Questions & Answers

Robert M : I am thinking about getting this lens. The only question I have is and I have read in forums that when you have the 2X extender on the 500mm the auto focus is a little bit slower to react or doesn't work at all? Can some one clarify this myth? Much appreciated.FRANK K : Sorry, but I?ve not used this lens with an extender yet. Regards, FrankROBERT C : For the auto focus to work either through the view finder or by the Live View Quick mode, the lens must have a least a f/5.6 aperture. The 500mm f/4 with a 2x extender is an f/8 lens, so it won't work. It will auto focus using the Live View Live mode, but this is somewhat slower. I don't know how this mode affects AI Servo. I also don't know if this is true for the 1 series bodies.PAUL S : I've been using the Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM for over three years now. It takes great photos, so I can only imagine what the redesign did for it. Speaking toward the auto focus with a 2x teleconverter, it does hunt. It will auto focus eventually in most situations, but it's usually not as quick as auto focus with just the lens.PRESTON A : Hi Robert...... Unfortunately, the 2X series II does not work in AF mode on this lens. I wasn't able to test a 2X series III extender as I don't own one. But, it's my understanding that it doesn't work either in AF mode. However, the 1.4X series II and III work beautifully with this lens in AF mode. Hope this helps in your decision making.ERIN G : About the 2X converter and the 500 mm lens. The 1 DX and the 500mm couldn't autofocus, just manually. But,Canon has fixed an upgrading on the camera that will allow it to autofocus now. When the upgrade is done, the autofocus will work with the 500mm etc.JOHN M : When you add a 2x to this f/4 lens, it becomes an f/8 lens - AUTO focus works to f5.6 on most canon bodys, but you need a 1D body for AUTO focus at f/8...... if use live mode, you can autofocus with f/8 on any body - here is the slow autofocus..... there is also the trick of taping - where you tape the contacts on the lens end, so the camera donen't know the f/value...slow as well.....just not enough light to do it fast.... I use a 1.4 (makes it f/5.6 - and do very well with AUTO focus...) I'll put the 2x on there if I have time to deal with live mode.THOMAS G : A little bit slower to react, yes. Doesn't work at all, no. I'm really impressed by the quality possible with the 2xlll on the 500 ll, way better than the old 2x, which I almost never used. But focus is slow, unless you can prefocus, so I tend not to use the 2x when I'm expecting to do flight shots. However with careful prefocus, some people have gotten good flight shots with the 2x -- check out Arash Hazeghi online.R MICHAEL L : Yes, I would predict that AF will be slower even with the new 2X extender but supposedly improved over the older version 500 and extender. You may also need to stop down to f10 or 11 to get the sharpest images with the 2X. AF will work with the 1D lens but not sure about the other Canon bodies.GEORGE B : the 500 with extender III works great you must manual focus as at1000 mm the sensor cannot get enough information to auto focus I have not tried fooling it by taping one pin witch I have done with my 100-400. I have a shot of a Bald Eagle taken with a 7D at over 1000 ft the bird fills 1/3 of the frame. I can see feather detail and is slighty soft an will sharpen in Lightroom and printing with Qimage will sharpen even more. I will be happy to share this Image This lens is superb with the 1.4 III and it will autofocus (google using the 2x with 100-400 Also google Qimage)JEROME H : For the vast majority of your shooting you can't beat the 500mm with a 2x entender. You can encounter a slowdown because you are giving up two stops with the extender. Also your best results come with this set up when shooting at a reasonable distance like 100 yard, the detail are amazing. For fast moving subjects like a bird the 2x will slow your auto focus. so pre tracking and following the subject is really important to have a sharp image. One last point, you will lose auto focus if you aren't using a pro body with the f stop above 5.6.FRANCOIS P : Depends what camera body you're using. Seems to work fine with any eos 1D but does not work with 7D for example. Not sure with other bodies. That said it shouldn'tt stop you to get that lens, just brilliant and works fine with 1.4x III. Make sure you get the latest extenders, serie III.JOE K : I am very happy with the new lens I have a 1.4 extender and it works fine with the lens but I do not have a 2 X extender so I cannot help with it Thanks joeDAVID D : I have not used a 2X extender with the 500mm lens.
Shopper : Do you have astock this item ?Brant W : I don't understand why the website doesn't say if they have something in stock...
Chris H : Do you have any refurbished ef 500mm lenses, If not, could email me when you have one in stock?. Regards, Chris Howell.GEORGE B : no I do not, I have had good luck with all new glassCLIVE V : no i do not have any.......but i would sell you my 500mm cvkANDREW R : Unfortunately, we do not currently have any refurbished examples of this lens available. Unlike new inventory, we can’t order refurbs in – we have to wait for the manufacturers to contact us when they have a batch to sell and in the cases of some equipment, refurbished units are extremely rare.

