Questions & Answers

LEON K : Can this be used to achieve No Parallax points on my Nikon Z6 and lens's for multi-row Panoramas?MARK R : That is not anything I tried or have experience with. The head is micro adjustable and gives very precise control of the head. You can quickly get it close, then use the knobs to dial it in. I hope this helps.DALE F : I'd be suspicious. I have the Manfrotto XPRO but never tried it with a nodal slide rail. The problem is that the tilt/pan head camera attachment screw is displaced about 1-1/4 inches off center of rotation in two horizontal axes (sideways and front/back). That may not matter for large-scale scenery shots but might be touchy for closer range. The head's micrometer screw adjustments in three axes are really nice for general work requiring minute adjustments.
MATEO SERNA Z : Can it support a 4x5 camera?RICHARD W : My bet is not. The specifications provide information on the maximum weight this Tripod head will support. I use it with Nikon's new P1000 which is a pretty large and heavy camera. The tripod head does great, even mounted on a lightweight, $30 aluminum tripod. I do not know how your 4x5 camera compares weight wise to my P1000PAHO M : I wouldn’t suggest it. It is not that heavy dutyKevin B : This head is offset from the center axis of the tripod. It perfect for my xpro2 and maybe a small dslr without a long lens. I think the rating is 12lbs, but that is pushing it. I would not recommend this head for medium or large format cameras.DALE F : Probably depends on the weight of your 4x5. It's rated at 8.8 lbs. I use a Nikon D800 with 80-400mm zoom lens, combined weight of about 5-1/2 lbs. with reasonable stability. Other than that, I can't say.JAMES T : I shoot with a Lumix GH4, so no idea if it would support a 4x5.TODD M : I have not tried a larger format camera. It is solid base for my Nikon D5600 with a telephoto lens. I do like the bubble levels and the large fine turning knobs.ANDREW R : I wouldn't advise it. Max capacity is only 8.8 pounds.
THOMAS L : Does it have a removable camera plate?Curt L : Yes - comes with a Manfrotto style plateBenny W : Yes, it is the standard Monfroto camera plate.GERALD B : When I visited New York in August, I rented both the 410 and 405 - (all metal) Manfrotto geared heads. I first tried the 410 model (2.7 lb). That is the one I planned to purchase. I arrived at my shoot and I could not unlock the plate to screw on the camera. The previous renter probably dropped it. The button to unlock (attached to the locking arm) was broke off. I could not even use a pen to press it. I had to leave my shoot and get an the 405 model (3.53 lb). The plate on the 410 and 405 is larger than normal. The locking mechanism was not so smooth. I like to fit everything in a large backpack. The XPRO is better if you want something smaller and weights less. The 410 is probably more durable if you are going to be rough with the gear. However, there are breakable parts on all of them. After using all three. I am happier with the XPRO. Weigh comparison: XPRO 1.7 lb 410 2.7 lb 405 3.53 lbGERALD B : Yes. It's the standard size small plate that fits on most of other Manfrotto heads. 2" x 1.5" at the top that touches the camera. I do like this head very much. It's lighter and smaller than the other geared models. Also, it's more solid than some of the reviews may lead you to believe. The gears are metal but some other parts are hard plastic. Consider a case or protective wrap. Treat it like a lens. Don't drop it. For a full frame SLR, with a wide tilt shift lens, it's very solid. The smaller size and lighter weight is a good thing.JAMES T : Yes, it does.GERARD J : Yes, it does. You can see the lever that holds the plate in place in the photo on the page. The lever is on the upper left hand side. I believe the screw is the conventional 1/4-inch. You'll enjoy this product.

An Amazing Gear Head!

Manfrotto is the best! Great value for the money. I have their light stands, tripods, monopods, and gear head. This gear head is really easy to adjust and it stays were you put it. It's well made and solid.

How did I shoot products without this?

