filter is well made and works great but for whatever reason it arrived very dirty straight out of the unopened box. Glass on filter was greasy and had dust and lint on it so I had to spend a few minutes to clean it off. I have purchased B+W filters before and this is the first time it arrived filthy. I bought Hoya and Tiffen and Heliopan filters in the past and they always arrive clean.

The filter is fabulous, giving starkly beautiful greyscale images. But the threads are a fine pitch (0.50 mm) while the only available step-up adapter for my Lumix DMC-LX7 camera is 37mm (fine) threads to 39mm coarse threads (0.75 mm pitch).

For the review B&W refers to film and B+W refers to the filter maker. Confusing, I know. Sorry. For a long time I shot B&W (Neopan 400) without filters. I was always in too much of a hurry and worried more about getting the shot in the field than filters. Especially since, for the most part, my images were scanned and could be adjusted in post-production. But as my skills improved and I needed less time for composing shots, I wanted to do more to get it right in the field. This filter makes for awesome B&W shots in not only the traditional golden hours but also mid-day. It is stronger than a strictly yellow filter and I find the amount of contrast between sky and cloud very pleasing. I keep it on my lenses from just past first light to just before it goes dark. In the early/late hours it makes for superbly stark contrast between buildings, sky, and other features. I am told red filters will do even more contrast and sky darkening. I am rather excited to try it next. B+W makes, arguably, the best filters on the planet. The optics of this single-coated filter are amazing. Very clear and very resilient to build-up of dust and other particles. The filter mounts firmly to the lens and the knurled grip makes for a very easy twisting on and off. I shoot a lot with older Canon FD lenses which are all 52mm so moving between whatever I'm shooting is simple. The filter is well-made and I have no doubt it will last a long time. I haven't noticed and vignetting due to filter-ring thickness even on a 24mm lens. Filter factor is listed as 4 but I haven't noticed a need for that much correction. I may have to move a full-stop, at most. Not something to worry about with TTL metering anyway but if you need a different Tv/Av you'll have to remember to correct. Very happy with this filter. Will order more later for the other lenses and will probably pick up a red one for the dramatic effects as well.

You must use filters that are as optically superior as your lens to get excellent results.