Fluorite Wonder!

This lens is spectacular! I used Canon cameras/lenses for 40+ years, and couldn't be more please. Using this mostly for wildlife, and airplane photos, and it works fantastic mounted on my 5Ds body. Also, it works great with the III's series teleconverters too! Highly recommended!

Fluorite Wonder!

Purchased with Adorama, through Amazon, and couldn't be more pleased with the service. I got my lens the next day with UPS delivery. Now to the review... this is one fantastic piece of equipment! I had the original EF 500mm lens for years, and thought since the series II lens was still available, I would get one while they're around. I can't believe I waited this long to get it! So good! Better than the old lens, and a bit lighter too. Also, this lens is much sharper with teleconverters. Especially the 1.4X III, which shows no image loss to my eyes. I also use the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II, and as my reference lens, and find this 500mm to be on par to it. A perfect pair of telephotos! Please see a few of my examples to see what to expect using this lens. Thank you!

Wonderful Lens

I have had this lens now for two years and wouldn't do without it. Hand holdng this lens for very long is very tiring. I use mine with a Gitzo tripod and a Wimberly Gimbal Tripod head. The combination of the three is astonishing. Using the series III extenders is good as long as you have enough light for the AF to work.

Superb lens!

I used 400 mm f5.6L and 60D combo to shoot birds and it is really a good combo in the mid budget range for bird photography. However, I wanted more reach to my subject not losing any optical and autofocus performance of the lens so opted for 500 mm f4 IS II. The lens is very pricey when you compared to 400 mm f5.6 but it worth every penny. It is a different class and if you have the money just go for it. It will not disappoint you. The only thing that is an issue for me with this lens is its weight. So be prepare to carry a sturdy tripod with you always when you plan on using this lens. I am not saying that it cannot hand hold able but I cannot do it for longer. But other than that this lens is awesome! I strongly recommend to all bird photographers to buy this lens and I am sure you will produce excellent images with this lens if you know what you are doing. I have attached few images that I took with this lens as a sample.

Beautiful images

This is my first fixed long range lens. I am currently still getting accumulated to the size and range of this lens. With my 100-400 canon lens I still had handheld ability, you lose that with the 500. On the positive side, a good tripod and monopod net you some beautiful photographs. The clearity and range are outstanding on this one. I would recommend this lens.

Best Value of the “Great White” Supertelephotos

The EF 500mm f/4L IS II is the sweet spot of Canon’s L series supertelephoto line up. It offers great reach, fast AF and the same quality build and features as its heavier, more expensive stablemates. At a little over 7 lbs, it’s quite a bit lighter than the 400 f2.8, 200-400 f4, 600 f4 or the 800 f5.6. That’s good for your back. It’s also cheaper - $2,500 less than the 600, $4,000 less than the 800 and $1,000 less than the 400. That’s good for your wallet. Pair the EF 500 mm with a 2X extender and you have a 1000mm f/8 lens that autofocuses on 1-series or 5-series bodies. Granted, the 2X extender will degrade image quality some but for me the results are fantastic. For even more fun, stack two 2X extenders with an EF-12 extension tube and you have a 2000mm lens!!

