About Canon EOS C80

The Canon EOS C80 brings flagship Cinema EOS performance in one of Canon’s most compact pro cinema bodies. At the heart of the EOS C80 is the same 6K back-illuminated stacked sensor seen in the EOS C400, paired with the powerful DIGIC DV7 processor that can deliver exceptional image quality, advanced autofocus, internal Cinema RAW Light recording, and triple base ISO for creators who need some of the most powerful cinema features in a compact and lightweight body.

EOS C80

6K Back-Illuminated Stacked Full-Frame Sensor

The stacked 6K full-frame back-illuminated sensor enables faster readout speeds while reducing rolling shutter and improving autofocus performance, and the back-illuminated design can gather more light than traditional sensors, which helps produce cleaner images with improved low-light performance. This is the same sensor used in Canon’s much larger EOS C400, bringing premier Cinema EOS quality into a substantially smaller camera body. This sensor offers up to 16 stops of dynamic range and delivers rich tonal information and natural color that integrates well into any professional Cinema EOS workflow. The sensor is paired with a DIGIC DV7 processor that allows for faster readout times, quick autofocusing, and more.

CMOS Sensor

Flexibility in Resolutions and Frame Rates

The EOS C80 is highly versatile, offering numerous recording frame rates and resolutions to fit any project. While the camera is headlined by full-frame 6K video up to 30fps, it can also record 4.3K Super35 RAW up to 60fps, DCI and UHD 4K up to 120fps, and Full HD 2K up to 180 fps. With support for both Full Frame and Super35 recording modes, filmmakers gain additional flexibility when choosing a focal length or integrating with other Cinema EOS cameras. Finally, the EOS C80 meets Netflix capture requirements and is Netflix-approved.

Triple Base ISO

Triple Base ISO allows for extensive flexibility when shooting in variable lighting conditions to maintain outstanding dynamic range and minimal image noise. The camera optimizes the sensor at each base ISO rather than relying solely on digital gain to improve the image quality in all lighting situations.

Triple Base ISO

Professional Recording Formats

The EOS C80 can record Canon Cinema RAW Light LT, a format designed to maintain maximum image quality while keeping file sizes more manageable. Additionally, XF-AVC, XF-AVC S, and XF-HEVC S recording formats are available when fast turnaround with minimal color grading is needed. Canon Log 2 and Log 3 gamma modes are available to provide an expanded dynamic range and excellent tonal reproduction for highlights and shadows. You can import 3D LUTs to the EOS C80, offering accurate color reproduction on both the LCD screen and any external viewing monitor.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II

Canon has equipped the EOS C80 with a Dual-Pixel CMOS AF II system that covers approximately 100% of the image sensor. This system pairs with EOS iTR AF X autofocusing, which uses an algorithm developed with deep-learning technology to detect eyes, faces, heads, bodies, animals, and vehicles while maintaining focus throughout complex movements.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II

Built-In Motorized ND Filters

A specially designed motorized ND filter unit fits inside the EOS C80’s short flange distance. This built-in system allows users to activate a 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10-stop ND filter. ND button controls on the right side of the camera allow for quick usage of these filters to adjust for changing lighting conditions to maintain the depth of field in your image.

12G and interfaces including Wi-Fi and Ethernet

Professional Connectivity & Audio Recording

A 12G-SDI output and full-size HDMI port can be used simultaneously for both monitoring and recording, while the HDMI port also supports 6K RAW output to compatible external recorders. An Ethernet port enables IP-based workflows, USB-C can be used for charging, data transfer, and a web camera function via USB-C UVC, and dual mini-XLR audio inputs are also included on this compact camera body. A BNC timecode input/output allows for synchronization with other cinema bodies, and Canon’s Multi-Function Shoe delivers expanded accessory support. Dual SD UHS-II card slots support fast V90-class SD cards that allow for both fast read and write speeds. For wireless integration, dual-band WiFi can be used for real-time IP streaming, file transfer, and remote camera control via the Canon Multi-Camera Control app. And lastly, Adobe Frame.io Camera to Cloud delivers in-camera proxy transmission over Wi-Fi/Ethernet.

Improved body design

Compact Design

The EOS C80 features a lightweight, box-style form factor that is very similar to the EOS C70 and utilizes a short flange that helps to reduce the camera body’s depth. It natively utilizes RF lenses, but a PL-RF lens mount adapter enables the use of ARRI PL-mount cine-style lenses. A 3.5-inch articulating touch-panel LCD monitor comes equipped with 2.76 million dots and is significantly brighter than the screen on the older EOS C70 at around 1000 nits for improved outdoor and daylight visibility. This LCD screen also utilizes numerous on-screen monitoring tools, including built-in focusing peaking, false color, waveforms, vectorscopes, zebras, and more, that allow for more accurate monitoring of colors and tones in your video.

BP-AN Series Battery

The included BP-A30N battery, a BP-A60N battery, or a 24 VDC adapter can power the C80, while older BP-A batteries can also be used but will not deliver power to the Multi-Accessory hot shoe.

Differences Between the EOS C80, C70, and C50

The C80 is Canon’s premium compact full-frame cinema camera, while the C70 is an excellent Super 35 workhorse and the C50 is Canon’s smallest and most affordable full-frame cinema camera. All three cameras share Canon’s top-tier color science, RF mount, and pro cinema workflows, but they differ in sensor technology, recording capabilities, autofocus, and connectivity. Most notably, the C80 is the only camera of the bunch with Triple Base ISO, Timecode, and a 12G-SDI port.
