Great walk around lens for street photography and for times when you don't want extra weight. Image quality is very good, but do not expect it to perform like L glass. Know what you are buying. I use this on both digital Canon bodies and EOS film cameras. Very happy with my purchase.

This lens works as described, but I am not exactly thrilled with it, and I am not quite sure why not ! The price is right, and it is very compact and lightweight. It suffers a bit of barrel distortion, which is not expected on a 40 mm lens - as it surely would be on a wider angle lens product. While it does a good job, I give it four stars as I rarely use it, and I would recommend the 50 mm if you want a "regular" lens, and the 28 mm if want a wider angle - 40 mm is just not enough to add this lens to your collection. At least, that is my take - your mileage may vary. Good luck. TT

The autofocus on this lens is dope. It smoothly focuses on subject. Although for my indoor use, 2.8f did not solve the problem of lighting completely, but this lens did pretty good to improve it a lot.

This has come to be one of my favorite lenses. This is the second time I’ve purchased it after selling the first copy years ago. The slight vignette it gives my images is something that I really enjoy. It’s super sharp and makes my camera so lightweight and easy going. For the price, it’s stellar, and even without considering the price it’s a worthy companion for my camera.

Love the compact form factor. Use it for street photography, weighs very little.
Super 6.

This is a nice focal length. Lot's of sharpness packed in a small size. Lens itself is great. It's my walk-about lens. I don't have a camera for it without an adapter. Ideally a small camera that can mate with the EF mount. EOS R or M6 are all fine but I have to use an adapter either way, which is a pity.

This lens has a small profile, and works remarkably well. The focus is great and the lens itself is well-built.

It's a really good and affordable lens, but the autofocus is a little slow. Wish it was faster.

Nice little lens! Does the work of a normal perspective lens - Beautiful, distortion free images! Since it's so light and tiny, it's great on full frame and crop sensor digital cameras, and it even works as a natural compliment to smaller, lightweight film cameras like my 35mm EOS Rebel Ti from 2003. If I had one thing I had to nitpick about, it would be that the focus is entirely motor-driven. You can't adjust the focus on this thing without the AF "on" at the time, like when tapping the shutter for AF. That said, it works very well!

This amazing lens is a performer! Can’t tell any quality difference when compared to other normal lenses....so why not use the smallest one they make? Team this up with Canon’s baby DSLR and this combo will fit in a coat pocket and thus be available at all times. Brilliant.

I have owned this lens since 2013 and use it often as my light walk around lens on my APS-C or Full Frame Mark IV great sharpness center to edges, some vignette at 2.8, but can correct in photo editing. Little distortion and absolutely no flare (no need for a lens hood wonderful sunstars and a very good to best portrait lens from my full frame to APS-C M6 with canon adapter. This might be better focal length all around than the 50 mm F1.8 that is better for lower light photo and video. Close focuses to 13 inches. Bohka is very good. 50mm 1.8 newer lens has better Bohka and great for portraits.

Love this little guy! Sharp, quick and small. I'm using it on my 5DMk4 and my M6Mk2. Love the focal length achieved on each of these very different cameras!

The excellent sharpness is hampered by very sluggish autofocus. From full out to full in it takes 3 seconds. That's just ridiculous. At least it is compact and light.

This lens is very slow to focus. Customer Service gave me a run-around... Not impressed. Will probably shop elsewhere.

Solid lens for the price. Automatic is of course a little slow taking that it is a pancake lens, but not too slow for street shooting.

Nice compact lens. Perfect for my purpose. Auto focus is quite fast on my m50. This lens with my camera makes a very compact package for digital scoping which is my main purpose. Lens looks new. Great price. Good senseable buy.

Even on a 5DS R this lens makes the photographer less noticed and stealthy. I keep it mounted on my camera as the dust cover and I am always on the ready! Performs well in a full frame format without the bulk of larger standard optics.

I can't believe how long it took me to purchase this lens. This review is for full-frame use. I've been rolling my eyes at it ever since it first came out. How can this lens be any good? Recently reading various technical reviews raised my eyebrows and quickly changed my opinion of this lens. I can confirm after various mixed use that this lens delivers the goods. It's optically amazing and I'm picky. Very sharp across the frame wide-open. Stopping down to f/3.2 helps clean up a bit of light fall off although wide-open isn't overly bad in that regard. The quality of bokeh is very good and longitudinal CA (LoCA is minimal. This lens has very little barrel distortion. I'm using mine for close focus work and general landscape photography. I'm very pleased with the images I'm seeing. The focal length feels just perfect. 35mm can feel too wide and 50mm often feels restrictive. It's a true pleasure to use. It makes my full-frame camera seem so light and small. This lens is such a smart buy if you're passionate about natural perspective photography. It should cost at least twice as much for what you get. Enjoy!

I love this lens. I throw it on my older 6d and I have a FF camera that is sharp, light and as portable as some point and shoots. Do not let its price and size fool you. The optic on this lens are unsurpassed by the "big boy" zooms costing thousands. Build quality is much better than the plasticky nifty fifty. Focus is not the fastest, but plenty fast for a 40 mm. Buy it. You will love it!

My only reason this got a 4 star is because I am so used to being able to zoom. If this had a zoom feature it would hands down be my favorite lens! We took a trip to Medora North Dakota and this was the perfect lens for it. I took picture of the landscapes and my children playing. Worth the $$

The EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is a terrific lens, especially for the price. It is small and light and quite versatile It's easy to walk around with and it takes great pictures. When I'm using another lens I always carry the "shorty 40" in my pocket as a light-weight alternative.

"This was the second lens I’ve ever purchased and it’s one of the best investments I’ve made in my photography career. It’s tiny, with superior build quality. For stills, I mainly use it for portraits as well as for close-up details since it’s a macro lens, as well. For motion/video, it’s ideal since it has continuous autofocusing during recording and a very cinematic feel. It’s very silent and perfect fit for personal/home video projects. Because of its size, it’s easy to bring anywhere."
A unique and indispensable addition to Canon's series of EF lenses, the new EF 40mm f/2.8 STM offers an ultra-slim and lightweight design. Incredibly compact in size, the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM delivers high image quality from the center to the periphery thanks to its advanced lens configuration including an aspherical element, a bright 2.8 aperture, and optimized coatings that minimize ghosting and flare while providing exceptional color balance.
The EF 40mm f/2.8 STM's unobtrusive design helps the photographer avoid overwhelming their subjects with a large lens and to remain discreet in sensitive shooting situations with no compromise in performance. It's diminutive design is complemented by features such as a newly developed stepping motor for smooth and quiet continuous AF while capturing video with the Canon EOS Rebel T4i DSLR, a circular aperture (7 blades) for beautiful soft-focus backgrounds, and a short minimum focusing distance of only 0.98 ft./0.30 m.
