In the time that it took us to achieve the X4 ND's unparalleled color neutrality we also took our hand at redesigning the filter frame from the ground up. Worlds Sharpest ND Filter. 100% Guaranteed The X4 ND features SCHOTT Superwhite B270 optical glass, which is an ultra clear crown glass. It is produced by melting high purity raw materials and then made using the continuous draw process. The result is excellent transmission in the ultraviolet, visible and infrared spectrums and a high surface quality that accepts our state-of-the-art MRC and nanotec coatings exceptionally well. MRC16 Our state-of-the-art multi-resistant coating (MRC) is an optical coating applied to both surfaces of the glass disk to reduce reflection and to increase surface durability. Our proprietary MRC coating is structurally harder than the glass itself and the reduced reflections improve the efficiency since less light is lost. The reduction of reflections also improves the contrast of the image by elimination of stray light. The real world result  Better contrast and color. How does poor quality MRC affect image quality  Low light transmission and green flaring are common problems with uncoated glass. As MRC coatings are added to each side of the optical disk light transmission steadily increases with flaring steadily decreasing. In our lab tests light transmission apexes at about 16-layers of MRC and slowly decreasing in transmission at 18 and above. 8-layers of MRC are applied evenly to both sides of each optical disk resulting in MRC16. The higher the ND factor the more pronounced the color cast. To achieve the most color neutral ND performance we had to develop an alternative manufacturing method to the conventional oven process. Transmission Curve Spectrometers are optical instruments that can detect spectral lines and measure their wavelength or intensity. Spectrometers can also be used to test the efficiency of an optical filter in order to determine whether a filter has properly blocked or transmitted specific wavelengths. A perfectly flat transmission curve would yield a perfectly color neutral result. And while there is no such thing as a perfectly neutral ND filter (contrary to a filter manufacturers claim) the X4 ND is the most color neutral and has the flattest transmission curve of any ND filter, guaranteed. Neutral density filters manufactured using the traditional method also have strong transmission in the infrared wavelength starting at 700nm, whereas the X4 ND maintains a very well controlled and flat transmission all the way throughout the visible spectrum and into IR. A breakthrough design with traction During the period of time that it took us to achieve the best color profile performance we also redesigned the filter frame from ground up. Constructed of high quality brass CNC machined with our signature traction frame, the X4 ND is easier than ever to attach and remove securely, even with gloves on in cold conditions. We specifically designed the X4 ND be a workhorse ND filter for field work, built to withstand extreme wind, salt water, dust and other abrasive conditions and elements and we guarantee each X4 ND to perform with optimal clarity and color neutrality for 25 years even in the harshest of conditions.

This ND filter is perfectly neutral with no discernible color cast, just as advertised. Image quality is not impacted. It is well built and screws onto and off of the lens easily. When stacked on top of the Breakthrough UV/protection filter there is no vignette at 24mm on my Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L lens. The lens cap and lens hood fit without interference. This 6-stop filter is just a tad more than six stops requiring a +1/3-stop adjustment to exactly match the exposure without the filter. Overall, a very impressive piece of gear.

Breakthrough makes the best Optical filter glass on the planet.  As a professional photographer, I need edge to edge sharpness that doesnt fall off or distort, or refract in odd ways that cheaper filters do.  For long exposures - this is my go to filter of Choice,
Like:  Highest quality in a thin filter.

Great filter. Well built and with brass threads very easy to install and remove. No color fringing or distortion as far as I can tell. Packaging and case is pretty basic, but that?s my only minor complaint.

Have only used this bad boy once so far, but it was AWESOME. Also, incredibly easy to thread on and off. No perceptible color shift really at all. Definitely worth the price tag.

Excellent choice

This is my first breakthrough filter I have purchased. I purchased it because of the good reviews. I have only used it a couple of times and it did not disappoint. My favorite feature of this filter is the wide band that has a very deep rib around it that makes it ever so easy to take off the camera. I will continue to purchase these filters for their quality and ease of removal. Thank you Breakthrough.

Quality lens and easy to remove

Best and most color neutral filters on the market. Easy to grip to install and remove too. The Schott glass of the X4s compliment the finest glass of our lenses with zero degradation

Can't recommend this enough! Great product with little to no effect on color and nice brass finish! Definitely worth every bit of its pricetag!

Best filters in the game!

Appears to be well built and the "traction frame" really does make it easier to grip when threading on or off of a lens. I have only used it a couple of times so far, but have not noticed any color cast or had any other performance issues. As I can see no faults at this point I would give it a full five stars.

Quality addition to my kit

Fantastic filters, well worth the price.The results are very rewarding.I find the filters also quite resilient to all sorts of weather such as rain, salt water etc.

Well built filter

I’m a hybrid shooter (pictures/video) and considered these filters for a while. I started with cheap filters as I learned which was ok w/proper WB but some of that color shift always seemed to linger.

I have tried medium priced options as well, and variable ND’s. They are ok, but honestly not a huge jump from just the cheap $30 solid ND set I had started with. 

People say VND is the way to go for video shooters, but it just doesn't make sense as most of the quality VND’s are 2-5 stops, and then 6-9 stops so you wind up switching filters anyways. 

So I opted for top quality solid ND’s in 3/6 stop. This covers most uses, and just bump up ISO a bit at worst. Very happy with color. Saves so much time in post, time is money! On Sony A7iii with 16-35GM no vignette at 16mm. 

Glad I went with this over variable ND’s (which may have their place), but quality wins over trying to avoid a 5 second filter change in my opinion.
