Questions & Answers

Shopper : Will this work on an APSC camera?
Shopper : I would like to use this 1.4 teleconverter on the 17mm TS lens.  It is not listed as compatible but it seems like I've heard of it being used.  Any experience with this lens?YOU-YEN Y : I am sorry I cannot answer your question because the extender you want use may not fit your lens. If you find it would fit your lens, I would recommend to use it; I attached it to my 100 - 400 mm lens all the time to shoot birds and it works great.
ROBERT B : Will this duplexer 1.4 X support auto focus with the Tamron 28-300 lens on a Canon 6D?AL C : Not if the lens has an aperture over f5.6.LEWIS N : Sorry don't have that lens. But I used it on my canon 100-400 and it does show less resolution. I use a Canon 7D camera.GLENN W : Without having it in my hand, I cannot speak for the use of Tamron with Canon BUT there is nothing otherwise that would prevent the 6D AF from working with this lens while at the shorter end of the focal range. However at the other end, the AF will likely stop working unless you use Live View. The 6D provides AF up to a minimum aperture of f5.6. This lens has a minimum aperture of f6.3 at 300mm. With the extender that becomes f9. Some third party lens manufactures report f5.6 back to the camera so it still may work although AF performance may not be totally accurate. Canon can only be responsible for their own product line so your combination may or may not work. Even so, stretching a medium performance lens out to beyond 300mm is not likely to give you results you will be happy with. You will likely also need a very stable platform with would include a professional tripod and a heavy gimbal head. I would suggest putting the money into a Canon 100-400 series II if possible but even the series I is quite nice and you will not lose your AF functionality. Although plenty of people are content with their third party lenses, they are always happier with the Canon counterpart. My first big lens was a Tamron 300mm/f2.8 . Loved it. But now that I've owned the Canon version I would never go back to a third-party lens. Consider the used market. It's what I do.

Not quite yet

It did not look as white as I was expecting it was a tan white like the older ones. Decent shipping. Have not really got to use it yet but heading out at end of month and will break it in then & leave a much better review. Tanks

Great Addition To My Camera Bag and the Canon 300mm f/4.

A great little extender which has added greatly to the combined focal length of my Canon 300mm f/4 combined with the Canon 7D, crop sensor-camera, for a total of 670mm with minimum aperture of f/5.6! Adds no weight to my camera bag and fits easily into the smallest space. Does not seem to have slowed the electronic focusing down. Tested it on a hike and made a great image of a Blue Heron perched upon a ghost tree. Love it!

Cool item, but not for low-light (limited use)

I bought this about one month ago, and I have only tried it with my old 5D Mark II. I'm not sure how well it works with newer cameras, but from what I saw it was NOT worth the $400 price tag. First of all, it is very limited in terms of which lenses you can pair it with. It is very easy to use, and convenient, BUT only works with certain L lenses. Secondly, as you probably already know, it cuts the max aperture you can use in half, so that REALLY REDUCES the effective speed of your lens, making it NOT a great choice for low light. The sample photso I tried all looked dull and blurry, NOT as sharp as the original lens itself. So maybe it's OK for ideal situations, on a very bright day, outdoors, where you can use low ISO and faster than 1/1000th shutter speed MAYBE this is a good choice, but otherwise I would RATHER just use a APS-C crop sensor to get a nice zoom result.

Extender EF 2x III

Just have Patience when using this lens Extender. Perfect for nature images. Not so involving sports images especially movement. Otherwise, a great lens addition. :-)

Lens Works Great with the 2X extender.

I purchased this several years ago but have just started using it with my 70-200 2.8 lens on the R5. I'm amazed at how well this is working out and will be going to an airshow soon to see what images I can capture with the setup.

2x Canon extensor so far works as expected.

Works as expected. Still testing it out with neighborhood bald eagles. Darker and slightly less sharp than the 1.4x which is to be expected since you lose 2 stops of light with the 2x and only 1 with the 1.4. So far seems to work well with the Canon EF 600 f4 is usm III and the r3. Time with testing will detail for me whether it's a carry in the bag when I have monopod and tripod available. The loss of speed does mean I need some support help no hand holding with this connected.

Meets expectations

Works exactly as expected. No better no worse. You do lose 2 stops of light and a small amount of sharpness but when you need that extra reach to get the photo at all it certainly comes in handy.

No Sacrifice

Not much for 2X but the 1.4 is just a little tick without loosing quality. No problem with big glass/primes but do NOT recommend for 100-400 zoom, misfit.

