What do you mean by the 72mm lens? The canon 70-200 comes in four different versions. The f/2.8's have a 77mm thread and the f/4's have a 67mm thread. This cap is sized for a 72mm thread. If you have a version of a 70-200 that has a 72mm thread then yes this will fit it because of the "72" in the name. However I recommend you make sure you are looking at the correct specification for your lens.WILLIAM C : This will not fit any of the current 70-200 offerings. Both f/2.8 models take the 77mm filter size. Both of the f/4 models take the 67mm filter size. I purchased this for the 50 mm f/1.2. I bought a set of 5 when they first came out to fit various lenses. In not impressed. They seem to come off easily in my camera bags and may be the reason for scratches on my 24-77mm f/2.4 Mark II. Well engineered, well made, much better than the alternative.

Well made. Worth the upgrade to the sad, wimpy little things which shipped with my Zeiss ZE lenses. Rarely slip off unintentionally... which is the point.

Well made, well executed, and more durable than most alternatives

It's a challenge to rave about a lens cap, but I have to say that an OEM pinch lens cap from Canon is a pretty well constructed piece of equipment. Far better than the old skool ones with the tabs only on the side, and frankly miles and miles (or kilometers and kilometers for the more globally oriented among us) beyond the sad and weak little things sent along with my Zeiss ZE primes... the caps on all of which have been replaced over time with the OEM Canon units. I can hear the echo in the distance "das ist eine katastrophe!" In any case, ~$13 is worth it to keep things all buttoned up while not on the camera.

These are a significant upgrade to the standard side-pinch lens caps Canon has used for years. The center-pinch design is actually a dual use one since the old way of securing the caps with locks on the perimiter of the cap are still there. The center pinch design, however, means that it is tons easier to remove and replace the cap with the hood on the lens.
