I use these filters to protect my front element. Does not make sense to me to buy a cheap one and put it in front of a lens that is worth a couple thousand dollars. So I go with a canon brand one.

Canon Glass Protect Filter
Do not really need a UV filter in my opinion but a quality glass to protect a 2500K lens is just sensible. Again, you can choose other manufacturers, but for a few extra bucks, I prefer the guarantee that comes with Canon products.

I had a UV filter on my Canon 100-400L IS II but noticed that some of my images were not sharp at long distances. I hated not having a protective filter on my lens so I purchased this one by Canon and am extremely happy. Great way to protect my glass!
