that is dependent on me being able to print without delays but unfortunately 8550 isn't reliable.

Awful printer

Do not buy. Super slow printer and customer service is awful. Very glitchy connection. Would not recommend. Better get another brand.

Broke less than 2 years in.

Purchased 11/2024. Broke 2/2026. Confirmed with tech support that it was a hardware issue and that they recommend I purchase a new printer at a 40% discount because I was out of warranty. I spent $800 on this printer back in 2024 because it was touted as "professional." It is anything but.

Easy setup, bad software decisions

Very easy to set up. I wanted this for multi-purpose usage - documents AND good quality photos. So far B&W printing is good, but colour on ordinary paper is washed out - my old Epson WF printer did a better job - very minor use though, so perhaps I can tweak it with software, but on that note...When was the last time you saw a CDROM player in a computer? For me it is at least 7 years, perhaps more - yet Epson sees fit to supply software on a CD. ARE YOU KIDDING? Put is on a USB stick, or at the very least supply a QR code that points directly at it on the web. Sheesh!

Easy Peasy set up !!

I just got my new printer set up, which BTW was really easy. Used it for the 1st time to print a couple 13x19 photos, and absolutely love the way they look . I highly recommend this printer to anyone wishing to print larger photos !

Two problems

The prints are great. There are two problems with the design. In order to change the paper in Cassette 2, you have to push in the paper tray. The tray does not feel particularly sturdy, so repeated pushing worries me. No problems yet except time wasted. Second, it looks like it is designed not to let you use the ink in the bottom third or half of the ink tank. My printer didn't work properly when the GY tank still showed 1/2 full. This is a really annoying feature.

Anticipation?

I decided NOT to open the box and install the new printer until I return from the Christmas/New Years celebrations. That project needs my undecided care and attention.

Great print quality/Poor durability/Terrible customer servic

This printer prints great photo's. I love having multiple paper and print options. It worked great for 18 months and now has a paper handling error and I can not print anything. Since I am not near a service center the cost of repair is too high. Reaching out to customer service is a waste of time. They asked me to perform the maintenance that I can find on the website and nothing more. They quickly punted and said I need a new printer and gave me a coupon code for a small discount. Against better judgement and because when it worked I loved the quality I thought I would try again and was even will to pay for the extended service plan, but low and behold my discount code would not apply to the same printer I had purchased earlier. I am completely appalled with Epson's customer service. "We apologize for the inconvenience." Well the apology is empty for an almost $800 printer.

Get ready for Disappointment

I purchased this ET-8550 printer and began having issues 1 month in. The photo paper will not feed. I purchased Epson photo paper with the same results. It crinkles the edge of the photo paper and will not feed it. I checked to make sure that the foam rollers that feed the paper were clean, tried several different types, brands and finishes of photo paper all with the same result. Only Epson ink and very few prints and its a paper weight, and such a disappointment. We are now a year into this printer. We have reached out to Epson and like many other reviewers -good luck! i hope your sanity is still intact. Plan on sending pictures of your printer, receipt, inside of printer photos, paper, ink bottles etc. 6 times or more-seriously. Let me just tell you plan on hearing how they didn't receive them, cant open them, to send them to a different email and every excuse imaginable to frustrate you in hopes that you just give up. When you do finally get somewhere plan on a person who is not able to comprehend what your saying without an interpreter sitting by their side explaining what you have just said over and over and over again. If you do receive a resolution here are their two options: 1 We will ship you a factory refurbished (aka already broke once piece of junk) but we will need to place a 499.00 dollar hold on your credit or debit card so we can be assured you will mail your broken one back to us. Option 2: You mail us your printer and wait while we receive it in and check it for malfunctions or defects and if we believe you have done everything correctly we will send you a replacement ( again a factory refurbished unit that was someone else's problem previously), however we cant tell you how long this will take. Sure Epson will reply how sorry they are that I am having issues and a number to call the service department As soon as I want to torture myself for some unknown reason I'll get right on that! You have been warned! Epson you want to make this right? don't send me someone else's reject for the love of God show you are a reputable company and do the right thing.