Fantastic glass

A number of years ago, I had a Canon F4.5 non-IS 500. I eventually unloaded it and had been using an aftermarket big zoom. Finally, I sprang for this new F4 IS. It's a fantastic piece of glass, so well balanced and surprisingly light. I use it all the time now for wildlife, especially birds, and quite often with the 1.4 extender all on a 7DII. I wish I had gotten it years ago.

great lens

I do wildlife photography as a hobby. I reviewed articles about the 500mm vs the 600mm and chose this lens. The quality of photos is incredible with this lens, whether alone or with the 1.4 TC. It is heavy but very usable handheld for shorter times. Quality of output is best I've ever had. I use both the Canon 7D Mark II & 1Dx Mark ii with this lens

Amazing!

I bought this lens to replace an older 400DO which I thought was Ok. After the first image I knew this lens was in another league. My only nitpick about the lens is based on the IS sound. The IS has an abrupt engagement/disengagement sound, but works great otherwise. The IQ and AF are both excellent and I can't imagine anyone feeling let down there.

Excllent new features in the GenII IS lens!

Improved IQ, AF speed, and T-Con compatibility are gravy for this new version of the 500mm f/4L IS. If your coming from the old version, however, the reduced weight is the best improvement IMHO. Combine with MkIII T-Cons and a modern AF system as found on 5D4 and 1Dx2, and you get the most amazing full featured full speed AF, as if the T-Con is not there!

An optical masterpiece

Incredibly sharp lens, quick, precise autofocus, and wonderfully balanced when on my camera. Saved for a year and luckily found a used one in perfect shape. Not a versatile lens, but what a gem when circumstances warrant its use. As with the earlier IS version, the silly sub-standard tightening system for the expensive lens hood could be improved. As is, when in the field it's still a clunky, slow, relatively fragile, aggravating mechanism (I had to order the replacement parts from Canon -- great service though that leaves marks on the lens barrel grooves. . Heck, for field use, I'd even prefer a cheap, ugly black plastic lens hood that twists on. But, otherwise, I am thrilled by the wonderful optics of this lens.

A Workhorse for the Field

Used this lens on a 1DX for an air show and was required to be 625 yards away from the runway. To give you an idea of how the frame was filled: when a 737 aircraft was landing or taking off, I could not see the entire aircraft in the frame when it was a-beam. It brings you that close. But will have to agree, this is not a hand hold lens if you are a single focus point shooter. Got tired within 45 minutes of panning across the field. Would definitely use a mono-pod and will be laying it on bean-bags at the next shoot in Africa.

Really Nice Lens

Bought this for birding and absolutely love it. I generally use this with the 1.4 extender and it is tack sharp with very fast focus. Definately a lens worth considering if you are doing bird or nature photography.

One of the Best Wildlife/ Birding lens in the Market!

