The perfect lightweight 3-way head

I used to own the big 405 geared head and although it was pretty beefy and had smooth controls, it was overkill for a lot of stuff, especially after I moved away from big DSLRs with 70-200/2.8s and the like over ten years ago. It's nice to have the gearing when you're doing precision stuff in the studio but 99% of the time I'm working in the field. Furthermore I used to drive to locations whereas now I take the subway or walk so weight is a big consideration. My heaviest rig is a Bronica SQ-Ai 6x6 with AE prism, motor grip and the 110/4 Macro and fully deployed it is easily 4 pounds or more. This head, mounted on a Manfrotto aluminum tripod, had no problems even in high wind. Most recommend that you have your head limit be double your heaviest rig but I have had no issues in three years of use. When you want to work fast and light but still want the precise movements of a 3-way head, I can't recommend this one enough.

Just what I was looking for

After never really falling in love with ball-heads I wanted to go back to the pan/tilt/swivel design, and I wanted a head that would work with a telephoto that didn't have long tightening arms sticking out all over the place. Though with a support weight of only 6.6 pounds I had my doubts about this product, but the Manfrotto name got me to dish out the cash. Thankfully this head holds up my 5D and 100-400 L series solidly. Good design, fluid movement, sexy looking, light weight. I will, however, always wish for support gear that holds more and weighs less.

Manfrotto 460MG head

Really sturdy and no creep. Very easy to use and versatile in landscape and portrait mode. I don't know why I waited so long buy this head.

Excellent Head

I use this head with a Nikon D200 with the MB-D200 grip. It's a heavy camera, heavier than the suggested load rating on this head. Still, the head is rock solid. Personally I believe the weight rating of the head is greater six pounds. The RC2 quick disconnect is a solid design with a safety catch. The knobs on the head are large enough to be easily adjusted, locked or just snugged for tension. The knobs are rubberized for easy loosening. The head compacts nicely for packing away the tripod. I prefer a ball head for portraiture, but this head is the one I go to for almost anything else.

Exceeds ball head usability

This pan head is far superior to any ball head I have used. It is a set and forget tension adjust, makes for smooth fore and aft transitioning. No creep after set tension. No need to fully lock and unlock as are ball heads when need to reposition.

An innovative 3D head unlike any other! Designed for use with 35mm SLRs and medium format cameras, it is also the ideal head when used in combination with the Carbon One Tripod.

Cast from lightweight magnesium, the head can be positioned in virtually any position to get the exact framing of the image.

The lock-system, using spring-loaded conical joints, allows greater flexibility than any other 3D head - whether mounted on a tripod center column or lateral arm. The rubber grip knobs provide finger tip control. Supplied with quick release plate.

What's in the box:

  • 200PL Quick Release Plate
  • 1/4 "-20 Screw
