DelRae B : I order a Canon T6i and 18-135 STM and 70-200 f4 I do have the 50mm now on this lens will it take pictures at a high school Basketball game?? or is it just for Portrait?RICHARD C : Your 70-200 mm will do a pretty good job at high school basketball games. The 85 mm will not be good enough to take close action shots. However, its big aperture (f1.8) beats the smaller aperture (f/4) of the 70-200 mm in dim light situation. It gives you a faster shutter speed by two stops. This is an important factor to consider in shooting fast - action sport such as basketball. Using slow shutters you'll end up with fuzzy pictures. Yes, you can compensate by using higher ISO. But high ISO will yield very noisy images.JENNIFER J : The 85mm is a fantastic lens but best suited for portrait work based on its beautiful bokeh and low f stop capabilities. For sports, your other two lenses would best suit you in a game.ROBERT S : I wouldn't use the 85mm for sports. Being that this is a prime lens, it's a fixed focal length and there is no zoom. I would think that your 70-200 would do better. If light is the issue, the 70-200 f/2.8 would have been a better choiceDAVID L : I assume your 50mm lens is either F1.8 or F1.4 so it will do much better under low light compared to the 2 zoom lenses. For action shots, setting the aperture wide open will allow higher shutter speed/lower ISO; then crop to get the shot you'd like. For portrait shots, stopping down 1 stop (F2.0 for F1.8 lens and F2.5 for F1.4 lens) will improve sharpness a bit; also stand back ~5 ft from the subject to reduce distortion.PAM M : The 85mm f/1.8 is an excellent all around lens. However, for basketball, I prefer the 70-200 f2.8. The zoom option is a must for me to catch the player in action full frame anywhere he is on my end of the court. With the 85mm, sometimes he will be too close for the shot. If you don't care about full framimg the player, the 85mm would be a nice choice. Hope this helps.

GET this lens! (Top Pro)

Okay first said my husband bought this for me because he thought he was getting a great deal on the $2900 version which I also now own. This lens is amazing!! The $2900 verion never gets into my kit most days. Perfect for portraits. It's sharp but "People sharp" has an amazing look to headshots.

Great quality lens

I really love this lens and the bokeh. After using a 50 for almost 10 years it?s an adjustment remembering to stand further away than I?m used to. This is a high quality lens with great results! Overall I?m glad I switched from the 50, it?s more versatile.

My first primes lens was the nifty fifty (50mm 1.8 . I absolutely loved it. My next lenses had to be the 85mm 1.8 lens. I read the reviews and decided to get it. Wow! This lens is so sharp and focuses very accurate and quickly. Now given... my 50mm 1.8 is very impressive, but this 85mm 1.8 takes the cake for me. If you have a Canon DSLR with an accurate autofocus system, I recommend this as your first prime lens. Even before you by a 50mm prime. It is delightful to use at large apertures to create lovely bokeh. It really excels as a portrait/people lens. The focus system is lighting fast, quiet and very accurate.
