The Ideal do it all cinema camera.

When it comes to sheer video capabilities, this camera does it all. It's super 35, but you can get the eos speedbooster and shoot close to full frame with a bump in low light capabilities. 4k 120 is top notch. 4 channel audio. and remote viewing and controls available via an app over wifi. The only drawback is the size. I like to fly under the radar out in public with a camera this expensive. But some people like to be seen... If you don't mind the extra weight and size this camera is perfect if you are invested in EF or RF lenses. NOTE: The newer c80 is full frame, but a downgrade without the DGO sensor.

Happy customer

Love this camera. I've rented before buying it and I was already very satisfied. I would have appreciated a build in EVF, though. Shipping was fast and smooth.

Inspires confidence!

Moving up from using my Canon R5 for A-cam interviews and having it overheat a few times on a job, this thing is exactly what I needed! Now no more sweating bullets wondering if my camera will power down before the interview is over. I love that you can record from two audio sources simultaneously.

Incompatibility issues!

Great image quality and slo-mo autofocus capabilities. I'm frustrated that FCPX still does not recognize the 240 Mbps Intra-frame footage from this camera which is what I use to shoot 60fps. This creates a big workflow challenge. Please Canon talk to Apple and get this fixed!!!

C70 after 1 year of use

I am using this camera for a while now, however it has some severe issues. 1. There is a heavy antialising and moire problem that make most of my recordings unusable!!! The effect is increased when Digital IS switched on. DIS makes every straight line jitter, no matter which lens or zoom range I am using. 2. The autofocus is really bad, probably worst than in my R7 camera, despite the Face Priority mode which would have been nice, but not working properly. 3. The battery is pretty mediocre, but costs a furtune! 4 The LCD panel is full of garbage, the hinge already came off from the body of the camera. Poor engineering. 5. It is prone to be get scratched due to the plastic of the body, especially the upper part. I can't beleive I paid for this camera almost the same amount as my little apartment did cost. Ugggghhhh.

jittering footage with C70

I am using this gear for more than a year now, but I really want to get rid of it. It has a ridiculous amount of antialiasing and jittering, which makes all my recording totally unusable. You would be better of to pick up a Canon EOS R7, which handles the job much better. Look at the footage I recorded with the C70 and see the jittering effect around the letters in the footage here. [Andorama removed the clip.]

Amazing image quality and amazing files to edit!

The c70 enabled me to step into a true professional video workflow. As a hybrid shooter (relying on the r5 w/external recorder for video, that still overheated on 1/2 day shoots it?s amazing to finally have a professional cinema body for video and not worry about overheating or bringing extra gear to record audio. Getting the c70 has enabled me to eliminate an external video recorder and the file sizes are much easier to edit and way smaller in size. Having an external audio recorder is no longer needed since the c70 has built in 4-channel recorder with amazing pre-amps. And the best for last, the dynamic range and image quality is the best I?ve ever edited with. Especially mind-blowing since the file size of xf-avc is a quarter the size of what the r5 recorded at. Will definitely buy another as my business grows.

The best cinema camera out of the box

The c70 is undoubtedly the best cinema camera that you can buy for the price. It comes with so many features packed in that would need to be added to most other cameras at a cost. Internal ND filters, a slew of audio inputs, and fully remappable keys, you can literally attach a lens and shoot right away. Coming from Nikon, Clog2 has been great to color grade with and the dual gain sensor makes low light footage have great shadow detail and highlights. I made a decision to cancel my Red Komodo order for this and I'm glad that I did.

Incredible camera, a bit worried about the screen but its perfect. Just wish auto focus worked better in low light but not a biggie. Perfect image and usability. Paired with the canon focal reducer its a beast.

Great general purpose camera

Great camera overall, natively it is a super 35 mm without a 1.5 crop. Using the focal adapter you get the full frame equivalent. I also have no focal canon adapter and for using EF lenses. The auto focus seems more responsive with the non-focal adapter. I didn't get to try RF lenses yet.

Best Video Camera I've ever owned

The C70 is my very first cinema camera. For decades I have only been using camcorders; only one being a 1-inch type (actually approx 16mm. So this unit was a serious update. It's also my very first interchangable lens video equipment. I only have the RF 24-70 f/2.8L for now. It can be quite compact without the top handle; I'm connecting a small stereo mic to the hot shoe (connects via 3.5mm cable). Weight isn't too bad at around 5.5 to 6 lbs. Pros... Super 35 sensor with very high dynamic range. Really like how you can record two different codecs simultaneously. This really helped to save money on cards. I'm currently using a 256 GB V90 card in the main slot and 128 GB V90 card in the secondary slot. I then set it up to record XF-AVC 10-bit 4:2:2 All-I to the first card and the Long-GOP version to the secondary card. The quick menu system is very convenient; really easy to change commonly-used settings. Very intuative menu system as well. Incredible amount of customization available. I rented the 0.71x adapter and was able to use my EF 50mm f/1.2L. That was incredible. Having light-gathering capability of f/0.9, I could shoot very dark scenes with just ISO 400 (shutter at 1/48; 180-degree mode with true 24 fps). Cons... The only feature I kinda miss from camcorders is having a rocker-style zoom. I know it exists for cine-servo type lenses which are way beyond my budget. Still, this hasn't prevented me from capturing content at all; I just think about capturing content differently now. Which is probably a really good thing.

