Questions & Answers

Shopper : I'm not a professional photographer. I have a small SONY digital camera. Can I use that with this. And if so, do I need to buy any other equipment to complete the use of this product?RICHARD R : Yes. The secret is that the threaded post which screws into the bottom of the camera is designed with both 1/4" and 1/8" threads. If your camera is threaded for 1/8" you just have to push down on the monopod threaded post. And, amazingly, the 1/4" threaded piece slips down exposing the 1/8" threads. Works great and I use it often.SASIBHUSHAN U : Yes, it will work for point and shoots. The monopos should suffice by itself. Good Luck.CRAIG M : Any camera with a standard threaded socket for fastening to a tripod can be affixed to this monopod, so you can most likely use your SONY with this. There is nothing else required to use this monopod, but for more flexibility of use, I've attached a midrange tripod ball head to it, and use quick-release mounts which remain affixed to my cameras.DR. N : I use the monopod with both my Nikon D7100 and CoolPix at times when I don't need - or want - to set up a tripod.DALE Z : Should work fine with your Sony digital just as it is. I use mine with a Nikon D7000. I did add a Manfrotto quick-release monopod head but it is not necessary. My monopod has performed as expected for several years and I would highly recommend it.
Shopper : Did it last?MORRIS T : The 679B is a sturdy piece of equipment. I am NOT sorry I made the purchase...I think you'd like it. Only had it for two/three months. Shop around for ball heads. I needed something that would support my 400m lens plus a TC (1.4 or 2x). Again, It's an excellent choice. Hope this will help you.SCOTT B : I only had it a few months and it is holding up very well. I shoot high school football games every week and it works great! I'm very happy with it.MARGARET D : Yes. I can't say I've used it heavily, but it's pretty sturdy.BRIAN K : It has held up very well. Very well built, but what can I say " it's a Manfrotto". Very good buy!MICHAEL B : absolutely sturdy, yes, and yet not too heavy.it locks quickly and the height is ALMOST high enouph for my 6' frame. ALSO, i use it to elevate the camera for overhead shots,, and even more often,,, i keep it attached to the camera for another function,,, i'm getting older and " hand holding " is not giving me the sharp results i used to get,, so i use it as a stabilizing weight beneath the camera ,,, "works" ONE recommendation: buy a ball-head for it so that flipping the camera horz/vert is fast and easy.. Quality impecable..... mikeBARBARA U : My monopod has held up through a lot of terrain! Plus, I've used it as a hiking pole! I would recommend it.DOUGLAS J : I've used this at the EAA Oshkosh Wisconsin week long airshow walking around all day on cement, blacktop, grass, gravel, etc. etc walked around other air shows as well and other all day events. It's still going strong. It's a keeper!JENNIFER J : I love this Monopod, I take it with me all of the time...It has been one of my most used items. I use it with a Sony A900 (which is a heavy camera even without the weight of a lens) and a Sony A100...it is strong and sturdy and has never failed me...I would recommend it to anyone...great for use when you need just a little extra stability. Priced as a bargain in my opinion... Jennifer...RUDY M : Yes, it works fine...I used it a lot at the Osh Kosh Airshow everyday for 10 days with no problems. It is well built and very sturdy...I had my new Canon 400mm zoom lense with my Canon EOS digital SLR camera...the zoom lense weighs 11 lbs. plus the camera. The mono pod held the weight nicely with no problem. I would recommend it to a friend.DIANA H : It has held up very well. I don't hike with it but carry it around the farm to steady the camera and my hands. Easily set up. have fun.GREG V : We have found this monopod to be a very high quality product. I would highly recommend it. The only issue we have had with it is with the rubber piece on the head coming unstuck. We simply glued 2 of the corners down and problem solved. We have been using it heavily in our business for around 2 years now and it is as good as the day it arrived. Very lightweight and versatile. We never do a shoot without it.BRUCE J : So fa so good. Took it on a trip to Alaska in late August/early September with no problems.DR. JOHN H. C : So far, so good. I've only had it a few months, but it works great and I've had no problems with it whatsoever. I find it very convenient for steadying when I don't really need a tripod but need some additional steadying (e.g. many macro shots). Hope this helps.HSIANGCHEN W : I have used it 4 times and I know it is too short to really state anything for sure. But based on the look and feel of it, it is very sturdy.CHERYL C : have brought this travelling and to several weddings. i don't use it as a walking stick, but it's fantastic for my cameraPETER V : Absolutely. It's been great. I know there are lighter monopods out there, but this meets my needs entirely. It is NOT heavy (just heavier than carbon fiber models) and is very sturdy. I own several products from Manfrotto and if I needed another one, I'd come right back to it. I think it's terrific.
