Review Summary

I use this filter on a rifle scope stacked with a linear polarization lens to cut Emissivity. The Kolari version is better, but, the Kolari adds a green tint to the visual that I find distracting. B+W keeps a much truer image while not clearing the visual clutter quite as well. There are always trade offs. For me the B+W is a better match.

As the title implies, the unit I received was used: the seal on box was already sliced open and a minor scratch on the thread indicates prior use. Otherwise, I could not detect any flaws on the glass.

From the renowned brand B+W, comes the Interference Filter, an innovative solution designed to block unwanted Ultra Violet and Infrared radiation. This 86mm UV/IR Blocking #486M Multi Coated Glass Filter is not just a regular filter; it's a meticulously engineered tool that enhances your photography experience.
Unlike traditional filters that block radiation through absorption, the B+W Filter 486 utilizes a unique interference method. The filter is made from completely colorless glass, which is coated with numerous ultra-thin, partially reflective layers. These layers, with their precisely computed thicknesses akin to MC coating, act as a barrier against UV and IR radiation. The unwanted radiation is repeatedly reflected between these layers, effectively blocking it from reaching your camera sensor.
This filter is particularly beneficial for CCD applications, where digital image sensors may not be equipped with an IR protection filter. Despite its advanced technology, the B+W Filter 486 is user-friendly and requires no increase in exposure. It boasts a filter factor of 1, indicating its efficiency and performance.
The B+W 86mm UV/IR Blocking #486M Multi Coated Glass Filter is a clear choice for photographers seeking to protect their equipment and enhance the quality of their images. It's not just a filter, it's a shield against harmful radiation, ensuring your photography is always at its best.
