The neutral gray half of this filter expertly transmits 50% of the incoming light, darkening the respective portion of the subject by one f-stop without altering its colors. This feature is particularly useful when the sky is too bright in relation to the landscape, providing an ideal balance for detailed cloud rendition and preventing over-exposure that can wash out the sky. This filter belongs to the (701M) and (702M) series, supplied in a rotating mount similar to a polarizer, excluding the 4x6 filters. Crafted from optical glass, it boasts a multi-resistant coating (MRC) by B+W. This MRC is not just an extraordinarily effective multiple layer coating, but it's also harder than glass, offering protection against scratches, especially during cleaning. Invaluable filter. I use this constantly for landscape photography. I would have liked a 3-stop or more version.  

One improvement would have been if the filter was marked to show level position. 

I marked mine with a tiny white dot of paint to show the level position.