Shopper : I'm trying to decide what to get. Why did you pick this one?STEVE C : Number one was the Manfrotto name. You can trust Manfrotto for quality. Also the height seemed to be just right and as it turned out it is perfect. I have a fairly heavy Nikon and often use telephoto lenses that add to the weight. This monopod can handle it and that means that I don't have to worry about damage to my equipment. This monopod is a great investment.LEO DELA C : I decided to purchase the Manfrotto 679B because of the great price and features you get. I'm an amateur photographer, primarily shooting family and my kids sporting events. I was in the market for an economical monopod and didn't require the smallest and lightest one around and this definitely meet my needs. The 679B, coupled with the Manfrotto 496 ballhead, is the perfect set-up for my Canon 50D & 70-200 f2.8 lens.KEITH S : Hi. I chose this item because of several desirable features. Manfrotto is a quality product, the cost is reasonable, the product is very sturdy, well made and relatively light and easily transportable, and it features easy attachment / detachment to a camera. It is also very useful for those times when you do not wish or need to carry a larger heavier tripod, such as hiking trips. Thank you for your question. Keith, Mesa, AZ.LEE H : The Manfrotto brand is well respected and this was a very good price. For my Nikon D300, it is more then sufficient. Good luck!BROOKS N : Other reviwers at the time of my purchase had stated it was sturdy and durable. Those characterietics were important to me. The reviewers were correct. I have the monopod and the 056 Camera Head that mounts on top of the monopod. The Camera Head is a huge help in extracting the most stability out of the monopod. The Camera Head makesthe monopod much more flexible in that the angle of the camera with the horizon can be controlled with the Camera Head. BTW, I find that I gain about two shutter speed stops (e.g., 1/60 - 1/250) by using the monopod with the Camera Head over coparable hand-held conditions. I believe the pod's stability and durability are largely due to the "latches". They are a good design and they can really lock the extentions and stay put!. I chose black because it is "low key" and does not stand out.RICHARD H : Picked the 679B because it's a lightweight but well made monopod. The sections are easy to deploy and adjust.ROBERT G : I've been using Manfrotto tripods and tripod mounts for small, medium and large format cameras for 30 yrs- they are very well engineered, very sturdy inexpensive. I'm happy with the 3 section monopod with quick-release head (but you have to be very careful with quick-release heads to avoid a catastrophic camera-destroying "release" when you don't want it). But if the long length is inconvenient for you, I'd recommend getting the 4 section version.THERON M : I bought this because it was heavy duty and I like only having to adjust two sections instead of three.TERESA S : The name, the price, the features were what I needed to support a camera when a tripod was not allowed. Coupled with a bungie cord or two I was able to take night photos and photos inside buildings that did not allow a flash. A good purchase for me.STEPHEN M : I liked the combination of size when collapsed and what I thought would be greater sturdiness than other monopods I was considering. It's a bit heavier and more robust than other models but I have torture tested it with several long hikes over rugged terrain in Death Valley where I used it as a walking stick 95% of the time and a camera support the rest of the time. It performed well in both capacities. About my only concern is that after 30-40 miles of hiking on gravel and sharp rocky trails the rubber cap on the bottom of the leg is wearing a bit. In short, I really like this monopod.PATREECE D : I picked the Manfrotto 679B Tripod because first of all, Manfrotto is one of if not the best photography equipment manufacturer. The Manfrotto is made of carbon, making it extremely strong, yet it is still extremely lightweight for carrying over your arm with your camera while transporting it or hiking. (It's even easier to transport if you get the matching carrying case.) I also liked the camera attachment, which is strong enough to hold my Canon Rebel with my 200mm zoom lens. If you buy a quick release for the Manfrotto tripod it works quickly and easily. The legs of the tripod are also made to be convenient for adjustments as they have three sections, not including the center leg which is also adjustable, to adjust to your height or other photography needs, and the quick release of the legs' levers makes it super quick to level it out if you are on uneven terrain. Overall, this is a great tripod for amateur and professional photographers. I highly recommend it. This will last a lifetime and is worth the reasonable price for the quality equipment you are getting. Hope this helps!WILLIAM H : I have owned one for over 30 yrs. & a photographer friend asked me to order one for him when I made my next order from Adorama. Best "bang for buck" and fairly indestructable too.TOM L : It was recommended through a website I read. It's easy to take out on hikes for photos - I just wanted stability and something light. It's also very well made. I move around a lot when I take photos and taking a tripod is too much. I'd buy this again - its a professional product ad a great price.

