Questions & Answers

Adam A : Can you use this filter on a digital camera?STEVE M : Yes, it works quite well and protects the lens.TOM M : Yes, the filter is actually screwed onto the front of your lens. This allows the filter to modify the amount of light which will reach your camera's sensor. Figuring the amount of time for the exposure to achieve your artistic intent is the next step. Adorama's Learning Center can help with this.MICHAEL T : Absolutely!! Works extremely well too!MARK A : Yes. I used it on my digital SLR to take pictures of the sun during the Venus and Mercury transits.GREGG O : Yes of course you can use it on a digital camera. It filters light. Light is light no matter if it is received on a censor or a piece of film as the recording media. The job of an ND filter is to reduce the amount of that light no matter what camera you use it on. I have used it on a Nikon DSLR as well as 35mm, medium format and large format film cameras.TERRY B : Yup. There can be challenges using 10 stop filters. Best to compose and focus with filter off, turn off AF then attach filter. I have found live view can see through filter to check composition focus is difficult with filter attached. There are several great ND apps for calculating exposure times when using 10 stop or stacked filters.
Shopper : Can you add the B&W ND 3.0 110 77mm filter to the Vari N Duo ND Filter from Singh Ray Thin Mount?JONATHAN S : I would imagine you could assuming the threading matches, which in all likely hood they do.TERRY B : You could attach the Singh Ray to the B+W. The challenge will to calculating the exact amount of ND being provided. The effect is additive so if the variable is set at 5 stops adding 10 stops will make it 15 or 1/32000 of the light passing through. Hoping for a solar eclipse? Some vignetting may occur as well from the thickness of the combined filters.
Shopper : Can you add a polarizer filter to the B&W ND 3.0 110 77 mm filter?YUAN Y : Yes, you can. You will need to use polarize filter first, then add ND filter. You will need to remember to position of your polarize filter, because when you add ND filter, might change the position of polarize filter.DICK B : Have not attempted to add these 2 filters together and would really not do so. The combination of the 2 would not help your image quality. Each filter is meant for a specific purpose and I think adding them together would not do your images any good. Remember this is my opinion.STEVEN D : The short answer is yes. On a wide angle you may get vignetting.CHARLES K : Yes, filters can be added, or "stacked", over other filters.DENNIS R : Yes. I have a B+W 77mm on a Tokina 12-24 f4 lens10-stop and 3-stop stack. On top of these stack, I have a Hoya polarizer. They're compatible. Only downside with more than 2 filters on the lens is the physical vignette when you go very wide (12-14mm on my Tokina lens.JIFANG Z : Yes, you can add a polarizer filter to the ND filter. But, you have to adjust the polarizer filter before you put on the ND filter. Once you have the 3.0 ND filter on, you really cannot see anything through the viwerfinder. If you stack these two filters on a wild angle lens, you expect to see vignette on your images.JEREMY T : Yes, as long as it has the same size threads (i.e. 77mm) TERRY B : You can use the polarizer with the the 3.0. Trick is to compose, focus, and adjust with the 10 stop off. Switch to Manual focus and calculate your 10 stop exposure and dial in. Carefully attach the the 10 stop taking care not to move the polarizer. I use ND Calculator APP for calculations. Recently found trick that Live View will actually show field of view so you recompose without filter removal. Enjoy!

Expensive but worth it.

B+W filters are expensive but I find they are worth it compared to cheaper brands. They're glass filters and have brass filter rings.

Functional filter

I've only used it once so far. I was taking morning photos of the cherry blossoms in DC. Allowed me to get some cloud blur in the sky and smooth the water - and it enhanced the reflections of trees and monuments in the water. It definitely did give my images a slight color cast although it was easily removed in Lightroom

Helps Create Long Exposures for Silky Water & Clouds

Only captured less than 10 images with the filter so far, but what I see is great.

Just as described.

Wonderful filter. Came in perfect condition while some filters I have bought from other brands came slightly scratched. This filter does what it claims and does not product any additional glare for me. I enjoy mine.

B+W color cast towards magenta

I purchased the 1.8 and the 3.0. In the case of the 1.8, the color cast is mild. For the 3.0 it's stronger. In both cases, I can correct them in post. Would I buy them again? Possibly. If I knew of cheap filters without color cast I would go for those, but usually the expensive filters has no color cast. In fact, my camera can adjust WB and give you the option to reduce magenta. I will someday do the exercise to determine the right settings in camera (for each filter) to get the colors right when shooting, but for know, I'm correcting it in post.

Quality Filter

Fits as expected, changes the exposure as advertised, does not distort the image or interfere with auto focus. All-around quality filter.