One Year Later: Disappointed and Would Not Recommend

We bought the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550 almost a year ago, and unfortunately, it has been one of the worst printers we've ever owned. We were hoping for a compact, business-friendly/ home use (Photo) printer with EcoTank technology, but this model has been nothing but frustrating. First, it has no document feeder, which means you can't scan multi-page documents, a major drawback for business use. On top of that, unless you're printing constantly or running frequent cleanings, the print heads clog easily, and the print quality becomes terrible. Connectivity has also been a major issue. The printer is hardwired, yet it regularly refuses to go online. Often, the only fix is to power-cycle the printer just to get a simple document to print. The automatic document/output tray is another pain point. It's supposed to extend and retract on its own, but now it only works sporadically. Most of the time, it won't retract at all, leaving the tray stuck in the extended position. Overall, we're extremely dissatisfied. We've owned multiple Epson printers in the past and they've been just okay, and HP hasn't been any better for us either. At this point, we're ready to look outside both brands for something more reliable.

A good printer with a few exceptions

I've long been a fan of Epson printers and owned a few from the largest on down. This 8550 is a fine printer and produces remarkable prints. However, the detailed instructions that come with this printer are confusing and inadequate. A continuous review of online instruction is mandatory to achieve expected results. But the worst fact is that I just bought this printer from Epson two weeks ago and just now they dropped the price by $250! What an insult to a loyal buyer. I feel cheated and my respect for Epson dropped a mile.

Horrible quality after only one year

i have hated this printer from the beginning and wish i had returned it. i am an artist and graphic designer. the quality started going down and now it is horrible. i did the nozzle head checks three times but the prints just kept getting worse. when i called tech support, he said it was out of warranty and he couldn't help me. I would have to take it to an Epson dealer but he would give me a 15% discount on a new printer....Wow, what a deal (sarcasm). And the tech support replies to these bad reviews are crap. they say you can call the number for help but as i said, i got none. One of the replies to a bad review says we have phone support for the life of the product, which is another lie. Don't buy this printer. I don't think i will buy any other Epson product.

Excellent printer but with some major problems.

Didn't encounter this criticism in my product research, but the resolution of the LCD Screen is very low, and very much lower than the screens of other Epson printers I've owned. This is inexcusable for such an expensive printer and a significant problem for visually challenged users. A good example is the password entry screen - the characters are difficult to see, and data entry is laborious, particularly if you have neuromuscular problems affecting the fingers. I don't think my idol Shaq ever used this printer. Other than that, setup, including Wi-Fi connection (iMac, MacBook Air, iPhones), was relatively straightforward, and printing/copying was excellent after 1 day of use. Haven't tried photo paper yet.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER

DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER. Purchased this printer in the beginning of July for my business. It stopped working 2 months later. Epson is unable to send me a replacement printer per their warranty due to warehouse issues and stating this printer is on backorder. They are unable to give me a date on when they will have a printer to send me. It's been 2 weeks. I asked for a refund which was denied since that is not part of their warranty. Since I have a business to run, I had to purchase a Canon megatank printer as a replacement. DO NOT BUY!! Customer Service is horrible. Matches the printer.

When will my ink arrive?????

Worst service I've ever experienced, from now on I'll only order generic inks, not inks from Epson. If I can't get generic inks, I'll simply toss this printer. You took my money almost immediately, came through on my bank statement real quick, where's the ink... about a week later still in process!!!. Pity I can't put zero stars.

Slow, subpar paperweight

This has to be the slowest inkjet printer I have ever owned. Even when setting is at standard print quality. It took over 90 minutes to print a 23 page design presentation after it randomly cancelled the print job twice during the process. The print quality on matte presentation paper is also subpar. I wish I could get my $750 back. Garbage bound.

