Good for Bird Photography

This is one Outstanding Lens... A beautiful addition. A very good value for the $$$. You'll not find prime telephotos better, unless you're willing to spend $8K or more.

A great prime Telephoto

Not Canon's best, however, still a very fine lens. I've had mine for over a year and I love it.

Just needs IS

Great lens. It's only shortcoming is the lack of IS.

Price wise it is a good lens.

Great lens but because no image stabilization I could only give a four stars. You will have lots of soft images because of it. You just have to take lots of pics and delete most to get some sharp ones. Fastest shutter speed possible and or tripod helps.

Best Buy

I bought the 400mm f/5.6L to round out my telephoto lenses. It mounts on a gimbal so IS was not that important to me ( they have been talking about adding IS since its introduction but I don’t think it’s ever going to happen ). I use it for wildlife photos both outdoors and zoo settings. Very happy with this lens. Bang for the buck, it would be hard to beat.

...A Must-Have Lens!

...If you are serious about doing any bird and/or wildlife photography, whether it be still or video...then this is a lens you really must have in your kit! This telephoto lens is rock solid, built like a tank, with a substantial built-in hood, easy to use controls, and crystal-clear focus. Even tho it has electronic focus and aperture control, it still feels easy to use in manual mode, with direct input and results that are quick and positive. Start with this lens as your base kit, and you will never be disappointed.

The combination is very sharp!

I have had my 400mm 5.6 Canon lens for several years and have found it a very sharp lens. I had been discouraged from using an extender by some of the reviews. However I just received a used Canon 2X Extender ii from Adorama today and I am very pleased with it. The combination is very sharp! Even though I got a used extender (E+ rating), it looks like new. Attached are two photos, one with a 1.4X and the other with the 2X.

Want this lens? But this bundle.

This lens is a tank with near legendary status in the photography world. Adorama is pretty much the best place to buy from. Oh! What a winning hand! Also the stuff they bundle this lens with is real knick knacky but fun and useful indeed and all for free. If you've been wanting this lens and don't trust refurbished or used, this is the bundle to buy.

So Far, So Good

I haven't had this lens long enough to draw many significant conclusions - I've only had it for a week - but so far it's proved to be incredibly sharp; it's L glass after all, and is definitely living up to its reputation. It's also considerably lighter and focuses much more quickly than my older, comparable 400 mm. I shoot almost exclusively from a tripod, so have no need of IS. Image quality has been absolutely superb and I'm looking forward to getting out in the field with it.

Canon's Hidden Gem

This is my 2nd canon 400mm f/5.6 lens. I use this mainly for Bird photography. It is light, perfect for hand holding as used in Birds in Flight photography. Did I forget to say that it is sharp and the crisp AF helps also if there is good lighting. This lens also rates higher than the 100-400 lens by Canon which is also a good starter lens.

Very sharp, great for birds in flight

I bought this to replace another lens that failed several years ago, so I have had plenty of experience with it shooting various wildlife, primarily birds for large prints, typically up to 36 inches on a side, using a Canon 40D, then a 60D. This lens is capable of extremely high IQ images. The best aperture is wide open at f5.6, f8 still holding up for critical work for 36 inch prints, including cropping, so it will really produce a highly defined 42-48" print if you are really careful in your technique. I consider this is a much better lens for use of fast moving small objects, such as small birds in flight, over the larger and much more expensive F4 or F2.8. The advantage is that this lens can be easily used hand held and at full aperture. F5.6 means you still have some depth of field at close range. The larger siblings are best used as tripod queens which naturally makes them not as responsive to quickly changing scenes in a 360 degree field, as happens often with wildlife. If you are seriously shooting sports or large animals such as deer and elk at a distance, the larger glass has an advantage, but really only one of two f stops. The only problem I had with this lens was an annoying problem with clear protective filters when I first brought it. I didn't get to carefully test it before a shoot overseas. It produced high IQ pictures in a quick field test before the trip. So I put a high quality UV filter on to protect the lens. Every shot was dead soft when I carefully reviewed them later. (Good thing I was being paid for other photography on the trip, not the bird pictures) I was very upset, as I lost many stunning scenes due to the issue. It turned out to be the filter, but not just that filter. When I tried to find a filter that would not act like a diffusion screen, I had to try over 20 filters to find one that worked. Ironically, it ended up being a cheap filter, not a B&W, or Tiffin, exc. So my one warning is be careful with filters on this lens.It a bizarre problem. I've never seen the issue with another telephoto, but I have seen it with wide angle lenses.

Great Customer Service

Have been looking at this lens for a few months, It's fast, lightweight, and great for Birds on the wing. Will use mainly for birding and wildlife photography. My only concern was whether or not it came with the tripod mount ring. The online assistance wasn't to sure, and never couold answer outright with a yes or no, and the item description wasn't very clear, pictures showed it, but the what's in the box didn't list it. Overall, very pleased with Adorama and will continue to order from them verses anyone else.

Tack Sharp Wildlife Images

This lens is a big improvement over my previous Canon 100-400L, in that it creates very sharp images. It is also lighter to lug around, and I use it with and without a tripod. Not having a zoom is mostly OK, as I tended to use the zoom at 400 anyway. I would like this 400 to be faster and have IS, but for the price, a great addition to my imaging capabilities.

Amazing lens!

