This is one of the few HDMI to SDI converters out there that has HDMI 2.0 support and can convert video signals up to 4K (Ultra HD) resolutions at 50 or 60fps. It is also capable of upscaling 720p or 1080p footage up to 2160p output (depending on the settings).

Full-sized (locking) XLR connectors for embedding up to 2 channels of analog audio or 4 channels of AES digital audio are also a welcome step up from other converters (which typically have 1/4" TRS or RCA connectors). It can also embed timecode in the SDI output signal (converting from LTC to SDI embedded ancillary timecode).

The optional smart panel, which replaces the plain front panel adding a small screen and some control buttons, is a great accessory. This allows to monitor the input signal (including the detected resolution and frame rate) and to change the audio embedding and upscaling settings.

There are a couple of downsides compared to Blackmagic's other converters (and HDMI to SDI converters from other manufacturers). One is that the unit is significantly larger in size than the Mini Converters. The other downside for some applications is that it includes an internal fan, so it is not totally silent (although the latest firmware update does reduce the fan speed and noise somewhat).
