This tripod rocks! Solidly constructed, easily positioned using the 3-way pan and tilt head. Just go ahead and buy it; you won’t be sorry!

This tripod has a great height without using the center post. Materials and construction are good. Ball head works well. No problems to report after two weeks of use other than a loose set screw for the ball head.

So far I like the tripod. Pretty solid base. I was a bit disappointed when I discovered the ball head doesn't pan. I like to shoot pano. I added the feisol p-70 panning base and all is well except for a little added weight and expense. This is not a travel tripod, but for a serious hobbyist I think it will work out great.

I've owned this tripod for 7 months and have used it outdoors on 3 occasions, including carrying it over a mile at a national park. This tripod is very sturdy, and the pan & tilt head get me to almost all imaginable angels. The only downside is it's quite a bit heavier than a ball head. If saving weight is your game, you can buy the newer version (lighter) also from Manfrotto and with ball head, i believe it saves over half a pound over this tripod.

Definitely worth the price. This is the second one we've bought, so that says something.

This is a decent tripod for the money. The ball head takes some getting used to. Seems unstable. Perhaps I just need to get used to it.

I can only compare this to my existing Gitzo GT0932 basalt travel tripod which, while nice, is not particularly solid. That said, this Manfrotto is nice and solid, easy to set up, and everything works as you'd expect, with a quality feel throughout. The ball head isn't particularly fancy, and probably isn't quite up to my existing Kirk ball head, but is smaller and lighter (which is fine - I'm shooting m43 cameras) and also shares the same quick-release plate as my Manfrotto video head. The carrying bag is also decent quality.

Very happy with this tripod. Very light, but strong.
The Manfrotto 290 Xtra Carbon is the perfect combination of extra-rigidity and lightness: this is the first extra-sturdy carbon tripod dedicated to hobbyist photographers.
The 290 Xtra Carbon is a 3-section tripod, the biggest in the 290 range, with carbon composite leg tubes which increase the tripod's rigidity and stability, enabling it to easily support heavy equipment. The top casting is made of magnesium, as are the adjustable leg locking levers which can be tightened to counteract any effects of aging and wear. This tripod's key feature is in its choice of four leg angle positions which maximize shooting creativity. Its rapid center column adds flexibility and extends the min-max height range.
The 290 Xtra Carbon comes in a kit with a center ball head specifically designed for compactness and transportability. Its broad, spherical movement together with its quick release plate mechanism enable rapid, easy framing. The head carrying the 200 PL plate is fully made of aluminum and features friction control to help photographers make the finest adjustments to their compositions even with heavy equipment.
