I bought this about a month ago and I couldn’t be happier. It is on the heavy side, but absolutely slays everything I wanted it to do: weddings and portraits. At 200mm, the background just melts away. If you’re thinking about buying this, you won’t regret it. Mine is impeccable and I couldn’t be happier with the purchase. It is a must have for weddings and portrait work, allowing for flexibility with focal length while melting backgrounds into bokeh goodness. I am OBSESSED with it. Thanks for another great lens, Canon!

I’ve used this lens for portrait and candid, indoor and outdoor settings, and it handles light and action well, as well as capturing details I prefer not to miss.

I had the 70-200 L 2.8 for years. It is hard to believe that they improved that much. It is a much better lens than the older version.

I love this lens. The auto focus is faster than my other lenses. The ONLY issue with it is that it is a bit cumbersome to hand hold [I prefer that over using a tripod]. But with the 2.8 aperture, I can increase the shutter speed enough to compensate in most circumstances. I use it for fun, to take pictures of anything that catches my eye. I'm in no way a professional, but it is definitely an awesome lens.

I bought this lens as an upgrade from the previous model. It had one feature that truly interested me (in relation to the older model... wide open performance. The difference in performance there was eye opening. The additional stabilization and improved sharpness were also welcome.

The lens is amazing! The difference from the first version is minor, but pronounced. The improved sharpness is throughout the entire range, but most notable wide open. With the first version I seldom felt that f2.8 was sharp, that's not the case with the new lens. The only reason I can't give it a 5 satr rating is becasue it is now 6 years old and not as good as some of the new offering from various vendors, but it is still the best 70-200 on a Canon body.

If you're interested in event portraiture from a distance where quality absolutely counts and you need the extra light gathering ability of a 2.8 lens, this is an excellent solution. I've used it for hockey, zoo and event portraiture with fantastic results and plan on using it for more lifestyle/convention photography in the future. It won't replace my wide angle zoom, but for situations where I just can't get close enough, this lens brings me right into the action and captures the moments admirably. The big draw with this lens is the vibrant and lifelike color rendering. The images just have this visual 'pop' to them that really stands out. Snappy, accurate auto-focus and the excellent image stabilization round out an overall rock solid package. If you need the best telephoto zoom with solid reliability and performance in this range, this is really the way to go. Pull out all stops and just buy this lens.

I purchased this lense as a Christmas gift to myself after wanting it for about three years. I am extremely happy that I did, because this lense has taken my photography to a level that I could have only dreamt about.

This is my review of the Canon EF 70-200mm F/2.8L II USM. The purpose of this legendary lens is to provide mid-range telephoto zoom focal lengths for multiple photographic purposes. this lens can be used for multiple forms of photography: weddings, portraits, wildlife, street, and my favorite sports. I will start off with some technical aspects of this lens very because it warrants that respect. The EF 70-200mm F/2.8L II USM’s focal length is the best next step up beyond your standard zoom lens, which may provide anywhere from 35-70mm. The F/2.8 aperture represents one of the widest lens openings in the marketplace currently, which can help your camera sensor by allowing more light into the lens for cleaner images. This lens weighs in about 3.2 pounds with 23 elements in 19 groups of glass (1 fluoride and 5 UD Elements inside the barrel of the lens This lens also comes built with a variety of very highly technological functions such as: a focus limiter ranging from 1.2 meters to infinity to 2.5 meters to infinity, an auto-focus and manual focus switch system, and image stabilization modes 1 and 2. This lens also comes equipped with two focusing rings, one towards the front of the lens as the focal length ring and the other towards the back of the lens which allows you to adjust different focal lengths from 70mm to 200mm. This lens also comes equipped with a tripod collar to place both the lens and camera on a steady tripod for shooting pictures. Although Canon recommends not to remove the tripod collar, (challenging screw and washer pieces inside may come out of place) you do have the option to remove it. Another special technical aspect of this lens is that you can attach both a 1.4x converter and a 2.0x converter to increase your focal length from 98mm to 280mm with the 1.4 X converter and 140mm to 400mm with a 2.0x converter on a full frame body. Just remember though that when you increase your focus lens with these converters, you will also decrease the aperture opening from F/2.8 to F/4.0 with a 1.4x converter and from F/2.8 to F/5.6 with a 2.0x converter. Converters will also degrade your image quality and you may lose access to all your auto focusing points depending on the camera you use. Now that the technical aspects are out of the way, I would like to focus on how the EF 70-200mm F/2.8L II USM actually performs when in use. My favorite and best uses for this lens is that it provides excellent focal length to capture shots of subjects that might be a little bit further away than from where you may be standing. While most lenses that people typically use may require that the photographer to get more up close to their subject due to limited focal length or distance, the EF 70-200mm F/2.8L II USM gives the photographer a lot of versatility and flexibility to capture subjects sharply and cleanly without having to get too closer to the subject. My second favorite function of this lens is that it has an ultra-fast auto-focus system when connected to your DSLR or sometimes mirrorless camera with an adapter. While holding down the shutter speed halfway and changing your subjects, both the lens and camera can instantly focus on your subjects in a split second with great ease. My third favorite function of this lens is that both the image stabilization and the autofocus mechanics are very quiet compared to non-professional and more affordable lenses. Nonprofessional lenses with the same functions tends to eliminate the element of surprise by being very noisy and may distract and annoy others within your vicinity. My fourth favorite function of this lens is that it is very lightweight compared to bigger telephoto and super telephoto lenses. At only 3.2 pounds, this lens is easy to hand hold enough to walk around with in your hand or attached to a strap with your camera without much of a burden at all. The superior quality, speed and versatility of the EF 70-200mm F/2.8L II USM makes this one of the most well respected and favorite medium telephoto zoom range lens on the market for the last 21 years with this latest version as its 5th revision.

I bought this lens almost 2 years ago and couldn't be happier! Always sharp, crisp and fantastic colors. The IS is super good for my not-so-steady, old hands. You've read about this lens, you know you want it, so just get it already!

it is an expensive lens, but it is worth the price. Using it on 6D & 7D cameras, the clarity and fine details are amazing. This lens is a beast, its heavy, and the quality is amazing. but ability to hold that f/2.8 throughout the focal length really is the seller....

Wow, just wow! I've been shooting the 70-200 mm lens now for about 2 weeks. The one thing that really stands out is how effortless it is to get a beautiful rich bokeh when shooting. What sets it apart from all my other red ring lenses is the field of depth is truly preserved even as the background is blurred out. The 70-200mm lens really is a very different lens and now I can see why it's a go to choice for portrait photography.

Improving upon one of the most celebrated lenses in the Canon EF line is no easy feat, but Canon has done just that. The all-new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM increases the speed, performance and optical quality of the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM while maintaining all of the characteristics that have made it a legend for professionals and advanced amateurs alike. The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM features one fluorite and five UD elements for increased optical quality and reduced chromatic aberration.
It has a minimum focusing distance of 1.2m/3.9 ft. at all zoom settings, which is useful for photographers in smaller spaces trying to get closer to a subject. It features a next-generation Optical Image Stabilizer, providing up to 4 stops of correction at all focal lengths.
And as with all L-series lenses, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM is dust- and moisture-resistant and designed for use in the challenging environments typical of rigorous professional use.
