Questions & Answers

Sully Man S : ok the big question what is the correct lens, ha ha, I do a lot of sports photos, softball, and want to kknow if i am just dreaming. is there somthing that will allow me to sit 20ft from first base and shoot photos of third base and good photos of the left field then quikly pull back and get that shot of home base and first base. or do i just need to deal with changing lenses every time?TOM H : this lens is big and heavy - not to mention a push pull variable f zoom - I found it handy doing fashion on a tripod when you wanted to go from a tight face to a full length but felt like it really lacked the speed to shoot sports with - I would go with multiple lenses on two bodies to prevent switching - I ended up selling this a year after I got it.
Shopper : What is Gray Market means? Is this a used Camera Lens?STEPHEN P : Grey market is a term used to describe merchandise imported or distributed from a country or supplier not necessarily the Original manufacturer or distributor. This allows a product to be offered for sale often at a reduced price, compared to the same product that has been imported from the manufacturer or the manufacturer's distributer. The upside to grey products is lower cost, the down side is that the warranty support is not via the manufacturer, but is often provided by the seller. Grey market products are new, not used.SYBIL S : Grey market means that the item has been imported and does not have a US warrantee. I don't buy grey market for this reason. Grey market items are usually cheaper. Always ask if it is grey market.
Shopper : What is Gray Market?TOM H : Grey mkt. indicates no US warranty FRANK C : A gray market version means that it has been imported through channels other than the domestic distributor (in this case Canon USA). If you buy from a reputable distributor, such as Adorama, the lens will be exactly the same as a lens from Canon USA. The difference is that the warranty on the gray market lens will not be recognized by Canon USA. A camera or lens that is imported through normal channels will have a US warranty card included. If warranty work is required, you must have that card along with your purchase receipt for warranty service to be performed by the manufacturer. That means that the first year warranty will come from the dealer, usually. This could prove to be a hassle if you are unlucky enough to get a defective copy. Otherwise, there isn't any difference, except perhaps a slight difference in price.

28-300L Review

It's not as sharp as the newer 100-400, but it is a great all-in-one hiking lens.

Street Sweeper

The street sweeper does great on the street, with kids, and on stages. One lens that fits most situations.

Most awesome lens in my bag!

I am a professional wedding photographer, and specialize in beach weddings. This is my go to lens for beach weddings - yes, it is a bit on the heavy side, but it's value is unmatched!! 10+ years and never worrying about changing lenses outside especially on the beach because of the dust factor, this lens handles all my needs. Although it is not so great for inside darkly lit ceremonies.

Heavy beast, but folks always like the images.

It's heavy, but I love having a 24-70 and a 70-200 all in one lens that's always ready to shoot. I get shots others do not simply because the lens is always ready to shoot Great color and sharpness from the Canon 6D, 6DII, and 7DII.

Great "all-in-one"

I've had the 28-300 for almost a month. I wanted something that I could leave on my 5D4 so as not to miss an opportunity while walking/hiking. Many times I've had to choose between short/long telephoto and changing required diving into my backpack. This lens solves that while providing great image quality. This lens, combined with my 5D4 is not a light combination, however. I expected that when looking at the specs. While that could seem a detraction, it prevents having two cameras out and ready.

Great Lens

I purchase the lens to be used on a Canon 5D Mark IV to use on a cruise this summer. I am having a great time learning how to use its features. I like the feature where you can lock a lens position. It takes great photos in low light.

My go to lens for everything!

This lens saves so much room in my kit. While being a little in the heavy side, it replaces 4 lenses. I cover motor sports and I only need 2 lenses now to get all the shots I need at any event. It is also the perfect ‘walking around lens’ due it it’s terrific range. Very sharp!

Superb lens...

After researching this lens I decided to go ahead and purchase one. The biggest complaint I had read was about it's weight... It is a little hefty but not that bad (3.68 lbs add a mono or tripod if need be, but seriously it's not like you're lugging around a 600mm prime and considering the versatility of this lens for the most part it's all the lens you'll need... Think about it, you won't be caring around multiple lenses and having to switch them out in the field. It's a perfect travel lens. The second complaint was the Push Pull zoom. Personally I love it! It only took a few minutes to get the hang of it, and now I wish all my zoom lenses had it. AF function is super fast, and optical quality is outstanding. The only con for me on this lens would be is its price... But then you get what you pay for. Bottom line; This lens has quickly become my most favorite lens I own and has found its forever home on my 5D Mark IV.