After shooting product photos on a Manfrotto ball head for many years, the past month of shooting with this 3 gear head has really made me wonder how I'd went so long without it. Small tilt adjustment when shooting products in a studio environment with a ball head was often times a test of patience, or luck of the tightened bolt, and never perfect. Now, with a few tiny cranks I can lock in everything perfectly straight in a matter of about a minute and a couple reference shots. Even the stylist noticed and commented on how much quicker and efficient this part of our setup was. For anyone doing any type of photography where fine-tuning of your tilt/angle is imperative then as silly as it sounds this easily will become the new piece of gear that you're most excited about.

Good for the price, needs to be a bit more stought.

I really like the unit other than it isn't super stiff. I would like to have it flex less. Also would like to have a arca-swiss plate or at least a good adapter since there are way more options on the arca-swiss platform. I use this for architectural photography

Great Head, Quality Feel

I moved from a ball head to this one, and I couldn't be happier! The build quality is great. Nice and heavy but not overdone. Operation is smooth and precise. It's exactly what I was looking for!

Good for the money

Its my first real experience with a geared head but it does exactly as I would expect. Built solidly - not metal but rather some composite material. Operates smoothly and overall is a good calue for the money...

Modern look, technical excellence

It has been while since I have upgraded my three-way ball head but since adding a Tamron 150-600mm to my quiver, I wanted something that would be good for full moons and other static shots that would allow for precision framing. This geared version is excellent. Great value for the money.

Exceeds expectations

The problem I was facing was that using ball heads etc always needed some correction. For some of my pictures, I needed precise camera positioning (such as product photography). Yes, I could adjust pictures in whatever software, but I try to get the shot right in the first instance. This is the tool to get. I then used the head with my Nikkor 500mm/f8 lens. The trouble is that it is a mirrored lens and fairly light, hence prone to blurry pictures because of camera movement. Using the Manfrotto head on a Tripod, I could quickly adjust height etc. and had perfect level pictures of moving subjects. I am very pleased and can highly recommend it.

GREAT PAN/TILT TRIPOD HEAD

I have purchased several Manfrotto products over the years and found them all to be great! So, when I saw the XPRO Geared 3-Way Pan/Tilt tripod head, it was a no brainer. I have used it several times during the last few weeks to shoot some macros. The knobs make it easy to compose. Just a little twist does the job. A great product and easy to use. And a word about Adorama. They are a GREAT company to do business with. Always courteous sales and tech people. Prompt deliveries. Can't ask for much more.

Much better control than ball head

I have a Manfrotto XPRO ball head which is very easy to use but lacks precision control. I used it to shoot moon pictures and it was very difficult to frame the moon in the center of the view screen, especially with a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L plus a 1.4X converter on EOS 6D. With the three-way head, I can easily frame the moon with a Sigma 150-600mm C on EOS 7D Mark II. The quick release handles allow me to do coarse adjustment and the knobs allow me to do fine adjustment. I don't think I am going back to the ball head.

Useless

I wanted to like this. I have a 3 other heads that use the same baseplate and didn't want to switch baseplates every time I go to my gear head. I have been using the 410 for a while and figured it would be similar. It's useless. I mounted a D810, with a battery grip and a 24-70. This is well within the weight specs of the head but it bobbled and giggled around like crazy. The slightest tap to the tripod sent the head vibrating. Don't waste your money. The Manfrotto 410 has been great to me, it's just a pain to swap plates.

Super tripod head at afordable price.

I purchased my Monfroto 290 tripod with a804RC2 pan head a few years ago. As I began improving my photography skills ad took courses at the local Community College, I found time was wasted setting up my tripod and sometimes missed a good photograph due to the problem. I enhanced that by purchasing a #438 leveling head to eliminate some of the frustrating juggling of tripod leg length to get the head leveled. Since I like city/landscape and real estate photography, a level camera is essential. Therefore, I purchased the MHXPRO-3WG geared head to enable ease of micro-adjustment of the camera position once the base head was level. This has helped get the tripod and camera adjustments done much quicker and more accurately for this specialized type of photography.