Amazing prints but requires a bit of learning

This printer prints amazing. I will say though, and the reason for my 4 star instead of 5 star, is there is a learning curve. Perhaps it is just me. I use an ipad. On my old Epson ET 2800 (i think) I could just send whatever to printer. When i use that technique for this printer the printed page is not formatted properly. The only way i could get the page to look like the picture i was printing was to use the Epson app. So then I had to learn how to use that. And this printer is a little fussy about its paper. I had to learn to change paper settings when I print on different types of paper. With my old printer it didn't matter. Everything printed the same whether it was photo paper or plain copy paper. Of course the vibrance was different, but the ink going on the paper seemed to be the same. And with this printer you need to do routine maintenance. I did not know that until i ran into printer issues. First, the black ink was smearing. Next the paper kept getting stuck in the printer. There is a menu for maintenance. I am sure all this is online somewhere but who looks for that? It the 'olden days' printers and pretty much everything else came with manuals that you could thumb through. Fortunately I have ChatGPT and use it daily so Chat told me how to do the maintenance and now my printer is once again printing beautifully. I do a lot of printing. I had this for probably a month and my ink is already half gone. That is not a complaint. I do a lot of printing. I use the printer for craft projects. You will not be disappointed in the quality of prints you get from this printer but you may get a small headache or frustrated like I did.

Pizza wheels destroy what was almost amazing printer.

I love this as a basic printer... but one FATAL flaw for those hoping to use it as a photography printer (which you could be mistaken for given its calle dthe Eco Tank PHOTO printer. If you print on any sort of glossy paper (and much if not all luster) there are visible vertical "pizza wheel" marks that will show in reflections for all prints. That with the (attractively more economical) non pigmet based inks (ignoring black) mean all the draws to use this as a photo printer are moot if not behind significant asterisks. It's a great printer I'll use for documents and printing material for me DND game but if you are interested in selling prints from a printer... this isn't it. I really wanted it to be becasuse the Cannon 1100 costs as much as this printer just to refill the ink, but it's not it. If they fixed this ONE issue with the feeder wheels it would be the reigning champ printer, undisputed... but this brings it down from 5 star to a generous 3. A photo printer should not damage photo prints... full stop. (I did adjust many settings per google searches such as thick paper settings, slow print... etc. There is not a fix for most if not all paper with any gloss to them... This makes me a sad man. To touch on missing review topics. Connectivity is amazing and functionality would be great if it did not damage your prints.

Do not buy this junk save your money.

Junk I have owned 7 of these printers in the past 3 years. That alone should speak of the quality. They constantly break. They barely get 3000 prints out of a unit. Paper jams, parts falling out, firmware issues stating transportation lock is on when it's not. The support is garbage from Epson. My last printer that was set for warranty exchange I was charged a deposit. I was sent a refurbished unit right away. Then Epson neglected to send me a return address label to send back the broken one so I was charged the deposit amount even though they neglected to send me the return label. What sort of racket are they running. Another unit stopped working shortly after the warranty expired. That particular unit had less than 1000 prints so I took it to their service centre to have it checked and the mother board is fried and the cost to repair that unit would be 600-800$ LESS THAN 1000 prints made in a 1250$ printer. Not one of the printers I have bought in the last three years has made it over 3000 prints total. I have had numerous warranty exchanges and some of them we just threw in the trash because they broke shortly after the warranty period. How is it a company this size can make a printer that cost this much and it can't even make it barley past a year. I have tried to deal with the customer service on multiple occasions but the service sucks. And now I'm out 1250 dollars on a unit with less than 1000 prints not to mention the 500 they scammed me because they didn't send me the return label to send back another broken unit. If you smart you would find a better option then the 8550 or maybe any Epson unit period. We're not searching for another solution for our business. Epson eco tanks are unreliable and for a business that relies on printing we certainly need a better options.

Epson ET-8550 A must buy

This device is absolutely AWESOME! I just bought it, and after owning many printers over the years, I can say the print quality and performance of this inkjet are truly astonishing. The borderless printing results depend somewhat on the media you use, but overall the quality at this price point is outstanding. On top of that, the ink costs are very reasonable compared to what you'd expect for this level of output. I really love this printer-it's exceeded my expectations. Japanese brands like Epson remind me of Toyota: reliable, durable, and built with exceptional attention to detail. Highly recommended!

Really large and expensive paperweight

This is my second 8550 that will not print gray. No matter how many times I clean the nozzle there is always lines missing on the gray, sometimes the other colours too. I can't print photos with it which is the whole point, I've already returned one which said one of the parts was end of life - I had it for less than 24 hours! I'm so dreading calling Epson customer service that I've put it off for almost a whole week but I'm not sure what else to do.