Canon's cinema goodness

Great image quality and easy to use. Good upgrade for any DSLR/mirrorless shooters. Only concern is the subpar build quality and the autofocus is nothing in comparison to an R5. Still sufficient for professional work nonetheless

Great entry into the cinema series

For a cinema camera...this is a remarkable entry point! I had the C100 Mk II and very much enjoyed the image quality the camera offered, but ended up selling the body because the size was just too big for the projects I worked on at the time. The C70 has resolved that issue for me. This camera is very adaptable, portable and the image quality is amazing. Very happy with this camera.

Excellent choice for wedding films

I have now used my C70 for a couple of weddings and I am very pleased with the investment. I am able to match footage with my Canon 5D Mk IV with C-Log upgrade and the pair make a great duo. I also have the EF .71x adapter which makes me EF L lenses even more powerful when paired with this camera. When using the adapter on the C70 and mounting my 24-70 2.8L lens I am able to pretty closely match the framing of the 16-35 f2.8L on my Mk IV when shooting in 4k giving me a lot of options editing on a 1080 timeline. For the price point I feel this camera delivers excellent value.

Favorite Camera of 2021!

So far my favorite camera in 2021. I bought this guy a few weeks back and I love the image coming out of camera. Used it on many commercial projects along side my RED Dragon. Perfect travel doc camera as it fits anywhere my DSLR would. Love the built in ND filters, gives me so much more space not having to lug around heavy ND and big Mattebox. Balances great on my Ronin. Color grades well in Davinci! Overall very excited. Thanks again Adorama & Lewis for the wonderful customer support!

Great indie doc powerhouse

A great little camera. I've paired it with the Zacuto cage and Kameleon EVF and a side handle. Like many of us, I was going between this and the Komodo for single shooter work and determined this was just more versatile and customizable in the long run. Image is excellent. AF is excellent. Mini-XLRs are a slight pain but once I got the proper cables all was well.

Awesome Customer Experience, Phenomenal Camera!

Awesome experience from start to finish. Upgraded from the c100 and couldn't be happier! The only down side I could find was the material used on the top handle is a bit rough to the touch.

About Canon EOS C70

The Canon EOS C70 fills the gap between Canon’s Cinema EOS lineup and the mirrorless RF system, offering impressive cinema features in a compact and lightweight body with an RF-lens mount. The C70 is built around a 4K Super 35 Dual Gain Output sensor that delivers outstanding dynamic range and low-light performance, with a very fast and accurate Dual Pixel CMOS AF system that uses Canon’s EOS iTR AF X to deliver top-tier focusing performance. Canon Log 2 and Log 3 gamuts and DCI 4K60p shooting make this camera an excellent choice for a solo shooter or someone looking to add a camera to a larger production, and numerous connectivity options like dual mini-XLR inputs and dual UHS-II SD card slots improve usability across nearly any type of project.

Canon EOS C70

Dual Gain Output Sensor

At the heart of Canon’s EOS C70 is its revolutionary 4K Super 35 Dual Gain Output (DGO) CMOS sensor. Unlike a traditional image sensor, the DGO sensor reads every pixel using two separate amplification circuits before combining that information into a single image. While one circuit prioritizes highlight detail, the other maximizes shadow information, which results in an image with exceptional dynamic range. This makes the C70 incredibly capable when it comes to capturing high-contrast scenes while maintaining clean shadows and smooth highlights. This sensor pairs with Canon’s DIGIC DV7 image processor, which helps to deliver fast readouts at high framerates, excellent autofocus performance, and more.

4K Recording Formats

The EOS C70 offers numerous pro-level recording formats that can support nearly any production workflow. To start, DCI 4K60p recording allows for wider capture, while creators wanting to capture faster framerates can utilize UHD 4K120p with 10-bit 4:2:2 color sampling in addition to Full HD recording up to 180fps. The E70 also has a Super16 crop to further crop the sensor when greater focal length is needed. Canon’s XF-AVC codec delivers robust editing performance for professional productions, while HEVC and MP4 recording options are also available for creators who value storage space and fast delivery. The EOS C70 is Netflix approved for professional-level productions.

DGO Sensor

Pro Color Tools

Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3 are both supported by the EOS C70, allowing creators to capture 16 stops of dynamic range in both the shadows and highlights. Canon Cinema Gamut also provides a wider color space that is catered toward professional color grading, while Hybrid Log Gamma and PQ recording are available for use in HDR production such as modern broadcast and streaming platforms. This ensures the EOS C70 fits in perfectly with larger Cinema EOS productions for seamless color grading. Custom LUTs can be loaded directly into the camera for on-set monitoring while preserving Canon Log footage for color grading later on.

