Am I looking for a step up or step down ring?STEVE H : Hi Sally , You will need a "stepup" ( stepping up from 40.5 to 52mm ) , but keep in mind that the 40.5mm side is" male" threads since it screws into to the lens and the 52mm is "female threads" since it recieves. so if your spotting scope adapter has 52mm "male threads" then it should work for you...hope this helps..........SteveSHEILA J : Sally, I bought this step up 40.5mm to 52mm and it works great. It is a quality adapter. I purchased a Olympus pen and bought a UV filter40.5mm. I wanted to use some of my 52mm filters from my Nikon D5100 and this allowed me to do so. I also have an Olympus E-450 that uses 58mm filters that I have several special effects filters for...so, I also bought the step up 52mm to 58mm. I actually screw the two adapters together and can put my 58mm on my 40.5mm. Using these adapters have saved me a fortune not having to buy extra filters for each lens. Good luck!PAUL M : the B+W adapter ring that i purchased was for that same purpose . 52 mm swarovski dca to 40.5mm nikon v1 part RZN 69485HENRY S : My 40.5mm to 52mm ADAORAMA step up adaptor ring works this way... The 40.5mm threads are basically viewed as male and screw into the front of my lens shroud. The 52mm threads are female inside the adaptor ring and receive male 52mm threads that are exposed on another piece of equipment. In this sense I use it to step up my lens to a filter. It's kind of a relative thing step up or step down and really depends on the usage. I do not know about the maleness/femaleness of the various pieces of your equipment I think you should be able to tell if it will work by the above a looking closely at the ADORAMA picture. As most things from B+W are, this is well made. It is a bit pricey, but given the few options available for mounting 52mm on 40.5mm, this was the best choice.