Great lens for school sports events

I'm getting back into photography, so I'm an "advanced hobbyist" (below amateur level who just made the jump from a crop sensor to a Canon full frame (EOS-1DS Mk III). This camera body is great for still subjects; however, when paired up with this EF 28-300mm, I gained an unexpectedly excellent ability to shoot track & field events and swim meets with excellent clarity. The slide-action zoom took some getting used to, but now I'm wondering how I ever did without it. I use a monopod to address camera shake and the weight...the lens is heavier than it looks, and it's hard to understand what 1670 grams really is until you carry this lens. However, on a sturdy monopod, I can "lean into it" just a little and use my fingertips to swiftly move the lens barrel fore-aft as needed to get the zoom I want even with an athlete running straight at me. I don't know if I would be able to be as successful with a twist-barrel zoom. In general, when it gets dark in the late evening, I have to change to a faster setup (faster lens and newer camera body), since I try to avoid using a flash. Still, this lens works well in a decently lit stadium, even with my older EOS-1DS (and the limited ISO range attendant to older cameras). Being able to quickly getting to the desired zoom is such a blessing when there is action to be captured, and again, the image clarity is surprising at both ends of its zoom range. Naturally, it's absolutely superb in the middle 80% of that range. This is a keeper, and I'm finding that when the sun is out or if I have otherwise decent lighting indoors or out, this has become the favorite lens I am using most every since I acquired it, and I've only had it for a month. Can't wait to see what it will do when I can finally scrape together enough to get a newer full frame Canon body with a better ISO range for dark and dimly lit conditions.

THE ULTIMATE LENS

This lens has the capabilities I have been needing. I have shot weddings and landscapes but always having to switch lenses to get exactly what I needed. This lens gives me the range far and near along with the speed, aperture, and ISO I need to accomplish my needs without flash.

Bought It Twice it Worked so nice

I highly recommend this Lens product. I bought it when it originally came out. I used it for several years and sold it to a friend, I recently bought another unit when I realized I had been missing having the particular versatility that only this heavy lens can offer.

The everyday lens from heaven

I been using this lens like no other and has been permanent fixture for my nature photography adventures. Currently shoot with a 6D. Living in Oregon the elements are damp here but this lens is very well sealed off and resistant. The best part is the crisp, clean and professional look your images have. If you are a camper/hiker and want to take the best photos of adventures this is the lens for you. It definitely does the work of 3 lenses hence the weight. Yeah it might be on the heavy side but makes up in the image quality.

Out of all my Canon lenses this is my favorite

I purchased this when they were first released, so long ago I don't remember. This stayed on my 1DSIII 95% of the time and now stays on my 5DS R 98% of the time. The best praise I can offer is - IT JUST WORKS! where ever needed.

Trade off for convenience

I've been using this lens with my EOS 5D Mark III for a couple of months and am happy with the convenience of not having to switch lenses. At a third of the price, I would have considered it a good value for a utility lens I use whenever I feel I'm going to be in need of that kind of quick versatility. The images are consistently very soft, lacking even acceptable sharpness in most cases. It performs reasonably well, if you limit yourself to middle aperatures in the 8 to 11 range, while sticking to a focal length between 100 and 170mm. So much for the vaunted versatility. Over-priced and over-rated. The downside isn't the extra weight, it's the overall performance.

The best

I use this lens more then any other lens I own. Amazing lens. I shoot 80 percent of a wedding with this one lens. I do wish the tripod ring was more robust. I have had to replace mine and I am sending it in this week to be replaced again. I am really really hoping for a new version very soon.

I would recommend this lens.

On the downside, the lens is heavy. The zoom tightness is adjustable and could be a little smoother. On the upside, if Ican only have one lens, this is the only lens I carry because of it's versatility.

One lens fits all!

Rented a few times, then finally bought it. My go-to workhorse lens I have on 95% of the time. If I had to pic one lens for the rest of my life, this is the one. Built like a tank and heavy, just love it!

Great Lens

This lens is great when you only want to take a single lens and know that you will have standard (I wouldn't call iit wide) to telephoto shots. I use it for sporting events, wildlife and conventions. Only drawbacks are the size and weight if you are going to be out all day and the fact that it will not work with a multiplier. Have not used the accessories yet, so cannot comment on them. Too much fun taking pictures!

Highly recommended

Highly recommend. I read every review and watched every video I could find on this lens. I feel the reviews are accurate. If you read and watch them you will know exactly what you are buying. The only down side of this lens that I feel is non debatable is its weight. Yes it is a bit heavy. It doesn’t bother me at 6' 180lbs but some might be put off a bit. That said I love every other feature and aspect of this lens and I feel the weight is simply a byproduct of a superb design and build. There is one thing the reviews do not mention and it is of foremost importance and must be considered in todays high tech world. Lenses are part of an imaging system. The system consists mainly of the camera, the lens and the software. Comparing this lens to other sharper lenses means nothing unless you plan to make huge prints. With todays sensors and software the final image product is rarely compromised by a quality lens that is only 99% of some other super sharp zoom. Consider the incredible range of FL and the choice for me was simple. As has been stated in many of the reviews, rent it first if you can to make sure you will be OK with the weight. You'll love the image quality.