I read reviews until my eyeballs hurt on this lens, comparing it against the 100-400 and the 300 f/4L. I am so happy I decided to get the 400mm prime. It just does its job superbly. I had been worried about the f/5.6 initially but after actually using the lens my fears are totally allayed. Indeed f/5.6 is not optimal for low light but I have found surprisingly that I was able to get great shots of wildlife even at dawn without direct light. In fact, I prefer f/5.6 for the slightly deeper DOF. Also I've found the reasonable weight (it's not light by any means but it is certainly manageable) to be very helpful- getting the lens there, and weilding it properly, are very important, and both are just easier with this lens. Sharpness is absolutely fantastic, focus after 8.5m is the fastest I've used. Just a great product!

Excellent lens!! Very clear and Sharp

Very good lens. It comes with it's own lens hood and carry case with a belt loop and shoulder strap. You can shoot off hand when conditions are right but used with a tripod its perfect. However, I use a Bi-Pod or shooting sticks designed for shooting a rifle. They are much lighter and faster to set up than a tripod. I prefer a bi-pod with this lens for taking pics. of wildlife or action shots when time matters. Focusing is very fast and accurate. Fanstastic L Lens. I can still take great shots in low light but requires a change in ISO settings.

Great policy

This lens is great for what I need amazing clarity and autofocus. I like to shoot birds and get wonderful results. It also does amazing when using the 1.4 teleconverter. For those of us who do not have the megabucks to spend on a lens this is an amazing lens. You will be pleased. The service from Adorama is also great.

Solid condition V used rig

Using this for wildlife photography with and without a 1.4x converter. This is a long slow lens that can produce the goods when the conditions are right, but therein lies the issue - a lack of versatility. I really wanted it for shooting near 600mm from a ground blind in wetlands and for that application its perfect. I purchased mine in "v" condition from adorama used and its still a great lens. The focus is fast and resolution is just slightly better at f5.6 than my 200mm f2.8LII prime with 2x extender at f8. This 400 f5.6 at f8 produces excellent results the likes of which i had never seen with my previous prime+extender combo. At first I was nervous about purchasing a used lens but this L lens from canon had superior build quality and few moving parts as well as a simple optical design. I purchased from adorama knowing that i could send it back no questions asked, tested it in as many conditions as I could and decided that this v condition used 400mm f5.6 lens is the perfect addition to my growing photography habit.

Well worth its price!!!!

I was hesitant to spend the money for one lens, but now am so very glad I did. This lens is GREAT for any type of wildlife photography (which is what I purchased it for). I can get crystal clear images just hand holding the camera in day light. In low light settings, the camera/lens will need to be placed on a tripod. I LOVE, LOVE this lens and highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in wildlife photography.

Excellent value for money

If you need a long lens, as I do for bird photography, and you want a good quality Canon L lens, this is the way to go unless you are prepared to pay a great deal more. Works well with a 1.4 extender. Consistent sharp lens that is not too heavy. It complements my 200mm L lens and my 24-70mm L lens. I use it on a 5D Mark ii.

Great for the price

Great lens for the price. A little heavy. In low light you need a tri-pod.

Great Lens For the money

I bought this lens for taking bird photos, and has worked very well. Very sharp lens. Good for birds in flight. Built in lens hood is a definate plus. The lens is a little heavy, but if you want a quality lens built like a tank, thats to be expected. No complaints.

Good option for those on a budget

Slips a bit when mounted on my 40d. Needs good light or steady support. Soft wide open. Very fast autofocus, good for birds in flight. Relativelt cheap for what you get.

Great Bang for the Buck

I use this lens primarily for wildlife photography, including birds in flight. As long as there is LOTS of light, I find the results very impressive. I certainly wouldn't say it's as sharp as its f2.8 big brother (that I've occasionally rented), but it's closer than the price difference alone would suggest. The downside of f5.6 and no IS, of course, is that one needs really high ISOs to take advantage of morning/late-afternoon light, and the results are iffy. Still, I love this lens and use it very regularly.

A lens with sharp image

The lens takes sharp images of birds and other wild life. The lens must be attached to a sturdy tripod. A cheap tripod will not allow the lens to perform at it's best.

Won the test

I spent quite a bit of tine (and money) renting and testing different lenses before I bought the 400L. It won the battle against two very popular zoom lenses hands down. I use this lens primarily for wildlife and surfing pictures. It produces tack sharp images even for fast moving subjects like body surfers. Have already won two small photo competitions with it. Can't beat the price for the reach on a 7D.

Terrific lens... best in bright light

By MICHAEL C.

Let me start off by explaining why I gave this 5 stars. Recognizing that it is NOT the mega$$$ 400 f/2.8 IS L for 6K or the twice-as-expensive and lighter second edition, I am judging this lens based on its admitted limitations and strengths. If you are willing to trade off shooting some "clunkers" in exchange for saving thousands of dollars, you will be thrilled with this piece of glass. I have used this lens for a couple of years from my backyard to Yosemite, from birding in nearby fo...

Nice and compact super-tele lens

By Python

I've owned and used this lens for about 3 years now and I can say I am quite satisfied. A tele-photo lens as long as 400mm is not really for everyday use. Thus the use of this lens is quite restricted but it goes the same with all the other super telephoto lenses over 400mm focal length including those monterously heavy and expensive lenses with faster apertures. When you use it for sports event shots or for some air shows, it really works fine. Focusing is fast, accurate and silky smooth....