Why not give it a try

Well was either going to try a X2 converter or buy a new canon 100-400 so for now I went with the converter, so far so good, everything is really good, pictures are still outstanding, I really can not say anything bad about this Len, have never liked using converters before but pretty happy about this purchase

Extender EF 2x III

Extender EF 2x III Is exactly what I needed to extend the range of my EF 300mm f2.8 lens. Auto focus works as it should although at slower response. That delay has impacted by sports photography but not my nature photography. As always, Canon did a great job thought the order process and shipping. I am very satisfied.

Excellent Optics - However, most misunderstand how to use an extender!

The Extender EF 1.4x, the 3rd generation has excellent optics and produces impressive images (So does its 2x sibling. The purpose for using this extender to enlarge the subject matter in the image frame. Not to reach long distances. Atmospheric interference means any haziness, or heat haze will only be magnified. This extender was designed for L lenses. It works superbly with the prime lenses. I have used it with the 300mm f/2.8 ver II, 500mm f/2.8 ver II as well as the 600mm f/4 ver II. In addition, I have used this extender with the EF 100-400mm ver II. The images this combo produces is amazing considering it is not a prime lens. If your goal is to extend your reach so you can take pictures of distant subjects and expect a clear and sharp image, you will be disappointed. Even a prime lens with the extended reach will have difficulty producing a clear image due to atmospheric conditions. However, if you are taking pictures of subjects such as birds, or aircraft that fit 1/2 of the frame and wish to have images that fill 3/4 or more of a frame at distances that are not effected by atmospheric conditions, then you will amazed by the results this combination provides. Note: on a zoom lens such as the 100-400mm ver II, your f stop will become f/8 and therefore you will only be able to use a small portion of the autofocus points and in lower models perhaps manual focus will be your only choice. This is where a mirrorless camera is the perfect solution as it will allow for use of all autofocus points. Also, because of the additional reach, you will need to increase your shutter speed and expect slower autofocus acquisition in low light. This is an excellent addition to ones photography tools, but needs to be used in appropriate conditions.

extender 1.4x lll not sharp?

It appears to not be sharp at least at 4.0, 4.5, 5.0 and low apertures. Not surprised as I have had a few 1.4x extenders that have also proven to not be sharp. Very annoying...It may get sent back after I run a few more tests.

Happy with my purchase

Sharp image. Minor complaint is that I didn't consider that I wouldn't be able to open up my 70-200 to 2.8 with the extender on. Other than this miscalculation on my part I'm pleased with this piece of equipment.

Just average?

Shooting with a Canon 6DMk II, and both of my L series lens 100-400 and 70-200, with the larger lens hard to track and focus on my subject (aircraft) loss of F/stops and quite dark. The 70-200 and extender faired better but still in the long run I wasn't happy with the addition and returned the equipment to Adorama.

Works well physically and functionally

The Canon Extender EF 1.4x III has worked very well so far (I haven't used it extensively yet). I use it with the Canon 400 mm f/5.6 lens and the extender couples well to the lens and camera, physically and functionally. I have noticed that occasionally, the auto-focus will not work well. Also, the focus point s are reduced to just the center. However, this all is better than another extender I used before.

Excellent Image Quality with L Glass

Excellent Quality. Very useful. Better Image Quality than using the 2x and loses only one stop of light. I have used it on the canon EF 400 f2.8, EF 500 f4.0 and EF 100-400.

About Canon Extender

FEATURED REVIEWS

Great, works great with 70-200 2.8 IS II

By sb

Also have 1.4X I, the 2X III is definitely worth having. Sharpness is much improved over previous versions. Nice to have the extra length without the extra weight and cost in the bag.

Great extender for my needs

By Shiftysdad

Outstanding images with this in conjunction with my 300mmF2.8L. Frustrating that it does not work with the 100-400 F4.5L ll USM, while it did work with the original version of this lens, (although this was not consistent). I also own the 1.4x extender. Curious that it works with all of the above mentioned lenses.

Extending a lenses focal length by a factor of 1.4x, Extender EF 1.4x III incorporates phenomenal optical performance with minimal chromatic aberration and is a perfect complement to many of Canon super telephoto lenses.

It features a built-in microcomputer for seamless communication among camera body, lens and extender; features careful lens placement and coatings to minimize ghosting and flare and even has a new Fluorine coating that keeps soiling, smears and fingerprints to a minimum.

An integral part of many professional systems, Extender EF 1.4x III maintains high standards not only optically, but also in terms of rugged, dustproof and water resistant construction.

Note:
This lens is only compatible with fixed focal length L-series lenses 135mm and over, as well as the EF 70-200/2.8L, EF 70-200/2.8L IS, EF 70-200/4L, and EF 100-400/4.5-5.6L. Additionally, please see the lens and/or camera body manual for full compatibility information with the Extender EF 2x III.
