I like to take portraits in the person’s own home (or other environment), which is more natural and reflective of their lives. I can put a couple of these stands, reflective umbrellas with diffuser covers, and speedlights in a relatively small bag and take high quality portraits away from the studio.

I love how portable and light this stand is. Perfect for holding speedlites or profoto’s a1. I do not recommended this stand for heavy light setups.

size does matter... when you travel. It fits in a carry on luggage and is perfect for speedlights. If you travel and you work with speedlights, you need these.

These stands are great for traveling light as they fold down to a small size. I like that the Mounting stud will take either the common small thread or the common large thread so you can mount virtually every photo accessory made. It is intended for lighter weights though. I like that I can easily put them in a small bag with other photo accessories and fit them in my suitcase if I fly.

I'm a sound designer and field recordist. I do all my outdoor recordings alone and I carry enough gear as is and I require two mic stands, one mic being an 8lb binaural dummy head. I understand these stands are built for lights but thus far the Manfrotto 5001B 6' has served me well at the beach, in a creek, in a forest, and in a meadow. I've had no tilting issues. More important, the weight of these stands have made my 1-5 mile hikes out to the right setup spot bearable. I have no complaints but if I run into one I'll be sure to update my review.

I use constant lighting for travel and needed small and light stands that would work for my lights and fit in a travel case. This stand fit the bill perfectly.

They are a good build quality and are sturdy enough for quick indoor use. I like the large footprint as it helps everything feel more stable, but it is a bit of a trip hazard in a small studio. These wouldn't do well outside in wind, but combine them with a lightweight umbrella and they work very well as stands for my Nikon Speedlights. I wavered over the choice for way too long. These were excellent for my purposes, and because they are so light, I use them way more than I expected.

This lightstand is light weight and compact. Perfect with an inexpensive ($10) ballhead to mount up a Nikon Speedlight for off-camera flash in support of my passion for hummingbird photography and macro photography. Better get yourself a bag to carry with it though.

I bought my second stand to take with me to Europe. I can pack both of these in my suitcase and I will use them indoors with Nikon Speed Lights. I also take them for small shoots on location when I don't have an assistant to help me carry equipment.....I put these into my rolling camera bag and use another shoulder bag for a Lastolite soft box set up.

It is what you expect from a lightweight stand. Great for using portable flash with umbrella. Not good to use with standard strobe head i.e. pro photo just not strong enough when extended.

this stand is perfect for travel purposes..i need to have stands that can fit in the suitcase that can board the plane with me..these are not intended for heavy duty outdoor stuff but are great when photographing small children and babies ..and need something to go to someones home with..its a bit pricey but you trade off with convenience..i don't mind having something at the base to support them since its only for temporary shoots..i use sturdier ones for my home setup...

I have no complaints so far. I've used this during a couple shoots I've done with various people and it's easy to tote around and simple to set up. It may be small and underweight if you're working outdoors but some sandbags could help with that. It has a good height range. I'm extremely happy with the purchase.

Well made light stand that is compact, lightweight, and easy to pack. Strong for its weight. Everything fits right and works smoothly unlike some cheaper imitations.

I was worried about the build quality, but when they arrived I was pleasantly surprised! They're better built than my standard Paul C Buff light stands. Are great for travel - but not suitable for a strobe/light with an umbrella/softbox.

The only thing I'd like to see in this product is a couple of D-rings, so I can attach a shoulder best to it.

I purchased this to use with an SB-800 and a small umbrella. I this setup to be very unstable when set to it's max height. I'm glad I don't have to use it that high yet, but if I did, I would be too scared to use it without some additional support on the base, such as sandbags, or lazy cats.

First off, it's the lightstand recommended by Strobist. Ok, let's get past that. This lightstand is a compromise. It's very lightweight, and it collapses extremely small. That's wonderful. I like that. Collapsed and with an umbrella bungied to it as recommended by Strobist, it is a very portable and nice bit of kit. But....... This lightstand has three legs that do not make a very large footprint. With an umbrella attached, it will fall over in the slightest breeze. Some people recommend ankle weights to secure it, and a 5 pound ankle weight on each leg does work well. I suppose they carry around the ankle weights and continue to gloat about how light the lightstand is. For myself, I consider the 5001B to be a lightstand limited to indoors, or being held upright by an assistant if used outside with an umbrella. An alternative is to ditch the umbrella and bounce the speedlight off a wall, but then, you don't have total control of direction or distance. Construction is what you expect from Manfrotto, although the materials are lightweight. The leg joints are riveted. Once the rivets wear out, they can easily be replaced with the same, or nuts and bolts. As far as which light it can support, speedlights only. Don't even think about a monolight. The stand can manage it, but it will be grossly top heavy. All in all, this is a lightstand directed towards a specific purpose...... traveling light and compact. It performs that role extremely well. The trade-off is a loss of stability once it is set up.

Make sure you get a manfrotto or lumedyne umbrella bracket. Once you have one of those, you will have a perfect setup that can take a hit.

Great, compact stand.

A great lightweight stand that can fit in an carry-on bag. Not large enough to hold a softbox - but it can hold an umbrella easily. Bought these after seeing Bob Krist's carry-on list and haven't regretted it.
