Questions & Answers

PAUL G : is the lens compatible with the rebel XTi series camera?MARTIN B : Yes, it is compatible with cropped sensor cameras.
Shopper : is the mount plastic or metal?THEODORE H : Its plastic and very light weightALBERT B : This has a plastic mount and is for a beginner like meBARBARA P : Can't remember -- I sold this item about 3 months ago when I purchased a new camera.TIMOTHY K : The bayonet mount appears to be made of a hard plastic. My only concern is that it might become brittle in extreme cold. I have used my lens in temperatures as low as 25 deg F for a few hours without problems. It looks like it would be easy to replace the bayonet mount (should it break) as it is held in place with 4 small screws that are easily accessible on the back of the lens.JOSEPH D : The mount is plastic.CYNTHIA C : Returned it. Cheaply made. I own all canon lenses and love them but not this one. I ended up getting a Sigma 18-50 f-2.8 and I love it!JOHN C : It's plastic. Like you I gave this careful consideration. No worries, unless you are a pro this is an awesome lens. It is not regular plastic. This lens is very quiet, I love it, I highly recommend it. John
PEIKAI W : For most occasions, will this lens be a complement with 40mm pancake , or there will be many overlapping use cases?VERNEITTA F : In my opinion, it complement it. I use it for close up photo's not like a micro but my close shots. It is not really good for landscape shots, because you have to get close to whatever you are shooting, since it is a prime lens, and cannot zoom. I switch between the two, when I want close, and sharp I go with the pancake, when I want landscape I go with the 18-55. Someone else may feel different about this. . Hopefully this has helped you some.TIMOTHY K : I have not used the Canon EF 40mm F/2.8 STM Pancake lens. The 40mm F/2.8 is obviously faster and preferable for low light or fast action situations assuming it has good optical quality. I bought the EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens as a lower priced alternative to the faster lenses and I do not regret the purchase, it is a good quality lens and represents excellent value for the price - I would buy one again. I have used the EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens for serious astrophotography of the Milky Way at 18mm F/3.5 and obtained surprisingly sharp star images across the entire field (I am using an APS chip which is more forgiving than full frame). I have also obtained sharp star images at 55mm at focal lengths between 18-55mm including 40mm. I am using a Canon 60Da camera. For daylight photos the EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens is excellent. Image stabilization seems to work fine. For still photos I usually get better results with manual focus than autofocus, this has been true for every autofocus lens I have ever used including the L series lenses.james h : The 18-55 and the 2.8/40mm pancake share the same focal length (40mm), but that is about it. Otherwise they are two unique lenses. The 18-55 is a good starter lens and, if you only had one lens, that would likely be it. But, the 40mm pancake is lighter, brighter and faster. The 18mm focal length is good to have, especially for photos of groups of people or large scenes. However, instead of the 18-55, you might consider a 17-85 or a 18-135 for more reach and versatility. Either one would go nicely with your 40mm pancake.JOSEPH D : The faster aperture, f/2.8, on the 40mm lens makes it good for portraits and short telephoto work. Its a better macro lens than the 18-55mm lens.PATRICK K : It will complement for low light shooting or when you want to carry a small setup.

Junk lens from the start

When I got it, Auto focus did not work so I was stuck using Manual focus for everything. Now after 2 years my camera says "Err 01 Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts" This lens has and always will be TRASH.

Your Average Lens

I have been using this lens for about one year and it is an average lens. I use this lens on my Canon EOS T5i DSLR. When I was a beginner, I used the servo auto-focus and sometimes it would not focus properly. Also, the lens is close to the manual focus area, and it is hard not to touch the lens. I would rate this lens a 3/5.

Well this is a surprise!

This lens is the king of the kit lenses and not only! It is very surprisingly sharp indeed and the STM autofocus motor works extremely fast and silently. You will simply be amazed.

Good for my job

We use this lens in conjunction with a Cannon t6i to produce great photographs of families in a portrait style for my work. This lens is perfect for getting both wide and zoomed in pictures with great detail. Would highly recommend for any amateur or professional photographer or business. (:

outstanding for the price

Sure, there are features I'd enjoy that this lens doesn't have, (such as infinity-stop focusing), but I'd pay an awful lot to get any of those few features, and they're really not that important. In all aspects that for me are essential, this lens performs so well that it's hard to believe I got it for such a small price.

Excellent

Incredibly sharp that in sharpness my 24-105mm “L” lens is not any sharper than this lens. What impressed me the most was that focusing is silent and very fast. For shooting video I would not use any other lens. I would say this lens is the by far the best APS-C (Crop Sensor lens you can use. It's a thrill to use this lens.

An Excellent purchase

is my first purchase of a Canon SLR camera and Canon lenses. My first set of photographs of my grand son's birthday part were more than satisfactory. All pictures were clear, crisp and color balanced. I hope to take more pictures, particularly nature pictures in the near future.

Great DSLR Camera

This Canon EOS Rebel Camera I bought is very easy to use. I have to say one thing that struck me as clever was the explanation of the Camera Settings, (when you turn the settings Knob) displayed on the LCD Screen. Excellent smarts there from Canon.

disappointed!

This is my first SLR camera. Bought this camera based on the Canon name. I was told that the T3 was a good camera for beginners. This is the lens that came with it. So far my experience is disappointing. I take better pictures with my iPhone:(When I focus on a subject, it takes forever to "read" the lighting and I therefore often miss the picture. I attended a class and was told that this is a "KIT Lens" and that I need to upgrade. I don't think I should have to upgrade yet. I feel the camera and lens should work! This is not the highest price range for EOS cameras, but nonetheless It should work! I was excited about the prospect of creating better quality pics....I'm afraid It will not happen with this camera and lens.

Great video lens

The 18-55 mm IS STM lens is great for video. It smoothly & noiselessly glides from subject to subject. For stills the focus is lightning fast. Super sharp lens. At closer distances at 18mm, barrel distortion is very pronounced. I have not noticed it at normal distances. The plastic bayonet mount contributes to its light weight; but I prefer metal. The electronic manual focus takes getting used to. You have to have the camera on to focus & there are no stops at the ends of the focus travel. The focus ring is always free turning. The faster you turn it, the faster the lens focuses. Rotate the other way & the lens focuses the other direction. The electronic focus is an acceptable trade off for the super auto focus. The lens looks better in real life, but still looks like a kit lens. The hood (extra shades well , but is unattractive

Kit Lens with a twist

I ordered this lens for a Canon T4i. The STM was designed for this camera for focusing while filming. The noise created by non STM lenses is horrendous! The noise was eliminates with this lens but thats about it. The auto focus is not as advanced on this camera as the recently released 70D so it didnt benefit me. I'm also not a fan of really light weight lenses so that was a con. I never use the kit lens and since this is simply the kit lens with a twist, it didn't work out for me.

Good lens 4 the price

This lens came with the Rebel T5i as a kit and have no complaints - wish it stopped down to 2.8 f stop.

Great Kit Lens

For a kit lens this is really good. Never had an issue with sharpness unless it is operator error. Very light weight and makes for a nice carry around lens.

Sharp, Quick, Smooth Quiet Great

I purchased this lens to go with my Canon T4i as I wanted the best possible video performance and the flexibility of zoom lens. I had considered the 40mm STM lens but for the $ difference this lens is a much better value. It's lightweight construction is a real advantage as it permits you to use a lightweight stabilizer to get the best possible video performance. The full time manual focus is a real step up from the old kit lens and adds extra value.