DIG!C DV7 Image Processor

Dual Pixel CMOS AF

Canon’s EOS iTR AF X delivers fast and highly accurate autofocus performance across the frame and supports eye, face, and head detection while maintaining smooth focus transitions. Subject tracking is excellent even in crowded scenes. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF covers roughly 80% of the image frame and uses each pixel on the CMOS sensor for both focus detection and image information. When used in Face Detection mode, the EOS iTR AF X uses an algorithm that helps to improve tracking reliability even when a subject turns their head. Finally, the EOS C70 features a Dual Pixel Focus Guide, providing both front and back-focus information so users know exactly where to set focus during manual pulls.

Direct Touch Control.

Built-In Motorized ND Filters

A motorized ND filter system provides a massive advantage over traditional mirrorless cameras as it allows for quick exposure adjustments while maintaining a consistent shutter and desired aperture. The EOS C70 provides 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10-stop ND settings that make it particularly effective for outdoor shooting and anywhere else that lighting conditions can change rapidly.

RF Mount Lenses

The EOS C70 is on a short list of Cinema EOS cameras that feature the RF mount, which gives creators the capability to use mirrorless RF lenses with powerful cinema features. Using any of Canon’s EF-EOS R adapters, including the 0.71x Speed Booster, the camera also supports Canon EF lenses while increasing light transmission and restoring a full-frame angle of view when using full-frame EF glass. The 0.71X EF to RF lens mount adapter converts full-frame lenses to Super35 format and also delivers an aperture speed boost around one stop. This makes the C70 an excellent choice for users who aren’t ready to commit to transitioning all of their lenses when switching to a true cinema camera.

Built-in Neutral Density Filter System

Compact Design

The magnesium alloy chassis of the EOS C70 keeps the camera lightweight yet durable for demanding projects. The overall body size is slightly larger than Canon’s mirrorless cameras, and a high-brightness articulating touchscreen, numerous customizable buttons, and an ergonomic grip allow filmmakers to work comfortably and effectively when shooting on a gimbal, handheld, or on a tripod. The camera comes in at just 2.58lbs (1.17kg) and measures 130.2mm x 160mm x 115.9 mm.

EOS C70

Electronic Image Stabilization

In-body Electronic Image Stabilization is included in the C70, and when used with an RF-mount lens, coordinated control optimizes hand-shake correction for improved vibration reduction compared to an EF-mount lens and an electronic image stabilizer. When shooting in 2K, the Super16 Digital Image Stabilizer improves its performance by using the peripheral area around the center of the 4K sensor to help stabilize the image.

When the filmmaker needs to focus on composition and framing, rather than lighting control, the EOS C70 offers a dual gain output to change the gain smoothly in the scene. This is ideal for creators shooting in locations with rapidly changing lighting conditions.

Pro-Level Audio Recording

The EOS C70 comes equipped with two mini-XLR inputs with phantom power that enable direct connection of professional microphones. Four channels of 24-bit audio recording allow operators to utilize multiple microphones simultaneously for projects that require multiple audio sources. Finally, a 3.5mm microphone input and headphone output deliver flexibility for smaller projects.

Active Cooling with Unlimited Recording

An active cooling system enables virtually unlimited recording times without overheating, which makes the EOS C70 an excellent choice for interviews, live events, conferences, and long-form production where continuous recording is necessary. The in-camera cooling system operates quietly, allowing seamless audio recording without compromising performance during extended shoots.

Versatile Connectivity

Many of the professional connection options you’d expect from a larger cinema camera are available on the EOS C70. This includes a full-size HDMI output, USB-C connectivity, dual UHS-II SD card slots, and a dedicated timecode terminal to sync multiple devices together for larger productions. A connection for an optional GPS unit or third-party Wi-Fi is also available. Ethernet networking is achieved via an optional adapter, while simultaneous and relay recording modes offer additional flexibility for professionals. A LANC terminal enables remote control using the optional sold-separately Canon RC-V100 unit. The 3.5” 2.76m dot rotatable LCD screen offers Direct Touch Control that enables quick controls utilizing the touchscreen, like start/stop recording, set ISO/Gain, color temperature, Touch AF and Touch Tracking, and other critical settings. For users who need to capture vertical footage, the ¼”-20 tripod thread built into the grip can position the EOS C70 for vertical use, and the user interface can also be switched to vertical mode.

Dual Card Slots

Two UHS-II SD card slots are available and can perform a variety of functions that best suit the creator's workflow. Simultaneous recording allows for instant backups in the field, relay recording can extend overall shooting times, and recording proxy files helps to streamline post-production workflows. For slow or fast motion recording, V90 SD cards are the recommended choice to maintain high framerates and resolutions.

Differences Between the EOS C80, C70, and C50

The C80 is Canon’s premium compact full-frame cinema camera, while the C70 is an excellent Super 35 workhorse and the C50 is Canon’s smallest and most affordable full-frame cinema camera. All three cameras share Canon’s top-tier color science, RF mount, and pro cinema workflows, but they differ in sensor technology, recording capabilities, autofocus, and connectivity. The C70 is the right choice if you want to shoot in Super 35 and have a pre-existing lens correction built around Super 35.
