Questions & Answers

STEVE K : How far does this extend as a boom and will it hold a Flashpoint XPLOR 600 strobe (or should I also get the flash head extender to lighten it up) with large modifier?
Shopper : Can #9545 casters be used with this product?JOHN V : I have no knowledge of casters being available for this product by Manfrotto or aftermarket supplier. I did not investigate when I purchased the stand. Would not use casters myself if available. Especially with a boom arm, I don't want any movement of the light stand. So I sandbag all of my light stands for stability.CARL B : Yes. I added casters to mine...but it is awkward when rolling it around.PAOLO F : I believe so, but you might want to get a sturdier boom stand if you are planning to put it on wheels. I usually use this stand with a 21" beauty dish and SB-910 speedlight adapter and their weight is borderline for the strength of this stand. The boom flexes quite a bit and I definitely don't extend it all the way. This is not a heavy duty stand.
Shopper : Hello, can you tell me if this will hold an SB900 and a small LiteDome? Can you use it as a standard light stand i.e. a shoot-through umbrella or would another setup be more versatile (i.e. a separate light stand entirely). Are there other parts needed to connect those items to the stand?THOMAS A K : Hi. I will tell you what my experience has been with this stand. First, the overall fit and finish is nice, what you'd expect out of Manfrotto. The counterbalance pouch has a good amount of velcro to secure your weight. I use free weights and it works great. On this stand, I've used anything from a bare light up to an Octabox. Normally I use a beauty dish and sometimes a grid with that, and this isn't an issue. If I had any negative comments, I would say I wouldn't mind if it went a little higher and wider, and also, the feet could extend out further. But overall, 4 out of 5.JOHN V : sandbag base of this or any other stand if you are putting a load on it. I balance the boom itself with a nice selection of smooth river rocks. I use mine primarily for mounting a hair light overhead or occasionally hanging a foam core reflector panel. I use another stand without boom for other setups involving umbrellas or soft boxes. You have choice of good items at reasonable price points. I strive for balance between durability and portability since I drag this stuff around to location shoots. Your requirements may differ.ARNOLD D : This stand/boom is sturdy enough for most applications. I have used beauty dishes, soft boxes mounted on Alien Bees flashes with no problems. You can also add weights to your stand to make it a more solid stand.BRENNAN I : It will hold a sb900 and small litedome easily and you can use it as a regular light stand. Always make sure to use your sand bags to weigh it downPAOLO F : This stand will definitely hold an SB-910 with any kind of light modifier. I used it with a large 24" beauty dish and it worked ok. Depending on what light modifier you are using though you might need some extra bracket. The stand provides a classical 1/4" or 5/8" stud. The key is to counter balance it with the proper weight and don't extend the boom too much or it gets flimsy. In other words, it's a good stand, not as sturdy as a C-stand but still a good convertible stand. And I would recommend using it with a couple sandbags holding it firmly on the ground if you attach something heavy.SEIDLITZ T : The Manfrotto 420 Boom Stand is VERY strong and very versatile being a LARGE standard light stand OR a boom stand. It comes with a 'sandbag' and double-ended brass male fitting that can be mounted "in-line' or 90 degreees to the boom. It is absolutely strong enough for my Paul C Buff AlienBees 1600, Lithium battery and Medium Octodome (5' diameter) when used in a standard upright configuration. When used as a 'boom' stand the key is weighting the base with a ballast and balancing the extension length. Of course the more you 'split' the extension, the shorter you can extend your light. I try to keep that weight down... rated at 4.4lbs at full extension but will easily handle my Canon 580exii and a small Octodome. I use two one gallon water jugs with molded handles (rather than the 'sand' bags) clipped with LARGE carabiners (from Home Depot)that clip through the handle and around the vertical tube above the tripod base. I use another one gallon bottle of water hanging from the empty sandbag. Be sure to keep the extended boom OVER one of the tripod legs for stability. (A Manfrotto 026 Swivel Lite-Tite Umbrella adapter is helpful for angling as a standard configuration, but adds too much wasted weight when extended as a boom.) I love this stand!JAMES W : It easily holds my Pentax 540 flash unit, and would hold more if I added more counterweight. You could use it for an umbrella, although I have two dedicated umbrella stands that may be better suited. You will need a swivel adapter to mount a flash or other apparatus. My current use is with a small Sunpak flash as a slave for hair lighting, and it works superbly! Hope this helps you, the stand is of good quality and I have been well satisfied with it. Regards!TOAN C : Yes. I put a strobe and a 5ft octabank and it holds up great. Make sure to have equal balance weightJames A : It is fantastically versatile- You can use it purely vertically or as a boom virtually horizontally. In order to attach an SB-910, 900, etc... you need this adapter: "Manfrotto 026 Swivel Lite-Tite Umbrella Adapter" I have two of the stands and adapters. Adapter is a bit cheap, but works. I'd buy a backup. You can only mount an umbrella and a speedlight with this adapter. (You can mount the speedlight like an "L" orientation to the umbrella, or axially along the shaft of the umbrella in order to get the light head more toward the center of the umbrella for evenness).KATHY G : I use mine to support a 50" Apollo softbox with a SB800. It is sturdy and I can adjust it to many angles - from the side, overhead, side tilted, etc. I use hand weights in the sandbag and that works very well. The counter weight of the sandbag comes in very handy when you have the boom extended. I've used it as a standard light stand with an adjustable flash shoe both vertically as well as a horizontal boom. I also use it as a stand for umbrellas and to support an Apollo strip lightbox. This was definitely one of my best purchases - I use it every time I shoot strobes. For the money, it is a great buy for it's sturdiness and versatility. The only accessory you will need for an umbrella or an Apollo softbox (uses umbrella frames) is this: Interfit Photographic Strobie Metal Umbrella Bracket with Adjustable Flash Shoe$22.49ROBERT I : Hi, I have used this stand a lot and I love it. It can definitely hold a SB900 and a small LiteDome. I have actually used it with a studio flash head as well, but just be sure to have enough counter weight on it. If you want to put a SB900 on it with a umbrella, you will need a bracket of some kind that you like to attach the flash to that also holds a umbrella, but they are found easily enough. I want to eventually get a second one of these because I liked it that much.

