Questions & Answers

COLE W : is this considered the STM.... I have watched many reviews... and they all have STM in the title line?BILLY C : I'm sorry. I don't know enough to help. I just know it's a fun lens to use.
Shopper : IS there an IS ll also and how are they different ?BLAIR B : IS (image stablization) works in both the horizontal and vertical axis. IS II only works in the vertical axis. Why? So that you get verttical stabilazation in the vertical axis when you pan a fast moving subject like a race car, bird in flight, etc.ANDREW R : Yes, there is an IS II version of this lens ( http://www.adorama.com/CA55250AFS.html ), however there appears to be little difference between the two versions. Unfortunately Canon has not specified what revisions they have made to the newer version of the lens.
Shopper : Grey market ?VAL B : according to wikipedia: A grey market or gray market, also known as parallel market is the trade of a commodity through distribution channels which, while legal, are unofficial, unauthorized, or unintended by the original manufacturer.ANDREW R : Are you asking what grey market means? "Grey Market," also known as "direct import," are products legally imported directly into the U.S., and not through the manufacturer's authorized agent/distributor. There is no difference in the actual products. However Grey Market products purchased from Adorama, are warrantied by Adorama for the same period as the U.S. warrantied products carry, for a period of one year. Grey Market products do not qualify for manufacturer's rebate programs.

Great lens for very little money

I would not have known this was either used or grey market except for the packaging and the price.

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Image Sta

For right now I am using this lens for everything, from portraits to sports photography. I really enjoying using it and it is all around a great starting lens. Again the keyword is 'starting lens' so it is lacking the bokeh that I would like, sadly thought the f2.8's in a 70-200mm bring you into the L series and are exponentially more expensive.. as they should be for such a high quality of glass. Considering though the price of this lens was under $200 (USD) it is an amazing lens that has given me the reach to go shoot sports and get right up in the action with great quality. Even at 6400 ISO this lens holds up very well leaving me very pleased with the image quality for the money. Again in my eyes and in my growth in photography I really would like a f2.8 70-200mm to allow for that better bokeh. Sadly though, an L series lens just isn't in the budget for right now. Therefore this Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer Telephoto Zoom Lens is what I have and a great tool to learn on! I would very much so buy the lens again, even knowing what I know now about it and after using it. For the price it is the best!

Good value

I use this as a general purpose activity lens to compliment the 18-55 kit. Nice zoom, good quality, just a little off with the focus if there is movement so that some action shots aren't as crisp as I'd like. Nice value for the price.

Very good value

It was a gift, but not for me. It was my granddaughter's Christmas present. She loves it. It is exactly what she wanted and it didn't break the bank. She's a good budding photographer, but young and not ready for very expensive lenses because I am not sure she's committed to a Canon system yet. The lens focuses quickly and accurately, is stabilized, and lets her get close to distant objects. She's using it a lot and enjoying it. It takes good, sharp pictures and that's what it needs to do. She uses it almost exclusively on manual focus, as she does all her lenses, by the way.

Clarity for low price

I use it to zoom into subjects for gaining depth of field. The lens does a very good job at stabilizing.

It is what it is

I'm a rookie! So for me it is OK. It sure isn't the best. It is priced right, I like the image stabilization, and the telephoto aspect of the lens. Taking these features into consideration it is a very good value.

Excellent for the money!

Just got back from Hawaii. I took over 4000 pics. Probably a third of them with this lens. I just started scanning through them. So far I am very pleased with the results. A few out of focus shots on the beach but I'm sure that's more my fault than troble with the lens. I would recommend this lens to a beginner such as myself.

Good Backup Telephoto Lens

This is a solid backup telephoto lens. Actually a good bargain as a "just in case" lens.

This telephoto zoom lens is designed with Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology while retaining compactness and lightness, in response to demands of photographers.

This high zoom ratio lens is equivalent to a focal length of 88-400mm in the 35mm format (when used on Canon EOS cameras compatible with EF-S lenses) and the image stabilizer effect equivalent to a shutter speed about 4 stops faster than the same size lens without Image Stabilizer.

In other words, if the slowest shutter speed you could formerly hold a 250mm lens steadily was 1/250th of a second, with Canon's 4-stop stabilization correction, you could hand-hold at shutter speeds as slow as 1/15th of a second. It also uses a UD-glass lens element to correct chromatic aberration for excellent image quality throughout the zoom range.
