I had several questions about this item...and I gave you an answer non specific to your question. So... to answer YOUR question... This item does not have a button at all, and does not rotate horizontally. Sorry for the confusion. Shotgun FrankFRANK C : This product works as advertised. I've used it a lot to support a small camcorder with a pan head. It gets a lot of use. No problems at all.THOMAS K : It is exactly the same as the original. At the bottom it has the rubber protective cover as you can see. Take that off and there is the two hole that the push button goes into from your long shaft. To respond to shopper: The short column can be used horizontally. I have used it in that fashion. My original longer column and the short column do not have push buttons. Perhaps Manfrotto changed their longer column design & added a push button to the longer column since I made my original tripod purchase about 10 years ago.ERNESTO Q : No it does not. The end is a rubber plug with two nobs that fit into two holes. I use it mostly with the Manfrotto 393 gimbal head. CHRISTOPHER C : The rubber cap on the bottom of this column comes off to reveal two holes...if I understand your question right I have (from my longer column) a triangular piece with a 3/8" mount thread on top that slips into the short column end that has a push button to hold it in place. Regards...ChrisSTEVEN R : no it doesn't you just remove the rubber cap at bottom and insert just don't loose the cap ! the short column comes in very handy when changing heads !Dennis S : No. It no more than the longer version cut off to a shorter length with a rubber cap put over the end.ANDREW M : It can be used in a horizontal position, but there is no button. There is a rubber cover on the bottom of the column that needs to be removed to install/remove the column. It would also have to be removed to go from vertical to horizontal. The cap is very tightly fitted to the column and not the easiest thing to remove. This is both a pain and a blessing, means you cannot accidentally remove the column, but also need to put a little effort into removing it I use these as quick change options for my heads. Have one on my Gimbal head and also a three way head, no need to unscrew anything to change heads :). Neither head are ones I might use in a horizontal position, but certainly could if I needed to Hope this help

WORKS BUT NOT THE SAME AS OLDER COLUMNS

Bought this part to get a shorter column for an older (around 1997) Bogen-Manfrotto G55GSB/3221W tripod. The two sectional column that came with the tripod is round and has a flat base pad with a rubber bumper/washer. This column is different. The column is not round and has both round and flat sides. Also has an angled base and an angled rubber bushing which is contoured to fit the shape of the column. It is pictured correctly on the web site. If you tun the bushing over and rotate it, for the most part, it levels the column however the column has to be locked in to not wobble. It is usable, but just be aware it is not the same design that came with the older B/M model G55GSB/3221W.

Great Addition to your Tripod

I use this column with a ball head to make swapping heads on my tripod fast and efficient. The rubber end cap must be removed for the swap, and I wonder just how long it will hold up to being taken off each time. The construction is up to Manfrotto standards otherwise. The short column does allow the tripod to place the camera closer to the ground, and it does give marginal weight reduction.

Works Well

The long center column that came with my tripod was fine, except that it's length seemed to get in my way more than I was using it. This shorter column allows me to get the tripod closer to the ground (by spreading the legs out) without having the move the center column.

This Manfrotto Short Center Column, (Black) is an option for the 055X series and 3011N, 3021N, 3221WN and 3021PRO series tripods. While most of these tripods include a low angle adapter which is built into the standard center column, with loss of up/down control, this optional Short Center Column still retains vertical movement control.

It is ideal for situations where the legs are set at about 60 degrees, the third angle of inclination, but still require the possibility to move the camera up and down to achieve the correct adjustment for your shot. This shorter column will thus replace the one that is supplied with the tripod.
