This is the "brass monkey" of photography, aptly called because no one ever know what its actual name is. Without this spigot, there would be no off-camera lighting. It's essential for mounting cold-shoes and lighting modifiers to the lighting adapter.

The short answer, buy several. They're amazing, compact, and you'll always find that you need one more for a shoot!