Such a great light stand!!!!!

What a great stand!!! We’ve had this thing for probably three years now, and it just holds up like a champ! Well made, nice quality materials. Probably had this on 20 photo shoots, mostly of children. This boom really helps position to higher and really low angles without any pole in the way. The only way this thing could be better is if you attached castor wheels, which I believe they sell.

Good Quality Boom Stand

I've been using this equipment more than a year, and recently bought another one. I definitely like to recommend this. I gave only three stars for this because when I got the package, a stud( or ratchet handle) was missing. Without the missing part, I cannot lock a boom arm and making it useless. I read some of reviews who bought in amazon, and some of the people also did not get the ratchet handle. So I assume it is common when you purchase Manfrotto products. Therefore, if you are going to buy, one should check that there is no missing part.

Buy it and be done

I own two of these, one black and one chrome. They support Rovelight R 600's w/beauty dish or 4' softbox. The larger wheels (the more expensive of the two options) are the ones to add. They are more compatible on carpet or other softer surfaces. Remove if outdoors on grass, etc. These stands are sturdy, well built and easy to use. If you value what your mounting on a stand, get the best, this one.

Sturdy, versatile, affordable

Slightly larger and heavier than purpose built light stands or booms, this convertible stand saves you from having to carry multiple pieces of gear. Works.

sturdy ,flexible and easy to use

The Manfrotto Boom Stand 420B is sturdy, flexible and easy to use. I recently used it to hang 30"x40" 1" thick foam core as a backdrop and hung the material with clamps. The boom stand worked flawlessly. It has a nice compromise between weight , size and stability. The maximum height that the boom arm comes out at is approx. 5 ft. I wish that it would have about another foot. (But then one would contend with more weight and lack of portability). so I guess it is a good compromise. I also used it with a 24 x 224 Lastolight softbox and was solid as a rock (without using the weight!). Great product!

Very Satisfied with this Stand

Metal construction is solid. Very intuitive and easy to use. Extends far enough. metal finish is nice. I use this product with a strobe and softbox. Note that the sandbag is BYO-sand. I would probably want a second sandbag if I were to extend the boom when working on unstable ground outside.

Very Nice

For the price point it is perfect, just make sure you have the proper counter weight to go with it. Can hold the weight it says and then some.

very good product

I bought 3 of these for use as a mobile studio in the strobist stle of photography. The boom is capable of taking a flash head and 40 cm softbox, although at full boom extension the boom exhibits some flexing. This is no problem however. I add extra weight to the stand legs when doing this. Manfrotto makes a solid product. I still use a manfrotto tripod i bought 30 years ago, so hopefully will not need more light stands for quite some time.

Manfrotto Boom Stand 420

I don't have any other 'boom' stands, so can't compare, but I am very happy with mine so far. It's the same quality as other Manfrotto non-boom stands, of which I own three. I have mine supporting a Nikon SB800 and a 36 inch umbrella. It seems very sturdy, and setup was simple. The clamps hold tight. I like that I can get the umbrella directly over the subject, and fairly high.
