The construction of this unit is not robust. It is designed for casual use, not professional activities. However, given the cost, that is as expected. Be careful installing the ring light on your camera. The ring light has a metal ring with sharp points. Turning it by hand can be difficult. Also, the lens adapters can separate from the ring light when it is removed. The adapters have a smooth outer surface; therefore, removing them by hand is not easy. A filter wrench will work if you first place a rubber band around the adapter. I installed the ring light on my Nikon D800. The TTL metering worked well. I had no problems using the preview function.

On the plus side, this unit does everything it's supposed to, it provides good lighting for macro photography. It was easy to set up and use. However, it does not play nice with my D90. My comments here may not apply to any other model of Nikon DSLR, they may well be specific to the D90. But what I have experienced is that all is well if you never press the preview button on the camera while the strobe is turned on. If you do, you get the preview but then the camera locks up and you have to turn off the camera and turn it back on again to unlock it. This is pretty awkward but not bad enough to make me want to return it; I do get the pictures even though it takes me a bit longer than I'd like. I haven't yet tried turning the strobe off before pressing the preview button, I just thought of that while writing this. Don't know whether that would be better (or even work) or not.

I use the flash to take pictures of the jewelry my wife and I make, it gives a good even light. I have not had any problems with it, but have not had it long. Yes it's inexpensively built, but it didn't cost $500 as some ring flashes do.It could stand a better screw to attach it to the lens so becareful not to cross thread it.

As a crime sene technician, I do all sorts of photography, and macro photography is part of that. I have only had one chance to use it at work, and it seemed to fit my needs. The only thing is if you are using it on a D-50 or a D-5000 you have to remember to turn of the built in flash. I will probably buy a second unitfor the house as well, and it comes with most of the popular sized adaptor, so before you buy extra adapter rings, take the unit home and see what you need.
