Having worked with 4x5 film camera which was stunning and has movements, wanted to max out quality and depth of field / sharp focus, without the time commitment of film developing, scanning, etc. 35mm is also portable and widely supported which is a plus. Don’t have the budget for a phase one. Shooting with 5DsR, tripod, wireless release, ISO 100. Largely nature still life, some landscape, or fine art type work. Lens is a pleasure, tough to find any deals used or gray market. Sharp. Haven’t compared with Sigma 50mm ART.

I bought the 50mm to complete a set of Canon TS-E lenses including 17mm F/4L, 24mm F/3.5L II, 50mm F/2.8L Macro, 90mm F/2.8L Macro, and 135mm F/4L Macro. These are lenses for meticulously composed shots. The 50mm is perhaps the most versatile lens, not only just because of the focal length, but also because of its full set of features. 1. At F/2.8, it is at least on par with the EF L zooms. 2. It's far sharper than any 50mm lens, or any wide-to-medium lenses. It also has less color fringing. 3. The tilting function allows simulating certain shallow DOF effect by larger F number 50mm lenses. 4.Shifting correction may not be as dramatic as the 17mm and 24mm, but can be usefil, especially when used with 5. Macro shots. The macro is 0.5x max. Unless small insects are the intended subjects, it's good enough for flowers, toy models, etc. 6. Using tilting in macro mode is interesting and useful. Therefore, it will be the 50mm I would choose, if only one is allowed, as it can do basically all other 50mm can, except for auto focusing. Talking about issues, there aren't many really. I noticed that when the lens is tilted, the focus shifts. This is different from the wide TS-E lenses. So, I have to focus after tilting. I would usually need the live view for focusing. However, surprisingly, the viewfinder auto focusing indicator also works after tilting. And it works for all focusing points (1D X tested). Another problem is auto exposure and auto white balance may be incorrect after tilting. This is after updating to the latest firmware, which was supposed to fix this issue. So, to use this lens, lock in exposure and white balance first, tilt/shift, and then focus. A sturdy tripod and a tripod head are therefore needed. These issues are consistent for all the new TS-E macro lenses by the way.

With a large f/2.8 maximum aperture, the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro is extremely bright, excellent for composing images and for quick shutter speeds – even at low ISO speeds. This means striking portraits, minimized movement even in windy conditions and high flexibility for low-light situations.
The TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro is designed to deliver the image quality necessary for detailed, high-resolution image capture. Two UD Glass lenses in a 12-element optical formula help to minimize chromatic aberration. The TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro’s optics deliver gorgeous, high-resolution images with sharp edge-to-edge detail.
To help minimize the ghosting and flare that reflected light can cause on image capture, the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro features Canon’s ASC and SWC coatings. Air Sphere Coating (ASC) technology is designed to help significantly minimize reflections, particularly with light that enters the lens vertically. It adds a protective film that includes air spheres over the lens’s conventional multi-layer coatings, enhancing its ability to capture virtually glare-free images. Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) helps reduce flaring and ghosting caused by light hitting the lens at large angles. Combined, the ASC and SWC coatings help the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro capture wonderfully clear images with high contrast and minimal glare.
For greater ease of use, the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro features enlarged knobs for fast, intuitive control of tilt and shift. Feel free to make adjustments as you please without having to take your eyes off the composition.
To deliver high operability, the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro features large tilt and shift lock knobs and a rotation lock release button. It also has a tilt-locking mechanism that keeps the lens in the zero position, helping to prevent unintended movement when in use.
For greater flexibility in shooting, the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro has an enhanced tilt range of ±8.5° to deliver a higher level of control. Whether focusing on a subject not parallel to the camera’s sensor, increasing or decreasing the lens’s depth of field or establishing a specific plane of focus, the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro’s enlarged tilt range can prove indispensable in defining the composition.
For expansive control, the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro features an incredibly large shift range of ±12mm, enabling seemingly impossible image capture with ease. This increased range helps the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro eliminate converging lines, reflections or nearby objects from the composition, recompose the image without moving the camera and even capture a wider angle of view through photo stitching.
With a minimum focusing distance of 10 in./0.27m, the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro is incredibly well-suited for close-up photography. Combined with its expanded range of movements, its minimum focusing distance helps make sharp and detailed close-up images with specifically defined depth of field a reality.
Thanks to a maximum magnification of 0.5x, the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro is well-suited for capturing images of small objects. Whether shooting photos of still life, product photography or anything in between, its combination of maximum magnification, close focusing distance and expanded movements enables a truly phenomenal level of control for even the most challenging subjects.
For advanced photography with precise control, look no further than the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro. It takes an L-series optical formula that includes two UD lens elements and adds extensive tilt-and shift movements for a combination of precision and quality that can be ideal for macro photography, advertising, architecture and more. Delivering reliable and versatile use both in the studio and in the field, it has large, easily operated knobs and locking mechanisms, sophisticated construction, plus a convenient minimum focusing distance of 10 in./0.27m. As part of Canonf s expanded line of TS-E lenses ranging from ultra-wide angle to mid-telephoto, the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro offers a level of performance that can be ideal for working professionals and enthusiasts alike.