Awesome Effect & Quality Build

I purchased the B+W ND filter primarily to slow down the shutter speed while shooting moving water in bright sunlight. It achieves the desired effect without having to remove the filter to focus, unlike denser ND filters require. This helps capture images quickly when you want to selectively focus on multiple points in your composition if you plan on blending images in post. B+W filters are my preferred choice because not only because of the price point, but also because of the precise manufacturing process used in all their glass. I have found no denigration of the captured image by putting their filters in front of an expensive lens, as is the case with many less expensive filters. I highly recommend this filter if you need to decrease your exposure speed in order to get a milky, ethereal effect on landscapes that have moving water or combine it with the polarizing filter to decrease your shutter speed even more.

Nice quality, no regrets

I have been using a variable ND filter in an effort to carry fewer accessories and use a one-size-fits all solution, but I hated the quality, reflections, thread issues, and "x" images. There is no substitute for a quality piece of equipment like this 8X multicoated ND filter. It threads smoothly onto both my 52mm lenses, and onto a Breakthrough Photography 46mm to 52mm adapter. Great image/color quality. While I didn't want to spend the money for this filter, I don't regret the purchase. What I regret is spending the money on the variable ND filter, which I should have put toward this purchase in the first place.

Excellent quality

Excellent quality, color and durability. Great for images, but important if you’re doing video. Variable NDs lack the quality that these static ND filters have. If image quality is important to you, you will not be disappointed.

Excellent quality ND filter.

I love this ND filter. The build is very durable and robust. Does not drastically change color to your image like a number of yours they filters on the market. This is very important to me and why I choose to use B+W products.

B+W is worth the money

I've gone 100% B+W for all of my filter needs. They generally cost a little extra but the consistency and durability of the products is worth it. Cross threading is not an issue with these products when attaching to your lens; the rings are metal housing is as high quality as the glass.

Returned merchandise

Adorama is a company built on great products and a great reputation. This time I made a mistake when ordering filters for a Phantom drone. As their return policy states, "30 day return policy, no questions asked." Adorama has excellent customer service and that is why I bought a Panasonic GH5 kit from them last year. I will be back! 3 stop reduction in light w/ no color cast

Awesome product as always! B+W rocks!

By LEROY H.

I purchased this 6 stop ND to start working with long exposures. I have the 1, 2, & 3 stop NDs already. Most are B+W but one is a heliopan but I forget which ND. I also use the Kaismen version of B+W CPL and it is world class. I will eventually purchase the 10 stop ND for a complete collection. Since I use all 77mm FX lenses with my DX D7000 APS-C sensor camera I can stack a few filters on rare occasion if I want and not worry about lens vinette. Some of you are wondering why I dont just get...

The B + W 77mm 110 Solid Neutral Density 3.0 Filter has several uses and offers the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. They have no effect on color balance. Neutral Density filters enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. Neutral density filters are available in 1, 2, 3, or 4 stops to suit individual situations.

Neutral Density filters permit you to create unique effects. When using high speed film in bright light, an ND filter will allow you to blur motion such as speeding cars or moving water. This permits adjustments in aperture and exposure that would normally not be possible without the filter. Determining which neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Speaking generally, the 2-stop value (ND 0.6) effectively compensates average situations.

The reputation of B+W's Schott glass is world renowned. The high production standards combined with a sturdy brass filter ring make B+W filters hard to beat. These filters have a "heft" to them that is impressive. They may feel heavier but the benefit is in the construction and results. Not only is the glass exceptional but so is the seal between the ring and glass. Schott Glass used in the manufacture of this filter is legendary andsynonymous with the highest standards of filter production.

This mount is B+Ws F-Pro mount which represents a revolution in filter mounts. The mount is thinner than previous mounts which means they can be used with wider angle lenses including most 24mm lenses on a full-frame body without fear of vignetting (dark corners on the frame). Another improvement is that the glass is no longer held in place with a front retaining ring but rather from the back.

This innovation eliminates the possibility of a hood or second filter that has been screwed in excessively tight from damaging the retaining ring. The filter ring itself is made from brass yielding a stronger product. Brass filter rings are also less prone to jamming. In addition, the seal between the glass and filter ring is exceptionally strong giving the filter added strength and durability. The Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) is harder than traditional B+W glass. This helps prevent scratches as well as being water and dirt repellent.

In production, the filter glass is dropped into the empty filter ring from the rear and held in place with a threaded retaining ring; this is a definite advantage over a competitor who uses a spring clip to hold the glass in place.

A threaded retaining ring will hold the glass firmly and securely in place to avoid the possibility of rattling and provide perfect parallelity and flatness to your front lens element for ideal optics. The part about additional filters not binding is due to the fact that brass is a very stable metal and does not contract or expand like alloy.

B + W ND Filter Features

  • To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
  • To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
  • To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
  • Neutral Density 3.0 (exposure adjustment = 10 stops, transmits 0.1% of light)