What can be said that hasn’t already been said about this lens? The Canon 500mm F/4L IS USM lens is without a doubt one of the sharpest, fastest prime lenses of this size in market. With very fast auto focus, and tack sharp at all f-stops, this is the perfect wildlife and birding lens. This very large, but surprisingly lightish lens is only 2 lbs more than my 300mm mk 2.8L mk I lens. For such a large lens it’s not too hard to handhold. The Super Spectra Coating pretty much eliminates ghosting and chromatic aberration with this lens. So far I’ve had a hard time spotting any at all in my shots. When I first shot with this lens I was amazed at the amount of light it could gather, even in low light. So it wasn’t a surprise after using the Canon EF 1.4 and 2.0 tele-extender, that the pictures are still sharp, and the auto focus is still very fast, more so with the 1.4 TC which it’s hard to tell the difference from not using it. I don’t use the IS (Image stabilization) as much as some would, just because 90% of my photographs are done on a tripod and gimbal head, but what I do like about it is how it can detect when your lens is on a tripod. Not sure how it’s done, but it’s nice to know, if you forget to turn off the IS, your image won’t suffer for it. As with all the Canon “White L” lenses, the 500mm mk II comes with a very nice carrying case, which doesn’t work very well out in the field, but protects the lens on trips. It also comes with a leather like hood cover, that’s designed to fit over the front of the hood to protect the now lightweight hood. I wish Canon would come out with a lens cap for these big lenses. I purchased a lens cap from Aquatech Imaging Solutions that fits perfectly. So now I have protection for that large front element from dust and dings. If anyone is interested in the cap, write to me and I can send you the link. One thing that is driving me nuts, and it’s not really the fault of the lens, but because the lens is so relatively light weight, when I add my 7D mk II to the lens, and add both of them to my Wimberley gimbal, it tends to be a bit back heavy. I’m using a long quick release plate, but I still haven’t been able to solve this issue. For birding it’s a dream to use, the very fast autofocus, and tack sharp images, I just don’t have many cons for this lens. The price is really the only con that I have for it, and it’s a huge issue. Canon just has to find a way to lower the prices for their lenses, or they will lose a ton of customers that are now shooting with the cheaper, albeit lower quality lens like the Sigma and Tamron 150-500mm lenses. Now I know that those lenses can’t even come close to the sharpness and auto focus of the Canon L lenses, but at 1/10th the cost they may not have to. PROs: Fast auto focus, very sharp, lighter weight, advanced optics CONs: Very expensive

Saved a long time for this lens...it was worth it!

I don't think there is a lens out there to replace this, already won an Audubon award and truly know its because of this lens...it GETS YOU THERE!! The "definition and crispness" is beyond anything I have worked with.

Love it.....

Not a real full test report. Only had it for a short time. It replaces my 500mm f4 L IS which I purchased in November of 2001. That lens has been my most used lens ever. The new 500 is noticeably sharper. The IS is quiet unlike its predecessor and it focuses closer. The only downside I can see is the balance of the lens mounting foot. I think Canon has screwed up here. The majority of the weight is to the rear especially with a heavy camera like the 1D X. When mounted on a Wimberly style gimbal mount or a video head like I use it is near impossible to get the camera/lens to balance. The remedy is to use the supplied monopod foot. I have mounted mine in the reverse direction. With it, it is almost perfectly balanced. Also it feels more ridged than the long tripod foot. All in all I'd still give this lens a five star rating.

Superlight Super telephoto

The canon 500mm II is a masterpiece. Version I was as well, but somehow, some way canon managed to shave 1.5 lbs off of this lens. For travel and hiking this lens cannot be beat. The lens seems to AF slower with the series III tele converters vs the series ii. So keep that in mind. The 4 stops of IS also helps with hand holding this lens, but so does the aforementioned weight savings. I am happy I have purchased the 500mm ii and it will be a nice companion to my 800mm L.

Worthy successor to the lauded Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM, the new EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM super telephoto lens features completely redesigned Fluorite optics that deliver sharper images with less chromatic aberration and has a lighter weight thanks to magnesium and titanium construction elements.

Because image stabilization technology in super telephoto lenses may inadvertently over-compensate and interfere with composing and framing distant or moving subjects, the EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM includes an advanced third Image Stabilization mode (Mode 3) that activates IS only when the shutter button is fully pressed. This allows users to pan fast-moving subjects and then activate IS only when it is precisely required.

Additionally, all three IS modes give the equivalent effect of a shutter speed four stops faster, ideally positioning the Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM for professional action photography, from sports to nature. The addition of the Power Focus mode enables smooth focus change when shooting video. Buttons and switches are redesigned for intuitive, deliberate operation, and dust and water sealing keeps the EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM functioning flawlessly in even the most challenging environments.

Canon 500mm F/4L Features

  • Ultimate optical performance by adopting 2x fluorite for improved optical quality and reduced chromatic aberration.
  • Drastic weight reduction from 3,870g (8.53lb.) to 3,190g (7.03lb.).
  • Image Stabilizer up to an equivalent of approximately 4 full shutter speeds.
  • Improvement of durability and operability, all-use environment that meets the demands of the professional photographer.
