in side by side comparison, this was the best camera for quality and low light... it has a wider shot, but not as much overall zoom... i'd rather sacrafice the zoom for the better quality and better low light shooting...

This unit replaced a high end prosumer Panasonic 3CCD DV tape-based SD camcorder. No more tapes for me.

I do the usual family videos but also do video for hire when the opportunity arises. This unit has all of the manual flexibility you could possibly want for the widest cross-section of types of usage, including professional camcorder features like selective fixed or tracked focus, zebra pattern exposure assist and focus assist edge displays. NICE.

I personally have no problems finding things in the menu system and the touch screen is a welcome novelty for me.

For best audio I recommend a good external directional mic. With an adpater for the mini mount, you can also mount third party wireless systems.

Like most AVCHD camcorders in this class, the video is top notch, especially for working inside with available light, where the unit appears to have been targeted by engineering.

For my purposes, this is a great unit and great bang for the buck, but not a perfect unit.

My perfect unit would not suffer from the following issues which this unit fails to avoid:

- Audio EQ controls are for internal mics only according to the manual. My perfect unit would share controls that would be effective for external mics as well, saving effort in NLE post production.

- Lens is 10x optical zoom. My perfect unit would be at least 20x optical zoom and retain the same quality. Obviously, this was a decision by Canon engineering and is a balance between capability, quality when used with the larger sensor, and price point.

- This unit has an internal rechargeable backup button battery which according to Canon is user-INaccessible. This is one of my personal pet peeves and to me is inexcusable. I think the regular battery should maintain the integrity of the camera contents while it is attached, and the backup battery should be used only when the main battery is not mounted or is being changed out, OR, the backup battery should be user accessible. The manual gives me the impression that I should be able to replace the backup battery, but in fact, you have to disassemble the camera to reach it. Not recommended if you have a warranty in force. It also states to replace it with a CR2025. That frankly doesn't make any sense to me. CR2025 batteries are NOT rechargeable. So what's the deal here? Seems contradictory.

Sorry to major on the minors, but this particular issue really irritates me, especially with high ticket items.

Except for these issues, I think the camera is GREAT. I'm NOT sending it back.

Bells and Whistles Galore

Good low-light camcorder

A good friend who is a professional, has a XF100, and hires me and the G10 when a second camera is needed.
Time code is not an issue as long as a loud clap is added when recording.  We match color temps, gain, iris, and shutter speed and the G10 inter-cuts well.
He uses Final Cut Pro.  I use Premiere Elements.
My Sony UWP-V1 Diversity wireless mic interfaces well and having manual control of the audio is great. My Sony MDR 7506 headphones complete the audio set-up.
Color bars and tone, along with excellent white balance settings make this camcorder almost professional.  Oh, it even has a wave form monitor display. Wow.
