I own several Canon lenses: 70-200mm f4 IS lens 100mm f.28 macro 1.4x II Converter used to own the Canon 100-400 IS This lens is incredibly sharp, fully L quality. If was not happy with the 100-400mm at the 400mm end. My copy was not sharp. This lens is super sharp, great colors and bokeh. The IS is a very useful feature. The guy who reported poor performance obviously got a faulty copy. You can read reviews on this lens all over the place and it is just about perfect. I use it outdoors. A bonus is that the close minimum focal range allows you to get great shots of dragonflies etc.. You can see the individual elements of their compound eyes and still be far enough away not to scare them off. This is the best value long lens you will find. Next after this is the 400mm DO. I would love one but can't justify the price. The 300mm f4 IS retains autofocus with the 1.4x converter.

Tack sharp, lightweight and well designed, Canon's 300 4 IS will not disapoint. On a digital crop body the 1.6 conversion will give you 480mm that can be handheld due to the IS when conditions are extreme and you can't use a tripod. It can be matched with Canon's 1.4x converter to give you 670mm and still retain its Auto Focus and IS. Overall a great lens [...]

Compact L-series telephoto lens with an Image Stabilizer which compensates for camera shake with the equivalent effect of a shutter speed two stops faster. Two Image Stabilizer modes are provided: Stabilizer Mode 1 (the same mode featured on the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM) and the new Stabilizer Mode 2 which steadies the image during horizontal or vertical panning. Mode 2 detects the panning direction automatically. The closest focusing distance is 4.9 feet (1.5 m).
