The form factor, great design and hand feel like a premium that it is

After owning the fx3, a7siii and a74 for a span of 5-6 years now. I decided to switch to canon because I was blown away from the footage of a video subcontractor I used for a production of mine. The c50 has been a blast to own for the last month. Looking to buy a c80 possibly or r5c maybe as a b cam.

Very Impressive for its size

Love this little camera and all of it's features. I never thought I'd buy a canon, but I am VERY impressed with this camera. I am moving from my RED Komodo and I needed a nice run and gun camera that I can quickly pickup and film with. I love the CFexpress support and there are a LOT of good YouTube videos explaining this camera.

Powerhouse cinema camera

I do love this camera. If you're coming from a R5c I don't personally know that the open gate is worth the upgrade but going from an R6 to this is a game changer. This thing is a work horse. I can shoot long form content with no issues whatsoever.

I'm in love

I feel the pain of the other user. I did have to wait a couple extra weeks for mine to deliver. I have it now and I'm in love

Camera launch date

Initially, the camera launch date was postponed from November 24 to December 9, and when December 9 arrived, the camera was simply unavailable. I simply do not understand how this is possible and what was the point of making an preorder if you are waiting for a camera that is constantly being postponed.

About Canon EOS C50

Canon’s EOS C50 is designed to be the crossover between a hybrid camera and a Cinema EOS camera with a professional video workflow. This compact, Netflix-approved camera delivers advanced recording formats with professional audio options, powerful autofocus, and even high-resolution still images. When you can’t compromise performance but demand the most compact-sized body, the EOS C50 is the go-to choice for hybrid creators on nearly any production.

7K Full-Frame CMOS Sensor

A newly developed 7K full-frame CMOS sensor sits at the heart of the EOS C50. This sensor is capable of producing incredibly low image noise and enables oversampled 4K recording that renders sharper footage with improved colors and reduced moiré. A full-frame sensor also offers a shallow depth of field and the cinematic perspective preferred by many pro-level filmmakers.

Full Frame 3:2 Open Gate Recording

The C50 is Canon’s first Cinema EOS camera to offer Full Frame 3:2 Open Gate recording, making footage more versatile in post-processing for multiple aspect ratios. In today’s world, this means more possibilities for sharing in aspect ratios optimized for different platforms. When using anamorphic lenses or creating cinematic crops, this also provides the creator with additional flexibility.

3:2 open gate and oversampled 4K

Pro Recording Modes

Internal Cinema RAW Light recording is available up to 7K60p in 17:9, or up to 7K30p in the full 3:2 Open Gate mode, offering users maximum flexibility during color grading while maintaining smaller file sizes for faster file transfer and more footage on a single card. The EOS C50 can also capture oversampled 4K video, 4K120p, and simultaneous 2K crop recording to expand your post-production workflow. The EOS C50 supports both Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3, allowing for maximum dynamic range while preserving highlight and shadow detail for professional color grading. Canon Log also integrates with other cameras in the Cinema EOS lineup, allowing you to use this camera on larger productions seamlessly.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II

Dual Base ISO

The EOS C50 comes equipped with Canon’s Dual Base ISO technology to maximize image quality in a variety of lighting conditions. With a sensor that is optimized at two native sensitivity settings, noise is minimized while maximizing dynamic range in challenging light conditions.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II

Canon has opted to leverage its latest Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system that can provide fast and highly accurate autofocus with superb subject recognition. This allows the camera to detect and track eyes, faces, heads, bodies, animals, and vehicles while maintaining reliable focus throughout complex movements, even when a subject turns away from the camera. The EOS C50 also includes a Dual Pixel Focus Guide which provides users with front and back focus indicators that assist with manual focus pulls.

7K RAW and 4K high frame rate recording

Hybrid Shooting

The EOS C50 is a true hybrid camera with a dedicated Photo mode that completely overhauls the interface based on Canon’s EOS R mirrorless cameras. By switching between cinema and photography modes, creators can capture professional-level video and high-resolution still images in one camera body. While shooting in photo mode, the EOS C50 captures 32MP images and can shoot at up to 40fps in burst mode. If you’re covering any project requiring both video and still images, the C50’s hybrid capabilities make it an excellent choice.

Canon C50 fits in the palm of your hand

Professional Audio Capture

An included detachable top handle adds two full-size 3-pin XLR inputs with 48V phantom power, in addition to a dedicated record button and zoom rocker. An intelligent hot shoe also allows for wireless audio communication, and SRT protocols are supported for direct IP streaming of audio and video.

Canon C50 detachable top handle

Anamorphic De-Squeeze

The C50 has internal support for anamorphic de-squeeze, allowing users to preview footage by toggling the de-squeeze options in the camera menu. There are five de-squeeze magnification options: OFF, 2x, 1.8x, 1.5x, and 1.3x.

Still photo capability

Frame.io Intergration

Built-in Frame.io Camera-to-Cloud support allows footage to be uploaded directly from the camera for immediate collaboration. For large teams, this is crucial so that editors and production teams can review and begin working with footage as it is being shot to significantly reduce turnaround time.

Remote control over IP

XC Protocol Remote Control

Using Canon’s XC Protocol allows for remote camera control over IP using the built-in WiFi connection or a USB-C Ethernet adapter. Canon’s RC-IP100 and RC-IP1000 controllers can be used in addition to third-party remote control systems to make the EOS C50 suitable for live events and multi-camera broadcasts.

RF Mount

The EOS C50 comes with an RF mount, allowing it to be used on Canon’s impressive RF mirrorless lenses. It also supports PL cinema lenses through an optional PL-RF Mount Adapter. This adapter allows cinema lenses to transmit lens metadata directly to the camera, giving workflow advantages to professional productions that use this high-end cinema glass.

Professional Connectivity

While we don’t typically see top-notch connectivity options on compact camera bodies, the C50 is an exception. Notable ports include a full-size HDMI output, USB-C, a DIN timecode terminal, microphone input/headphone output, remote terminal, and support for Ethernet connectivity with compatible USB-C adapters. Built-in WiFi further expands the capabilities for remote shooting and networking, making it versatile for nearly any project. Real-time IP streaming, UVC/UAC output, and remote control are available via WiFi or USB-C.

Thoughtful Ergonomics

In addition to the compact size, the C50 has a few ergonomic features that are well thought out. Vertical shooting support has been designed to better serve today’s content creators with a dedicated vertical shooting interface. The C50 can output vertical-format crops simultaneously while recording 4K/UHD footage, making it versatile for producing multiple aspect ratios of the same clip in camera. A detachable handle unit provides additional connectivity and ports but can be removed easily for fast-and-light shoots. Dual card slots are also available and support simultaneous recording even when shooting in RAW codecs. One card slot supports CFexpress Type-B and the other supports UHS-II SD cards. Finally, a 3.0” 1.62m dot LCD touchscreen is fully articulating, making it easier to use at all angles while shooting.

Differences Between the EOS C80, C70, and C50

The C80 is Canon’s premium compact full-frame cinema camera, while the C70 is an excellent Super 35 workhorse and the C50 is Canon’s smallest and most affordable full-frame cinema camera. All three cameras share Canon’s top-tier color science, RF mount, and pro cinema workflows, but they differ in sensor technology, recording capabilities, autofocus, and connectivity. The C50 is an excellent choice if you need a portable yet powerful sensor that can capture outstanding stills and video all in one camera.
