I like the way it looks on my lens and how it locks into place. but it also does a great job keeping dust out too.

Buy this, don't buy the 3rd party one. Reason: it fits right on, and it attaches to the lens itself, not on the focus ring (the ring is weak, and it is a well-known problem for canon EF 50mm f/1.4 lens). I bought myself a cheap one ($US 12, Bower Reversible Lens Hood) from Best Buy because no other camera shop had the Canon ES-71-II in stock and I needed it urgently for my travel trip. During my trip, I accidentally dropped my camera faced down. My 50mm focus ring wasn't retracted all the way in (i.e., focusing at infinity), it was damaged right away, no protection. If my hood was the genuine one from Canon, I'm sure it'll help protect my lens from this drop. Learn my hard-earned lesson.

I've used the Canon 50mm 1.4 for over 9 years and never used a hood on it. I decided this time (ordering my second lens after wearing out the first one) to also get the hood. I've not used it enough yet to say it's saved any shots, but for the price why not try. It is very sturdy and screws on tightly and looks kind of nifty on the lens. I'll update when I have more to say about it after using it more.

I believe in you get what pay for. Canon accessories are more expensive but worth quality and longevity.

This hood fits adequately reversed in front of the Canon EF f/1.4 lens for which I purchased it. To my way of thinking it should have come as an accessory in the box from Canon. (That is the first new lens I have purchased that did not come with an appropriate hood.) Apparently Canon does not consider that purchasers of it less expensive products deserve to get what it would expect to supply with its more expensive lenses. I am not an expert on hood design and am unsure of the utility of this one. My longer lenses have longer hoods, and my wider lenses come with hoods of a more complex design. I suspect, given the design of the Canon EF 70-200 mm L lens hood, that this one did not receive a lot of careful design consideration, since the rim of the hood is completely symmetrical; whereas the former and all of my shorter lenses have indention's and differences in their lengths between the sides and the top and bottom. Still this offers some protection from glare and some protection for the lens from being scratched or getting finger smears.

I've tried going the cheap route and discovered that nothing fits as well as OEM. You get what you pay for. This fits perfect!

Fits the lens perfectly . It attaches to the outer barrel and does not put any stress on the focusing motor. Like some after market lens hood would.

The canon lens hoods are all great in my opinion. This one is no exception. It protects and shades the lens well. The felt on the inside really cuts down on reflections and the hood fits snug on the lens. I always buy Canon hoods so I can't speak for the alternatives but I figure why risk a poorly fitting hood for $10-20 savings.

The hood matches the Canon 50mm f/1.4 perfectly.

Some aftermarket parts works. Others do not. Lens hoods are the one item I buy factory made. When I wanted to purchase hoods for all my lenses, I bought one aftermarket hood to see how it would perform. I mean, a hood is a hood, right? Uh no. The aftermarket hood I purchased came in this weird two-piece design, the front edge of the hood appeared in some of the photographs, it was designed to be screwed on to the lens/filter threads instead of the hood threads which Canon designs into their lenses, and it couldn't be reversed for proper storage on the lens. Stick with Canon hoods. They are more expensive but worth the money. This is one thing you don't want to cheap-out on.

You need this lens hood. Here's why. The inner barrel of the 50mm f/1.4 extends out the front of the lens and moves fore and aft during focusing. It never fully retracts. If you bump the front of the lens, you will very likely damage the focus drive mechanism. This lens must be stored carefully (I place it in my bag on its side with a foam pad at the front). And it needs the hood to protect it from bumps when in use. The lens hood fastens to the outer barrel and thus shields the inner barrel from bumps. I call lens hoods the crumple zone. In this case it's that and more.

Not much to say about this. It's a well-made, over-price plastic ring that fits nicely on the lens and blocks out unwanted light. It provides extra protection for the front lens element. It can be reverse mounted for compact storage. The inside is lined with black felt to further dampen indirect light. Using this lens hood helps give photos more pop, more contrast. The effect is most noticeable on a sunny day but can also be seen indoors.

I bought this from Adorama as a used product. The hood was in excellent shape and works to protect the lens as expected.

The hood includes felt like material in the inner portions of the lens hood to prevent any glare off of the plastic unlike cheaper nom-canon hoods.

Bought OEM used. Compared to the third party, the plastic is more solid feeling and less flimsy. Because of the potential of AF failure due to the extending design of the lens, this or any other hood will help protect the soft platic gears that can become bent or loose following frontal impact.

This lens hood does not seem to screw on smoothly. I own several L-seies lens, and the hoods on those lens twist on and off easily. This hood seems tight and binds. You need to pay special attention when lining up the threads before screwing it on, or the hood will cross thread on. The hood works well, and seems to be made of durable plastic.

It's more expensive than the off-brands, but worth it. The fit is proper and firm. I leave it on my lens all of the time to protect the lens and to eliminate unwanted light from entering the lens. The inside has a felt finish that absorbes instead of reflecting light. It has a good solid feel and is definitely not flimsy. It would be much better if Canon included this with the lens (as does Sigma, for example), but they don't, so if you can justify the extra money that it costs, then you should go with the Canon.

What I can I say about a hood. It does its job in protection and preventing flare.

I've gone the knock-off route at roughly two-thirds the cost and found the product substandard, failed to fit properly. Fearing I would do damage to a pricy lens I bought the Canon Hood, a perfect fit, quality materials. Don't waste your money, buy the real thing and eliminate the grief.

Protects my lens, reduces glare, what else can you ask for? Canon quality build, strong and durable. Would buy again.

I bought this hood for lens of canon 50mm 1.4F. As you know, lens motor for auto-focusing is not durable. It is easy to break it because lens end protrudes when auto-focusing. So I am using hood for protecting motor of lens. Even though it has poor design, all of aspects is good. So, I am satisfied.

Nice hood, keeps stray light out of the lens and in my case, rain drops. Also if you use a polarizeing filter you can not get fingers into the hood to turn the filter. With out getting fingerprints all over the glass.

Canon makes top quality lens hoods, and this is a great one! Protection and shading all in one! Easy to attach too.

Typical non-L Canon accessory...this should be included with the Canon 50mm lens. Consequently, Canon gets a star removed for the extra cost, otherwise this is a fine product. It works as advertised and should be considered as required especially when around bright point sources of light--the 1.4 is wide open compared to most other non-pro lenses.