An elephant of a Lens

The EF 28-300 f/3.5-5.6L is my walkabout lens on my 7DII. Although it is fairly large for a compact lens, I have no issues with its weight or size. It's not as sharp as my Canon prime lenses but its versatility far outweighs that issue. In low light conditions I use it with my 600EX-RT and couldn't be more pleased with the results. Fully understanding what this lens is and what it's capable of doing, my only issue with it is the zoom tension ring locking against the focus ring, and that's not that big a deal. Anyone in the market for a general purpose, highly versatile zoom lens that delivers amazing results, for what it is, must seriously consider acquiring one of these gems. It may be nicknamed the white elephant, but that's a good thing...

Stop Waiting, Buy It!

I watched this lens for literally a year, reading review after review, trying to figure out if it was worth the money before I finally purchased it. Since I took it out of the box, I have not taken the lens off my camera (18 MP 60D and LOVE IT! So much so that I'm about upgrade to a 5D or a 6D and I've finally fulfilled a long dream and officially started my photography company!! USES - I have gotten awesome shots at sporting events (Football, NHRA, Swimming), family sessions, portraits/headshots, architectural, and outdoor/landscape with this lens....There is nothing this lens will not do! Why I Waited - Outside of the cost, seeing the reviews about the weight of the lens is what made me the most nervous. Yes it is heavy, but after my 2nd or 3rd time shooting with the lens the weight was a non-issue/Not-noticeable. I shot for over 3 hours last week at a local park doing multiple family sessions and never grew tired at all. So seriously, quit worrying if it is worth it and buy it already!

Great in bright light

Okay, in reference to the earlier review; I kept the lens and I have been using it due to it's incredibly flexible range. I shot offroad races last weekend and the lens was the no brainer to take. I could get people in the pits close by and when the cars were at a distance you get (300mm) shots that don't look like they are taken close by. They look great. The clarity is very good and again the lens worked great right up to sundown. As long as you know this the lens is a killer. After the light dims go to super fast lens ( I avoid flash if at all possible.) So do you get a 28-300? I would do it again and give it 5 stars now. PS Yes I give the tightening ring more attention than I admit and it is a pain at Petco Park moving around, but when the action is fast and you want the tall lens and then it must be shorter and then close up and then long again... well that is this lens! The reviews of the images have been great.

How Did I Live Without It?

I've got a number of lenses for my 5D Mark III - some from a 15 year old 30-D including a 28-200mm zoom. The old lens works on the Mark III just fine but really doesn't seem to provide the artistic effect that I wanted. So, I took the plunge and bought the EF 28-300mm IS USM lens. Boy, I am happy that I did! The new zoom lens is heavy to be sure and you'll probably want to hold the lens body as you carry it as it's a bit heavy for the neck strap alone. The beauty of the new EF lens for me is that I can see the shot I want and zoom in to fill the frame with the elements I want getting rid of what I don't want. The sliding barrel zoom function enables me to very quickly look at lots of framing options and the IS feature gets rid of any camera shake in lower light conditions. Of course, the neatest feature is the ability to go from a focal length of 28mm to 300mm without changing the lens. All-in-all this is a great lens for the photographer who needs these capabilities.

In the field comparison

By Howiedoin

I am an L series fanatic owning six of them from the 16-35 to the 100-400. In December of 2011 I took my triplet 4year olds to their first Disney World experience. I had seven full days of prime shooting opportunities. Due to family restrictions on gear I decided to take only one lense per day and compare. The lenses I chose were the 24-105, 70-200 f/2.8 IS, 28-300, and finally the 100-400. I can say with out a doubt now that everyday that I did not carry the 28-300, I missed beautiful opport...

Totally Satisfied

By Cross W.

I have been a pro since 1981. I have used 35mm, 2 1/4 square, and 4x5 in studio and on location. This lens is the one I use almost every time I shoot. I have the 16x35 2.8 and the 50 1.2 and I love them both, but when I am shooting sessions or weddings... this is the lens that I use almost exclusively. I have two 5D Mk2 bodies and the 28-300mm lens stays on one of them all the time. The clarity, color, sharpness, contrast, image stabilization, ease of use, durability... I could go on and on.....