Metal is better some times.....

I used a carbon monopod to shoot semipro football from the sidelines. I was run over and had to shoot the carbon monopod, it received a broken leg in the collision. It's heaver but I hope it can take a lick and keep on ticking.... So far haven't been run over so far.

Excellent tool

I use mine with a Manfrotto quick release. Heavy enough to act like a stabilizer when moving about. Great for getting overhead shots.

Solid and easily adjusted

This monopod is very useful when shooting wildlife or sports events, where a quick setup, adjustment, and fast relocation is necessary. It works great with heavy telephoto lenses, like a Nikon 28-300mm. It maybe a little heavy, but it is built well and the leg clamps are strong. I like to use it in conjunction with Manfrotto tripods withs a different head with quick releases.

Manfrotto 679B Monopod

Got this monopod to replace earlier version which unfortunately got damaged after almost 15 years of great service. While I am pretty good when shooting at slower speeds, having a support such as this monopod is a definite plus, even with vibration-reduction lenses. When working with longer focal lengths, it is a MUST. I'm happy to say that the new version of this monopod is as well built as the original and has some great additions (especially the rubber grip, extra large mounting base and improved locking clamps.) Will be using this with my D300 and D600, especially when using my Tamron 200-500mm tele and my Nikkor 70-300mm VR zoom lenses. What I love about it is that while it is extremely strong, it is light weight and compact. This a great piece of equipment to have when you need some extra support and don't have the time to set up a tripod. I have quick releases for the cameras and lenses so I can be ready to go very quickly. It also doubles as a neat walking stick when hiking. All in all, a "must have" for any serious photographer.

Love the monopod.

I find it ideal in situations where a tripod is too conspicuous or bulky--videotaping child's piano recital or school production. Great on the sidelines with a telephoto.

The mono pod is great. It is easy to use and locks fast and securely - much better than the twist type locks.

Solid, convenient, excellent quality

Excellent built, easy to operate. Manfrotto quality throughout. It can be used on its own with the camera, without the head. However, it is on the heavy side.

Highly Functional

Travelling to Washington DC and they hate tripods there. So I opted for this monopod, and it worked perfectly. Even with a 7D and a 80-400mm zoom, it was quite stable and worked well. Easy to maneuver through crowds, and quick to set-up, very unobtrusive. It was win-win for me.

Solid performer

This is a solid, if a bit heavy, monopod. I have used it with my D90 for movies of my grandchildren, with an attached 50mm f1.8 lens. Solid, good results. I would not recommend it for travel - we are minimalists when we travel, carryons only, and this is just too heavy.

B-M Tri-Section Monopod

My passion is outdoor photography and, unless toting a full-sized tripod, my monopod comes with me. In fact I generally leave it in my car "just in case." I have exposed this monopod to some very inclement weather and rough use and all that I generally do is wipe it down with a cloth silicone wipe after such exposure. Great product to have...also makes a good walking stick when not being used for intended purpose.

This is a life saver, a beauty to use.

This was my alternative to a heavy tripod carrying a heavy lens when out there in the wild. It works great and in case of need, it can double as a stick to keep wildlife from attacking you, e.g., coyotes, wild cats, mountain lions, etc.

Great monopod

Not much to say. It is a great monopod for the money, and does its job very well. Clamps are strong, I often find myself propping my weight on it for support and it has no problems holding me. It's relatively compact and light, and the overall construction seems great. Finish is maybe a little delicate to scratches, but nothing major. Very good product from a very good company.

Solid high value monopod!

By CAP

I bought the Bogen-Manfrotto BG-679B to replace my Giottos MM-9780 5-section aluminum monopod. Not the Giottos wasn't a bad monopod, but it was just big and heavy with very thick tubing. It was very strong and sturdy but it was a chore to lug it everywhere. So I got the 679B. It is a bit lighter and I like the cam-clamps as opposed to the twist clamps, 2 less sections to deal with which is quicker to deploy and adjust and it has a more slender grip. I seem to have lost nothing in stability wh...

What you pay is what you get - FALSE!

By Gerry M.

I use the 679B to support my 300mm F2.8 lens. I don't think I will notice the weight difference if I bought a carbon fiber monopod. This is my 2nd 679B, the locking lever on my first one broke but it was my fault, I overtightened the nut. Rather than buying a replacement locking lever I bought a whole new monopod because of the inexpensive price of a new one. I will eventually buy the replacement part and have that as a backup.
